Vignettes can be an easy shortcut to get to a certain look, but here’s how you can think about your image in a slightly different way to get an outstanding grade.

People should be careful with tracking lighting. In some cases It can make it look like someone is using a follow spot. Pretty rare that in a room that the light follows a person around the room. When assessing the light - the lights are set up with the practicals hinting to the audience to where the light might be coming from and it's not unusual for an actor to lean in or out of the light- which is what looks natural. So careful tracking and pretend that light is coming from a source and most likely a fixed source.

Thinking of a photographic approach, tailored vignettes are best used as a scene light augmentation tool, while classic vignettes are best used as a lens effect tool - slight exposure falloff, focus falloff, and increased chromatic aberration. Great video!

As a DP who grades most of my own work, I find myself thinking about this approach even when I am on set. I love knowing that I can knock down a background or the far side of the frame to create that spatial contrast in Resolve, IF I dont have time to execute it in the real world. Love your approach and level detail in your videos Cullen. Thanks so much for all you share!

The joy of being a hobbyist and not knowing "technically" how to use Vignettes when ever I experimented with them, I instinctively followed your examples. Follow the light. 😀😀 I'm also really liking your new Studio/Tutorial setup.

I'm just learning too much from those videos. You really helped me cross this limit of color grading which was very abstract for me at the time. With your lessons i'm now feeling more and more free when it comes to transform a footage and guide people perception towards what i really want to express.

Hello Cullen, thank you for your good and very helpful videos! Could you make a video about calibrating your reference monitor especially when your are working with a Rec709-A output colorspace (to avoid export gamma shift on MAC OS). When connected through a DeckLink. This seems to be such a important topic nobody talks about...

Beautiful demo & explanation as always. I’ve often wondered if/when Lightroom & Resolve will have custom shapes for their power windows/linear gradients. As in, we draw the shape we want, then the app approximates a smoother curve out of it. The tricky thing I found was excessive darkening in the areas where the power windows/gradients overlap.

Hi Culle! I have a question about your parallel nodes structure. Do you always add your parallel nodes horizontally, never vertically? I recently watched a video from Darren Mostyn about how he tacles multipel power windows in a frame. And he is stacking them in parallel nodes in a vertically way. Does that work in your structure as well? I have never seen you stack parallel nodes on top of each other? Hope you understand my question here. I am not critical in any way. I just want to know how it works. Can someone else explain please, I would be very thankful!

Hi Cullen, I really appreciate your videos. My question is: in the first example, where the light is coming towards the camera, could it be more correct to use the DEPTH MAP tool first so that the vignette tool doesn't influence the actors?
@CullenKelly
@CullenKelly 6 ай бұрын
I prefer to favor simplicity over complexity. While the depth map tool could do a fine job, a power window is a much simpler operation that also travels across more shots.

Hi Cullen, can you share about look decision for multiple clips? Do you keep the split toning and hue consistent between multiple clips, or it vary between each individual clip?
@CullenKelly
@CullenKelly 6 ай бұрын
Great question! For the look design portion you can do an overall look (where you can choose to keep the split toning and hue consistent), and in the grade you can fine tune things further. Hope that helps!

Might be a bit blunt, but don't you think that using the same general vignette adds coherence and sense of flow from shot to shot that adds to an overall look of the video?
@CullenKelly
@CullenKelly 6 ай бұрын
Good question! In its simplest form, the primary job of most vignettes is to direct the viewers eye. I typically prefer to use a vignette that accentuates the light shape within each shot, directing the viewers eye toward the subject. I tend to find that a generic vignette shape can become more noticeable to the viewer from shot to shot
