Still the best Travel Camera - Panasonic Lumix S5 review...after the S5M2 release

I have been recommending this as the best travel camera for years without actually doing a full review of it. So here it is, better late than never! It's still a really good deal even with all the cameras released since, the Canon R8 and even the S5 Mk 2.

Great honest review, well done. My main camera system is Sony but having recently picked up an S5 kit at a crazy low price I have been amazed at how good the Lumix system is. I think Lumix as a whole is massively underrated camera system.

A honest review of a lumix S5 camera owner. I shoot with a lumix GX8 M4/3 and I simply love it and having recently picked up a Lumix S5 I am having ,again , a lot of fun with it and it is a damm good camera.. although i used it mostly for stills...

Omg Panasonic cameras are so underrated! My G80 plus 12-35 F2.8 was my all time favourite combo. So sad I sold it 😔.

"There's no point going to an exotic place to take pictures and then obliterating the background with bokeh" This is an EXCELLENT point!! I'm a video shooter, so I want that shallow depth of field most of the time, but I cannot argue with your logic here. Spot on!

You want bokee because you shoot video? Most movies are not shot faster than 2.8 on a super 35 sensor(apsc) this is f4 on a full frame camera. Movies are not shot at 1.8 or faster. This bokee thing comes from the photography side of the game.

Thanks for a frank and fair review of the S5. Have just bought a nearly new S5 complete with 20-60 mm and 50mm lenses . Initial impression is that when I hold it in my hands it just feels right and the image quality is up among the best.

Being from the Caribbean I recognise Caribbean accents instantly 😅 Thank you for the informative video, particularly sharing tips for auto focus settings. I've probably watched over 20 videos about the LUMIX S5 in the last 2 days and your video is the 3rd video to share tips for better auto focus out of 20+ videos. All the other videos I've seen just complain about the auto focus but don't offer any tips to improve it, I thought one of the biggest selling points of having a camera with pro features was the ability to dial in your own custom settings but seems like those other reviewers just wanted the auto focus to be good out of the box. Considering what this camera goes for now with the 20-60 lens included (under £1,200.00 New) I think it's a small compromise. I've been saying for years, "I'm going to buy a high quality camera" to share photos & videos of my work but other things kept coming up but I think the time is now and the LUMIX S5 looks like a very good deal for the level of quality it can provide. Great review for a great camera. I actually sold the kit lens and bought a sigma 28-70 f/2.8 just to have a decent zoom lens that worked a little bit better at night. That lens is really light as well. But I work 99% with manual vintage lenses anyway. And I don't really do much still photography, I'm a filmmaker. It was really interesting for me to watch this to see some of the nuances of the still photography side of this camera. Now it's your fault that I might be going out and taking more shots of still photography. :-)

@@VynZography it's an amazing lens to be honest. For me and my filmmaking, I never use it without a pro Mist filter because it is so incredibly sharp. Too sharp for me. Lol. I think for photography it's an excellent lens. And yes, it's about as light as the kit lens. It doesn't have 20mm, but 28 is plenty wide for me. I have an 11mm ttartisans fisheye lens for those times I want to get crazy wide and use all that distortion intentionally. :-) Sigma 28-70 highly recommended though. Awesome and reliable tool.

@@RockWILK I do enjoy the 20mm, it gives such an interesting perspective a lot of the time which is the main reason I swear by it for travel. If I do buy that 28-70 I'll keep the kit lens anyway. I think they will complement each other well.

Panasonic has had the 10-25mm 1.7 for MFT, which is a 20-50mm equivalent. I always saw this as the dream range, and it was also one of the main reasons I was drawn to the L-Mount. I just wish it was a constan f4, vs variable (In mainly do video)

Great video! I know you said it may not be great for videography but it's hard to beat the price. I think I may it up for videography as it fits in my price point and I will probably not use a lot of autofocus anyway when recording.

Hi. It's not terrible for videography either! I mean it does the hunting thing but is way better than it should be actually. Unless you are doing videography professionally I say go for it. It's well worth the price.

Never do Video in auto focus. Its for amateurs. Only manual focus for video.

Hi, just wanna ask.. is the camera fully weather sealed? and does is have sensor shutter door to close sensor when it's not being used?... thanks... nice explanation by the way 👍👍

Hi sorry for the delay I dont seem to get comment notifications at all!!! The ammount of weather sealing is hard to say for sure. Even the manufatures dont like to say because they afraid of having to back up their claims. I had been in the rain a few times with no adverse effect at all and that's all you should expect really. I'll never dip in tin water ever :-). No the shutter does not close when it's not being used, at least I have never found it with the shutter closed. The shutter is also open when changing lenses. I think this is a good thing though as the shutter is actually much more delicate than the sensor.

Image quality is better on the S1 and S5 if you use the Cine or Natural profiles. The S5II has very weird detail rendering if you don't use V-Log. I keep the S5II only because of the autofocus.
