STIHL RM 655 RS
STIHL has expanded its range of high-performance mowers with the introduction of the RM 655 RS rear roller mower, ideal for professional landscapers.
The mower from STIHL includes a single speed, split, driven rear metal roller for a great quality striping effect, as well as making manoeuvring around borders easier. The rear roller features high quality bearings and stainless steel build for longevity.
The mono-comfort handlebar, with super soft grip, is adjustable to three different heights allowing users to find the most suitable setting and to access the grass catcher box more easily.
Designed with ease of use in mind, the powerful Briggs and Stratton engine is simple to start thanks to the auto-choke mechanism, meaning the recoil starter rope only needs to be pulled once.
Offering full flexibility, the desired cutting height can be precisely adjusted thanks to a single, sprung-loaded lever on the left-hand side of the housing, whilst the Blade Brake Clutch stops the blade when the mower is stationary, meaning users can empty the grass catcher box whilst leaving the engine running, or move the mower from area to area without the blade running, but utilising the single speed drive.
Meanwhile, the high-lift blades combined with the aerodynamic housing produce a strong air current that efficiently lifts the grass, cuts it efficiently and blows the grass cuttings into the grass catcher box
Thanks to the optimised design shape and air guide, the 70 litre box can be 100% filled, while the innovative two-part design ensures easy opening and emptying. Additionally, to reduce time between emptying, the catcher box features an integral level indicator to show when its full.
As well as being easy to use, STIHL has taken careful considerations when it comes to storage and maintenance, providing professionals with a durable and convenient solution. The body design for example allows for easy access and maintenance of working parts, such as drive cables, pulleys and the drive belt.
Designed with a foldable handlebar, the STIHL RM 655 RS lawn mower is easy for landscapers to transport and convenient to store. The new petrol mower utilises large wheels with high quality ball bearings for easy running, while the tread pattern provides better traction, as well as allowing for easy cleaning. Additionally, the bumper strips offer additional protection when mowing next to walls and edges, and can be easily exchanged or replaced if they become marked or damaged to maintain a professional appearance at all times.

Great, honest review (who the hell put a thumbs down?) you pretty much covered everything on the mower. I have the hayter 48 which is ok in the dry but can’t handle wet grass and just clogs up. I’m looking for a bit more durability as I’m on my second set of wheels in just over 2 years! Be interesting to see if the stihl mower stands the test of time, professionally how long do you think this mower would last if it was well looked after? Thanks once again for a great review. 👍

Hi Dave - my Honda broke down( gearbox after 15yrs!) and I got a Viking similar to this Stihl - 21inch cut, roller, plastic box etc. Loved it (the wet cut/box fill is superb)until I realized the fixed speed was a real pain. On a long incline I could have had my lunch whilst mowing it was so slow. The supplier tried to sort but I ended up handing it back and took my fixed Honda back. They hadn't sold it. Love the Honda but it is heavy. Might give the Hayter a try. I'd given them a miss because borrowed one a few years back and the box was pathetic - like a letter box opening! Great video again Dave thanks Will be looking to upgrade/replace though next year.

Fantastic review. What is the power like on this machine....does it search or struggle in long grass? The hayter 56 pro seems too. Completely agree with what you said....if the bag collects very well on wet lawns or long grass. That is the main thing and you can put up with the minor things.

The Lawn Guy don’t know about your lawns bud. But when I used the mower in the wet autumn we had. On the lawns I do. Wet. Clay. Dog runs around. The smooth roller was just making a mess on every turn and even on the straight. If I stopped to empty box or have a cuppa. This is the biggest flaw and main thing putting me off buying the mower. Can adapt to the backwards handles but can’t deal with it making a mess. Also heard the drive isn’t very durable. See how you get on with it next season. Talked to Stihl like you did. To PH. But the excuse of pushing the mower then engage drive kicks in. Something I don’t need to do with hayters. Be interesting to hear your thoughts.

I have just brought one, first try it's wet and the roller spins like hell, it could dounuts its so bad 😅. Odd because I have used Honda 536, smooth steel roller which never spins like this 😕. They used to do a plastic ribbed roller on older vikings.

This mower is brilliant on long grass, wet grass, long and wet grass. I really like the grass box, handled bar and the low vibrations. However I'm not impressed with the slow pace of work on larger lawns, it needs a gearbox. I also think the roller is too small in diameter as it struggles to grip on wet grass and bumpy lawns. Also quite confusing is matching height settings to other mowers, number 3 on the stilh seems to be about 5 on my other mowers!

That’s a neat mower. I can’t imagine a business that primarily uses push mowers for a lawn service. It’s my awkward American idea of yards I guess. Most people in my area are on an acre of land. Or 4046 square meters or so. In my climate with warm season grasses there are usually two important settings: 2-1/2”, and 3-1/2 or 4 (for St.Augustine. Some people prefer 4” but best practice is 3-1/2). Most companies use a stand on or walk behind 36” to get into gated back yards and then a main line 48 or 52” zero turn sit down machine for wide open areas.

I have 2 Cobra TN2160SXARH-PRO-HS Lawnmowers made by kaaz like the old HONDA Rear Roller Lawnmowers is a very good mower when it's working the oldest one has had gearbox fixed and the roller fixed and now the roller has gone wrong again. So it's going no eBay. I like STIHL and like the look of the STIHL, RM 655 RS so have just ordered one from Seddons. hope it picks grass up as well as the Cobra dose. Thanks for a great video - question for us the Honda 21" QX Pro roller (x4) hold up to multiple users for about 24 months before the gearing/drive fails (resulting in an expensive repair) We use them for 5-7 hours every day 5 days per week for the growing season and then every 2-3 weeks during winter. We like your review and were about to buy but then our dealer raised gear-drive failure. We buy a lot of Stihl from them for pretty much everything else, they suggested Honda or Kaaz (the Honda 'same same but different' brand) So my nuts and bolts question really is whether Stihl can deliver for those 24 months in your opinion? - We also like the vibration rating of 2.4 (mow all day) which (HAVS) I don't think you mentioned but would be good to point out ;-) : a Market leader it would seem. I really appreciate your time for the video and the reply now the greats is not growing so fast. Thanks

Hey, I think if you're putting those sort of hours on a pedestrian roller mower then you're already winning. (sadly) I've never got any where near those hours before roller/bearing failure. When I first started many years ago before Stihl's and Weibangs etc when it was pretty much a straight shootout between Honda and Hayter, a wise man once told me. "All mowers will break down, so pick the one that's cheaper to fix." So that's why when I first started I used Hayters. (not that I use Hayters much any more. I know it doesn't really answer your question, but I hope it helps Dave

I took the plunge and bought one last year, great mower as far as collection goes, it boxes well even when wet. BUT the drive has now failed twice due to a cheap drive cog. So I am now again without and a mower. Last repair lasted less than a month. Brilliant in all other respects but sadly not fit for purpose. When will these companies stop using cheap parts in areas that need to be strong.
@nickwf70

Mine is a year old, only used a couple of times a week probably 1.5hrs. Problems I've had. 1/ Blade brake clutch will not stay engaged because the mechanism on the handlebar and the lever are bending too flexible. Its already worn out to the point it cannot do it's job properly. A complete joke, I would expect this sort of engineering on a Chinese £300 mower in homebase 2/The drive belt is too slack and there appears to be nothing to re-tention it. Is this deliberate to protect the Micky mouse drive unit that is fitted, it looks much the same as the domestic version on my old Viking. Mb655. It doesn't look worn. If I was a professional mowing lawns all day how many weeks would it last? 2 or 3 ? Ridiculous. 3/ Metal Roller slips and spins on wet grass, on bumpy lawns it useless and I push it especially when set to cut low. 4/ handlebar where it folds in the middle, bolt has come loose several times. Again I think this could be better engineered to prevent flexing. I wonder if anything is improved on the 2022 model? Engine has been changed, no more Briggs and Stratton, well nothing wrong with that, good engine. Overall I'm disappointed payed £1340 I expect something well made. It's got great design features but over priced with this build quality, I could have brought a Honda HRD for the same money.
