In this video I analyze game two of round two between the Vancouver Canucks and the Edmonton Oilers. I highlight the insanely elite play of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. I continue gushing about the emergence of Nikita Zadorov. And I go against the grain giving my two cents on the controversial calls the referees made (or didn’t didn’t make). I hope you like the video! Don’t worry nuckheads; the Canucks are taking this in six. 🫡

By all means complain that the refs didn’t do a great job calling everything but I analyzed every second of this game and genuinely found five missed calls on both sides. Ideally, the team that plays a better game goes home with the W. In the case of game two, that happened. Edmonton played better and got the W. Canucks in six 🫡

As an oilers fan I’m dumbfounded that McDavid wasn’t called for the high stick. Canucks being 0-9 with Kelly in the playoffs is absolutely wild and when I found that out I was also pissed off for Canuck fans. I hope game 3 has better reffing for the sake of all our mental health. Reffing that night was terrible in both games. I still don’t understand how bruins got called for the goalie interference (and that’s from someone who wishes both the bruins and cats could lose in round 2)

At least from what I hear the league does not reuse refs in a series so IF and I stress IF there was bias in Kelly Sutherland at least the league got him out of the way in an early game rather than in a game that counts for elimination or the like

As an Oilers fan that watches mostly all our regular season games, it was cool to see the ins and outs of another team and I love the way you break it down. I was worried my opinion on this channel would flip during this series based on takes. Just want to say you've done a great job with the way you talk about controversy and miscalls/misplays that honestly had great impact on the final score. Looking forward to the rest of the series and your continued coverage, thank you NuckHead!

My complaint is not with the missed calls, its the fact that the calls against Edmonton that were missed were dangerous plays. The slew foot on hughes and the boarding on Pettersson in particular
@reneduperron6673
@reneduperron6673 Ай бұрын
After Mcdavid scored his breakaway goal he was tripped into the boards, that could have been ugly. Zadorovs forearm smashing Janmarks head into the boards was "dangerous" aswell. The refs let too much go both ways and players on both sides were put at risk as a reslut. Just call the game the way its written, but that has always been a struggle for nhl refs. Especially in the playoffs.
@spikesdragon14

@@reneduperron6673 The trip on mcdavid wasn’t a straight trip, it was a play on his stick that missed and is pretty common, it didn’t affect the play. If he doesn’t score on that, I’d call it a trip still but I’m not worried for his safety like Nurses hits on Petey. That actually scared me. Big Zs hits on the board have been pretty above board lately and the players ducking or moving with taking the hit seem to compromise themselves worse than just taking it. Hughes took a hit like that during the game that wasn’t called because it’s a fair hit, he just ducked funny and went down because of it.

My issue with your breakdown of the penalties is that the missed calls aren't the same in magnitude. The double minor would have been on Mcdavid, that means 4 minutes without Mcdavid on the ice, which is big considering he played 28 minutes. Also Bieksa made the interesting point that before the final goal mcdavid sat for a few shifts so he was fresh, which allowed him to have tons of speed up the ice and compressed our D, allowing Bouchard to get his shot through. Assuming Mcdavid is going to get his TOI pretty much regardless of what happens, those 4 minutes means that he needs to play more shifts after the penalty to make up for sitting that long. Furthermore, spearing where contact is made is a major. A major penalty almost certainly changes the complexity of the game, especially considering our PP looked pretty good and skinner has looked very shaky. And while the oilers (Mcdavid) are dangerous SH it also probably means that for 5 minutes, they don't really get to attack. The refs missed tons of calls on both sides, but the opportunity cost of our missed calls was much greater than theirs. I generally think you need to just play according to how the refs are calling it, but the lack of accountability is really frustrating. It's perplexing that the NHL refuses to have a 5th ref watching the game in real time and communicating with the on ice refs to make sure egregious calls aren't missed. Anyway, my takeaways from that game are generally positive. Silovs was good, peter scored, and they only looked dangerous when Mcd and Drai were on the ice. We were never going to sweep them and so far we are 2-3 at home and 3-0 on the road, so I don't feel bad about losing home ice. Coconuts glow

my biggest frustration from the game was Kane’s slewfoot. Not because the canucks would’ve gotten a PP, but because mcdavid scored less than 2 minutes after it happened. If the oilers were on the PK i doubt mcdavid would’ve gotten a breakaway like that. also the act of the slewfoot is the scumiest thing a player can do. there is no tactical advantage, you can’t mistakenly do it, you do it to try hurt people and that’s bullshit.

I think one thing that wasn't mentioned was the fact that the refs could have called it after the fact - when the refs noticed that hughes was bleeding. Instead of reviewing the play, they kicked one of our best players off the ice. Also funny that the betting odds for the game changed after the refs for the game were announced. Unlucky tbh
@nuckingaround
@nuckingaround Ай бұрын
So, I can’t find a clear answer on that. I don’t think they’re actually allowed to do that. If there’s no call on the play and no refs saw anything happen, they can’t check the footage. All they saw was Hughes bleeding and complaining. Unfortunately, as far as I’m aware, the rules don’t consider that to be enough to warrant a video review. They’re not even allowed looking up at the jumbotron. Being a referee is a game within itself and it really shouldn’t be.

The hit on Petey was from the side, wasn't boarding, Petey's just light on his feet. The boarding on Janmark by Myers on the other hand was a legit penalty. There was also the hit from behind on Hyman that he glossed over. Hyman was also bleeding on his high stick, so it should be counted as 2, just as Hughes' was. Shit happens in hockey. If refs were able to make every single call of every incident on the ice, the 2008 playoffs would just about be ready to commence round three. Admittedly, I was pissed at the high stick to Hughes and thought it deserving of a five minute major or even a game misconduct as it did draw blood, but I got over it, Hughes got over it, and we came back and won game three. The scrum at the end of game three, however, was also a much smaller issue than it has turned out to be. Soucy and McDavid spoke immediately after and they were both cool, Connor accepted his apology, and both understand that shit happens. I chirp about missed calls, too, everybody does, but at the end of the day we all have to realize that every team, and every player are all equally guilty of cheap shots, and that very single game is riddled with cheap shots. In closing: I'm psyched that at least one Canadian team will make it to round three. Go Canucks Go, and Go Canada Go!

McDavid, being who he is, knows exactly where his stick is. Motive, means, opportunity. Intent to injure. The spearing on Hoglander. Straight up a classless, dirty move, no matter who you play for. Slewfoot on Hughes, as he's going into the boards. Again, a dirty and classless move. Finally, boarding on Petterson. That's a call all day long, head first into the boards, which has been the cause of some serious injuries. Followed up by the elbow. Yes, there were missed calls both ways, but the types of calls, or non-calls to be awarded clearly shows a nervous Oilers team resorting to dirty, antagonizing, and classless plays to win their game.

I think that a new rule or policy should be that if a player is bleeding and they claim it’s a high stick, that should be reviewable. I don’t think it should be any time players think there was a penalty (because yah, that would slow the game down a TON), but when someone is bleeding, it’s obvious something happened and that should be allowed to be reviewed. Wouldn’t take long either.

There’s no rigging happening, but there’s definitely some real bad luck for the Canucks this game. Also consider that the delayed penalty on which Petey’s stick broke was only blown dead because Edmonton’s sixth man took possession meaning that should’ve become a 5on3. The slewfoot should’ve been 5 and a game for sure; he lifted his skate off the ice in a deliberate kick. Definitely not claiming the refs were against us, but I don’t think it’s crazy to say that we were less lucky than the Oilers in that game

@miloc9900

@@Farrell_instincts yeah his leg kicked off the ice, contacting Hughes’ calf and propelling his legs out from underneath him a dangerous distance from the boards. It’s a movement in which Kane made no attempt to play the puck, I saw it live and replays from several angles so I’m pretty sure I saw it but if you disagree that’s your prerogative

If the Referee's called the intent to injure penalties against the Oilers. It would be a safer league to play in.
@leahd4611

I don't blame refs for wins and losses, but I do blame them for making the game hard to watch and more frustrating. What really gets me upset is that they will call very little thing that impedes offense but not not every dangerous play that could cause injury. This isn't specific to a single ref, its league wide and they really need to find a better way.

You missed that Soucy's stick was held after his hit. So when McDevid took possession, play should've been stopped. Both teams scored on missed calls (but the rule 74 (too many men on the ice) says "may be assessed" and the rule 54 (holding) says "shall be accessed" so too many men on the ice might not be missed but judged not to be a penalty because it was during a clear by the other team) :)

If we are trading no calls for no calls, it’s actually in our favour, since their power play is far better then ours. We actually want refs that don’t call stuff even if we lose out on more power plays than the oilers do. Edit: I wrote this comment after watching 2 minutes and you came to the same conclusion lol.

Not blaming the refs for the Canucks not winning the game but I do criticize them for not doing their job, a big part of that is player protection and penalizing those who take liberties. If they can't do that then just make it like Rollerball-no penalties no time limit. Go Canucks Go!

You know how when a new Marvel movie, or really any franchise type of movie comes out, everyone thinks they know the plot, how the story will play out, but when it doesn't turn out exactly the way they envisioned it they get angry, "This movie sucks!", they start acting paranoid thinking there's a conspiracy out to ruin their lives and blame everyone but themselves for the movie not being what they expected? It's the same thing with sports, particularly with fanbases that only follow their home teams and don't care about the league or sport as a whole, the team is an extension of their ego or self image, "We won", "We played hard", they attach themselves to a team and envision them being unbeatable, when they lose they go through the same "Why is everyone against ME!?" paranoid, finger pointing, conspiracies etc., they take whatever happens to their team personally, they can't handle failure or rejection very well, it's always someone else's fault. If anyone in the league, players, coaches, GMs etc. thought that a referee was biased they file a grievance with the head office and investigate the claims, a committee is formed and they do a full review of every game that particular ref has called. You know why no refs are being called out and fired as biased by the league? Because it's not happening, the only people seeing it are the people who's teams lost, and the occasional, "We won even though the refs were trying to stop us" Always with the "we", there is no "we", fans are JAFOs.
