Nice topic, Steve. Understanding the peculiarities of where our music is going to be used makes a huge difference in how we write and produce them.

Perfectly explained the difference between sync and stock. It can be confusing for new ones so thanks for that. I am mostly about buliding my "brand". So thats mainly Spotify / KZfaq. Thats what I can handle while having a day-job. Its also what seems to be working somewhat. Most music go up on non-exclusive stock sites but I dont make it for those sites specifically. Who knows, when my profile gets some more traction recognition maybe I will apply for Artlist again. Good video!

Thanks for the comment Bjornar, I'm also working on my artist Spotify brand! It's a slow work in progress but once it's developed a bit more I'll probably talk more about it on the channel. I think one thing that happens to us 'licensing' guys is that we sort of neglect our artistic endeavours because we spend too much time chasing after placements! 😂

Thanks for sharing! Sometimes I'm hard on myself, but I basically work full time and do this on the side and I'm usually in the 4-6 tracks a month level too, unless I've really got a brief that feels natural and I'm flying on. Managed about 100 tracks for the library I work with in over a year and a half.

Working full time and getting 4-6 tracks done in a month is impressive! Good on you! In general I try to never rush the process too much, a track is done when it's done. I'm also very detail oriented so I might be slower than some but it's more important that I feel good about the work I'm putting out there. I could probably push myself to work faster but 4-6 is usually what ends up happening within a month at a regular pace.

@@Steven_Beddall your tracks are awesome, not all my tracks are that involved if I'm doing tension style stuff. Obviously a big difference if it's like 12 tracks in a tension track vs 100 in a trailer track etc. My library also only looks for tracks that are in the 1:30 to 2:00 range largely too

This was very helpful... love your content! I would love to hear about the differences in arrangement for stock vs sync libraries! Would i be correct in assuming that stock music should be a little more plain and linear, while sync libraries should be big and dynamic? Lastly, where would music that goes towards commercials and sportscasting go under? Thanks for your help!!

My question is: is it better to cast your net wide and make a wide variety of genres or to zero in on the niche your best at and just hammer that genre in hopes people return to you for that specific style? My strengths are in orchestral/film stuff but can also do beats and things

@@birdseye2239 I think the real question is what’s more fun for you? You have to enjoy the process. I know at least for me, I would go totally crazy producing in only one genre. I think it’s worth tackling a few different styles if you’re up for it. Makes the process a lot more enjoyable and you become more valuable to the publishers as well.

There was a young lady in your video working on something with a small mixing console in front of her. What is the name of that board???

great video! why do royalty free libraries pay less royalties than sync? i didn't see that video linked? thanks!

It's a bit complicated, but basically it's a matter of cue sheets being filed correctly. Sync libraries have closer relationships with production companies and their clients and ensure that cue sheets are being filled out for usage. RF libraries are dealing with a different clientele (ie content creators) and typically a much larger volume of tracks, and aren't equipped to deal accordingly with use cases where cue sheets should be filled out, but aren't. This is why a lot of my RF tracks do end up on broadcast but I don't see any PRO royalties from them.
