Marsha herself said she didn't throw the first brick. She said she wasn't even there until after they started protesting. Sylvia Rivera said she was there, but didn't remember who threw the first brick.

With the Queer rights movement, I think it’s important to emphasis that campaigning has often come in waves. There were the waves before stonewall, and waves after but a really important wave was in 1978 with Antyta Bryant. She is sometimes ironically considered a gay icon but she opposed the gay rights movement to such a hyperbolic level that she actually caused a revival in the gay rights movement which had been faltering and had suffered several defeats. She campaigned heavily for the Briggs Initiative which would have fired all gay teachers in schools. However, she created a huge backlash and campaigning to oppose the Briggs initiative was so huge that eventually even the Democratic party and former Republican governor, Ronald Reagan, came out against it and it lost by nearly 60-40. Ironically without her, the gay rights movement might have faltered for many more years.
@tomasroma2333

2manynegativewaves No, thats not what this teaches us. The gays didn’t just sit back and let her sprout her bullshit. Before the Briggs Initiative, she had a lot of success in Florida, Minnesota and Oregon. However, she failed in California because the Gay community there organised against her. She provided the inspiration for the gay community to campaign against her. Without their campaigning the Briggs Initiative probably would have passed. So no trans people should not just “shut up.” Instead they, and trans allies, should expose bigots for the ridiculous lies they spread.

For a millennial like me, this kind of history lesson is particularly important, because we can't take the rights we have today for granted, nor should we forget the struggle of the generations that came before, that have allowed a trans woman like me to live openly, and even get a legal name change to suit my gender. But more than that, it is a reminder to everyone, not just LGBTQ+ people, that change and reform does not come easy, nor will it last unless we keep speaking up when our rights are violated.

Bit disappointed with this one to be honest. Marsha, based on the accounts I've read of his own words, was not trans but a drag queen.Also, you only mention him and not name-check a couple of other key people who have been credited with key involvement, such as Sylvia Rivera or Stormé DeLarverie (who incidentally seems to be one of the main people associated with starting the riot). Certainly there are lots of differing accounts but it wouldn't have been hard for you to have name-checked a couple of them rather than just Marsha, and then incorrectly identifying him as trans.

I learned so much from this. I didn't know the Stonewall Inn story before. Also I was alive when gay marriage was legalised, but I hadn't consciously grasped just how relatively recent the other legal rights changes were. It's staggering because today to think an LGBTQ+ person should be treated anything other than equally to everyone else is overtly bigoted. It also explains why there are still the few usually older people who hold homophobic beliefs, and sometimes their children and grandchildren too. I don't feel like hate is innate, I feel like hate is learnt. Hopefully we will cancel out the teaching of current generations and the next one will be homophobia free.

This video gives me 1980s South Korea vibes. The military just massacred thousands of citizens including children who protested for democracy, that led to molotovs flying and citizens fighting back. Tear gas, tanks breaking into university campuses to stop the protests, thousands going to jail and getting tortured, and even ending up in concentration camps. The dictatorship eventually gave in and democracy started in 1987. The world's a scary place.

As a gay; It is very much worth pointing out the similarities between and comparing Stonewall and the current BLM movement. Cause if ya compare them youll notice that a lot of the non-LGBTQ+ people that were there were Black Panthers and other black people and other minorities. Minorities have to stick together and be allies to each other and it is worth remembering that every time any of ours have affected real change it has come thru minorities putting their other fights for rights off for a while to demand the rights of another minority in a time when we can all come together behind that singular fight. And with enough of us banding together the majority cishet and not poor white people eventually hear us and cause our cause is just; they come out to support all of us. But none of us have gotten the support of that majority without first banding together with other minorities; and oftentimes we have to fight their fights first. But the thing is, every fight is our fight, bcuz every fight brings us closer to winning this war. And this war can be won, but only by all of us coming together and proving that we are truly strongest together.

The Mattachines wanted gay people to integrate into society and to toe the line and to be the model citizen; in both how they acted and how they dressed. They hated any gay person who "flaunted" their gayness and were very much against any "men" being femme in any way or the lesbians wearing pants even 9.9 These people thought the only solution was to adapt the way of the straights. There are many differences between the Stonewall riots and the riots based on George Floyd's death. The Stonewall riots happened because the rioters were people that resisted arrest as the police officers were intending to arrest them due to their sexuality due to the time period in the US being a lot less tolerant of the LGBTQ+ population. Many of the riots based on George Floyd's death were not them resisting arrested for their race, gender, sexuality, etc., but instead them rioting because George Floyd died at the hands of police. Such police are being charged for George Floyd's death. Even if they weren't charged, the riots based on George Floyd's death are not justified simply because two wrongs don't make a right. The rioters of the Stonewall riots didn't have much of a choice in the matter, so their riots were a lot more excusable. Also, a difference between the LGBTQ+ rights movement and the current Black Lives Matter movement is that the former is more justified because at the time, as you explain in this video, being LGBTQ+ was illegal, whereas the latter is less justified as discrimination based on race has been made illegal since the Civil Rights Acts of 1964.

Do you really think that a discrimination act actually stopped any discrimination from police? The entire point is that police think they’re keepers of the law and above the law, so they will do whatever they want. That hurts principally minority groups such as black people... Cunnysmythe I don’t think any educated individual who matters is out here arguing that pride is not important or that equality is bad, though. Jack being part of a community also means that he can report first hand experience on what is or isn’t the thing in that community, too. A lot of news reporting isn’t all that factual but rather human and perspective driven.

How about some aspect of comparison of politlcal position vs impact of COVID ? @@FreedomLovingLoyalistOfficial Homosexuality is ancient and is not something people choose. It's not really accurate to consider it popular or not unless there's some underlying cause you can identify that waxes and wains. It's just about how much of it is expressed. And that's probably where gay comes from if I had to guess (not an expert, like you). A description of effeminate or happy/gay men. The presentation of gayness some have. You have to remember that it wasn't always alright to be rude in general. Cursing publicly was for very low class people. Could also have something to do with libel laws. I don't remember the phrase but there's something media can't say about people because it implies they're drunk when it was originally used to avoid lawsuits. You can easily imagine how calling someone homosexual VS gay would have same protective effect.

@@FreedomLovingLoyalistOfficial Yes of course. Pick up a copy of "Berlin Stories" which produced the musical "Cabaret" or go even earlier and find an biography on Oscar Wilde, (19th century) which will always contain rich descriptions of the underground homosexual scene. I don't know about the USA because of its purtain nature , but there is so much recordeded gay history in the UK and Europe. Look at the writings of John Wilmot (2nd Earl of Rochester) from the 17th century, or find information on the a Cambridge Five of the UK 1930's. The history of gay people and the hidden societies they were forced to create is fascinating and often produces moments of creativity and art. Our concept of gender and sexuality has advanced so far that we can describe things in the past that weren’t necessarily called that way at the time; Marsha’s expression was non-binary, they would probably identify as at least ‘gender non-conforming’ if not a trans woman if they were alive today. Marsha using he/him pronouns is literally irrelevant because doing anything else at the time was illegal; people wouldn’t risk changing their pronouns. Drag doesn’t make you trans but everything else that we know about Marsha tells us that they (or she) was not a gay man.
