Spot on. Consumers have been saying for years, sometimes quite literally, "I want AMD to release a competitive card because the 1080Ti is too expensive for me to buy right now. It needs to be cheaper! WE NEAD COMPITISHUN!!" Back in 2013/2014, AMD already did almost exactly what consumers are pining for now with the R9 290 and 290X. It was cheaper, as fast, with more memory and an architecture better suited for future APIs. And yet, everyone still bought GTX 770-780Ti's. They even bought Titans for $1000. And they wonder why AMD almost went belly up before Lisa Su took over. Navi 5700 is very good. I'm very happy with where RTG have positioned it. It could be marginally cheaper, but they wouldn't sell enough to make it worth it. The 5500 series is a shamble, but it was designed as an Apple exclusive. The 5600 series looks to be stellar for the money. I don't doubt that RDNA2 and the next Navi cards will be very good and be the best high-end card AMD have had since the 200 series. When it is released, I think the 5600 series will become the 6500 series, and the 5700 series will become the 6600 series. That means, by the end of this year you should be able to buy a refreshed 5700 XT for $250 and get very good 1440p performance. To me, that's very exciting.

How was r9 290 better for future APIs
@teampepeja5821
@teampepeja5821 4 жыл бұрын
AMD sold plenty of 290s / 290Xs, particularly during the first mining craze . It was also the last time AMD was competitive with Nvidia, with Maxwell and Pascal trouncing AMD with very high margins. Instead of blaming end customers, maybe take at look at Nvidia's marketing compared to AMD and their prevelance in OEM systems and maybe Nvidia's marketshare won't come as such a big surprise. AMD certainly wasn't on it's last legs because of dumb customers, it was the consequence of leadership and decisions made years ago and Su certainly isn't some magic saviour of AMD. Had Ryzen been a failure, AMD would be basically dead, no matter who was in charge. Today, RDNA is still way behind Nvidia, with no change to that in sight.
@angrygoldfish
@angrygoldfish 4 жыл бұрын
@@chairwood Mantle, Vulkan, DX12, the GCN architecture was better suited for it than Nvidia's Kepler/Maxwell/Pascal architectures were, at least in terms of relative rasterisation comparisons between DX11 and DX12. The 290X can still hold its own in many modern titles while the 780Ti has fallen behind, even in games that don't require more than 3GB of VRAM. The 200 series didn't fully support all DX12 features, and neither did Fiji, but it did have some form of ACE's and could therefore be utilised by low overhead APIs.
@angrygoldfish
@angrygoldfish 4 жыл бұрын
@@teampepeja5821 AMD sold 200 series cards, definitely. I wasn't saying they didn't. I was saying that far more people bought Geforce 700 series cards despite AMD being highly competitive. Consumer ignorance is inherently linked to advertising and product placement. Nvidia's prevalence in both mobile and OEM systems adds to consumer ignorance. People associate graphics with Nvidia and central processing with Intel. And they do that because of a marketing techniques, saturation of the marketplace, etc. It's all part of it. And I never said Lisa Su is beyond criticism or a magic saviour. Zen succeeded in part due to Intel's 10nm process failing. That was supposed to come out three years ago, right when Zen did. If Intel had invested in other areas, Zen would have come out to a much more competitive marketplace. People say that Intel consciously chose to limit progress, but it was mostly down to mismanagement of their manufacturing. And in fairness to Lisa Su, she has won multiple awards for her work. There is no doubt she's been integral to AMD's recent successes. There's no point denying that. And that's all I was saying.

5600 XT might infact be the best pick for 1080p gaming out there , but AMDs current lineup misses out owing to a couple major let-downs : lack of Ray Tracing support & unstable drivers. Plus nVidia's deals with major game development studios offers them a better GeForce specific optimization edge over RX line-up ; only a *very* few titles like the Division 2 offer AMD cards a performance edge over nVidia.

I've upgraded my PC at the start of the year to an AMD system, with the 5700 GPU, x470 motherboard and the Ryzen 7 3700x CPU and I couldn't be happier. Buying an equivalent NVIDIA and Intel products would have cost me around $2k AUD, whereas I got the AMD equipment for around $1.3 AUD (+ shipping) RTX is not something I care about and I can run the RE2 Remake maxed at 1440p with no issues, so the card should be fantastic for years to come. The price increase for NVIDIA and Intel is insane in comparison to AMD, it's a no brainer if you're a general consumer in the Aus market. Also cheers for the guide you made back in September, I used it as a template for my upgrades.

Ever since I got an Nvidia card, it's been hard to go back to AMD for this sole reason because I do make use of it in a lot of my games.

7:31 Navi is considerably more efficient than most reviewers gave it credit for so long that the user is willing to take the time to undervolt the card. Currently running my own 5700xt nitro+ at 1961mhz target clock (~1900mhz game clock) at 1.068v (I got some of the leakier Navi 10 silicon, but this is still pretty good) along with GDDR6 at 1900mhz. The more people report the issues, the more attention it gets. The problem is most people buy NVIDIA GPUs, whereas as of 2017 right now most likely folks from Linux side buy AMD and use em with the open source driver library, Mesa, which have their own separate issues to deal with that gets constantly reported and fixed, even AMD themselves considers it as being officially supported despite being developed by the community, heck they even recommend using that one instead of their own.

Even being a gaming focused channel, the technology based videos you make often shames the dedicated tech youtubers. I honestly feel like I have learned so much more from your videos than watching other tech channels where all they show is which card can pump out how many FPS. The 2 videos regarding GeForceRTX and Quake 2 Ray Tracing that you made changed my thoughts about nvidia's 2000 series graphics cards completely. Most people would probably still hates RTX and it’s bulls**t launch price and the fact that even the 2080ti struggles to reach even 60fps in 4K with Ray Tracing. They don’t really understand how much more computational power a fully ray traced render actually takes. Looking at big budget animations who renders their movies probably in a million dollar render farm takes hours to render even a single frame. So it should be obvious that there is no way that a consumer grade graphics card will be pumping out hundreds of frames every second even with limited rays being cast. And your video highlights on this so beautifully that I am yet to find a proper tech channel who has done that instead of posting thousands of videos that RTX sucks. It’s an honour that we get to watch videos made by people like you and hope you always keep posting these entertaining and yet educational videos. 😊

I think navi was originally going to be based on GCN. At the beginning phase of getting the original Navi design on GCN they said "Eff this" then got started a newer methodology more geared for graphics, taking the best of GCN with it. EUV will drastically increase production speed (shaves off a month of wafer production) so one thing folks haven't talked much about is more supply to the shelves will = lower prices. Will still be more than what we were hoping for, but less than what 5700 XT showed off.

We already have an idea of Navi 21 and Navi 23's specifications, 80 compute units on Navi 21 and 52 on Navi 23. Navi 21 is what people typically refer to as "Big Navi". They're both RDNA 2.0 chips and thus won't be part of the current generation. In the case of Navi 21, only enterprise/enthusiast-grade cards will have the full chip activated, the lesser models may feature 64/68/76 compute units. All Navi 21-based cards will likely beat the 2080 Ti by some margin, and Navi 23-based cards will be more competitive with 2080/2080S/2080 Ti. I personally think we'll see Ampere sooner than RDNA 2.0, and Nvidia's gains from 12nm to 7nm can't be understated, performance per watt and per core will increase by a substantial margin, as will clock speeds. Ampere will likely surpass what Navi can offer, I fear. RDNA 1.0's performance per watt is only around on par with Pascal, which was a 16nm architecture. Even Turing at 12nm is still in a league of its own as far as performance per watt goes, and the jump to 7nm Ampere should allow for massive gains.

the rx 5700 xt performance really depends on the game. its kinda between 2060 super and 2080. for example it actually has more fps in battlefield 5 than a 2080.

Pascal didn't couldn't convince me to get rid of the GTX 960. Polaris never got fast enough. Vega was too warm. Turing was snake oil and arrogance. Navi 5700's price wasn't as low as we wished for but after the other recent architectures it got my money.

One of the most important things to consider is that CUs don't full scale all that well in games, it's the reason that running Vega 56 and 64 on the same GPU bios and overclocking both yields similar gaming results. However, that was on 14nm GCN, so it's hard to say how 7nm rDNA CUs could scale up in comparison. Perhaps 60 CUs would be the perfect amount, it's hard to say until we see something higher end

I'm planning on getting a 2070 super. I would get a 5700 xt, however there are still stability issues so I'll just stick with Nvidia. If they fixed their driver issues I'm sure they'd have a much greater market share. People want a product that's well rounded.

PS5 uses Navi 10, which is RDNA 1.0. Same die as the RX 5600 XT, RX 5700, and RX 5700 XT. Specwise it's an overclocked RX 5700 with 16GB of VRAM instead of 8GB. Xbox Series X also uses a Navi GPU, supposedly with 56 compute units, so it's likely to be RDNA 2.0/Navi 20 because no current Navi GPU has more than 40 CUs.

You exagerated a lot, but really the reason is simpler amd's marketing for gpus has been incosistent over the years and also they don't have a halo product like nvidia had with their 1080ti, and now the 2080ti. Add to that the delays and the mining boom and the picture becomes clearer.

Times have changed. Marketing is marketing but word of mouth is REALLY big right now and it's a small Internet we preside in. Instead of following up on their strategy with Ryzen, decimating the oponent at the respective price range (a win-win both for the corp. and us) , they decide to play along and just shoot for better margins. It's honestly mind-boggling unless they want to cash in before they sell off Radeon...
