When I was a kid, I peeled the label off of a bottle of Sprite I was drinking, because it has a contest that you could win a free cd if you had the winning label. I actually ended up winning and this album was one of the possible prizes you can request. I chose the album because I really liked this song. After all these years, still do.

This summer, my parents and I took a trip to Arizona. My dad played this in our rental car while we were driving through the highway in Sedona surrounded by the reddish mountains. Sting has written a lot of great songs during his solo career but for me, as a 40+ year long fan of both Sting and The Police, 'If I Ever Lose My Faith In You.' is his signature song. I'm no expert on music but it surely has to be one of the best Pop songs ever written - with an absolutely killer bridge that ignites my senses every time I hear it. It also has an epic sound that can fool you into thinking that it was recorded with a full orchestra!

LYRICS (YEAR 1993): You could say I lost my faith in science and progress You could say I lost my belief in the holy Church You could say I lost my sense of direction You could say all of this and worse, but If I ever lose my faith in you There'd be nothing left for me to do Some would say I was a lost man in a lost world You could say I lost my faith in the people on TV You could say I'd lost my belief in our politicians They all seemed like game show hosts to me If I ever lose my faith in you There'd be nothing left for me to do I could be lost inside their lies without a trace But every time I close my eyes I see your face I never saw no miracle of science That didn't go from a blessing to a curse I never saw no military solution That didn't always end up as something worse, but Let me say this first If I ever lose my faith in you There'd be nothing left for me to do

I sometimes play this song 🎧 to motivate myself because the only person I could count on was just me. Even family can let you down. But not music. This song and a few others were my anthems to keep going through school, through infantry school, Iraq/Afghanistan, divorce, thoughts of ending it all, and even through raising my son alone. It’s a very endearing song for me. It holds its value and meaning decades later.

"The song is in two distinct parts. The first part is about the things I've lost faith in. It's quite easy to be precise about the things I've lost faith in - politics, media, science, technology, the things that everybody has, and yet I along with most other people have a great deal of hope, and a feeling that things will and can get better. So what do we place our faith in I can't define that as easily as I can define what I don't believe in anymore. So I haven't defined it, I've just said if I ever lose my faith in you, and "You" could be my producer, it could be faith in God, it could be faith in myself, or it could be faith in romantic love. It could be all of those things, I don't define it. I think it's important not to define it, because once you can define something it evaporates. I think it's important in this day and age when we are dictated to by music television what a particular song is about, that the old ambiguity that songs had can be retained." Sting was a schoolteacher for three years. During this time, he played in bands nights and weekends. His real name is Gordon Sumner. Concurring anecdotes have it that he got his stage name from a yellow-and-black-striped sweater he wore while playing jazz gigs during his early days in Cramlington, England, which made him look like a bumble bee. One bandleader started calling him "Sting" and it stuck. Sting has six children: two with his first wife, Frances Tomelty, four with his next wife, Trudie Styler.

Hard to believe this masterpiece never went to #1 on either the Pop (Top 40) or Adult Contemporary charts. March-April 1993. Best it ever did was #5 on both charts. If it were released today (2021), I don't think it would get any radio airplay at all. That's how much music has changed in 28 years.

I think these poetic lyrics describe how trust is the most is the most important thing in a relationship and if that's gone, the relationship is over. I especially love the line "every time I close my eyes I see your face" as it describes how you feel someone you love in "inside" your soul. Musically it's too. It's a magical song.

You've totally missed the meaning of the song due to your religious hysteria (sorry, vehement Atheist). The line, "you could say I lost my belief in the holy church." He professes that he has lost his faith in everything, including god. So, if he loses his faith in his love, he has nothing left to lose, because that's the ONLY thing he still believes in. It's a love song and religious faith is used to conjure "blind faith" in this instance, not for god, but for his love.

A couple of months ago, I use to like only The Police's songs, and I hadn't given to myself the chance of listening to Sting's ones as a solo artist. However, in a sunny Sunday afternoon, l listen to this song on the radio while driving, and it caught me since the first seconds. The mix of the arrangements and the lyrics was so beautiful that even made me cry. Then, I began listening to Sting's solo songs, and I recently had the chance to see him playing on live in my own country, Mexico 😆. Sting hadn't come to Mexico in several years, so I was present in a unique venue. I'm amazed to get caught by Sting's solo songs just before he came back to Mexico. I think it's not simple coincidence.

Only God matters--that already sounds like a cult message. "He is the only one who truly loves you." Yes, definitely a cult message. You need to work on it, this sounds really creepy and it's so misplaced given the nature of THIS song. Tone deaf and lame. Brutal.

@@cmlady0437 LOL If only you knew what the song was really about instead of just hearing the word Faith and thinking it's religiously oriented. No, the song even talks about losing faith in religion because of all the hypocrisy and nonsense. You're ascribing meaning to a song that is opposite to its intention. The real connections are with real people, not fairy tales. Touch grass, get back to the earth, live in our reality, not in spite of it.

@@JM-db8ez I get what you mean... Even so, it's not being delusional; but rather focused. For Example: Artist Name - Musiq Soulchild Song Name - Love Although the Lyrics speak of the music artist experience on Love through the ups & Downs of life.... Some may relate to the song regarding someone special in their life that showed them Love and yet the song always reminds me of God's Love. Call me delusional or a fanatic, but God is Love... and I get to see His Love in those around me and some people that cross my path in Life. It's not cultish when you choose to walk in Love... and believe God in everything I do and say according to His word & Will for my life. 🙏🏾
