It makes me mad that all the "worst" degrees are degrees that progress humanity. Like everyone hates The Arts and thinks Art degrees are useless until Beyonce, Taylor Swift and Marvel drop new content then all of a sudden it's "We love the arts"

I went to a community college and did a certificate of completion doing game art and programming. I loved it. I only took the classes I wanted to earn the certificate and some extra art classes and I didn't take out any loans and paid it all out of pocket. I met my current boyfriend of 2 years at my college's gaming club. The college experience was worth it for me because I knew right out of highschool I didn't want to go into debt just to get an art degree that's not really needed for me and that's how I stumbled upon the certificates of completion. They're not degrees, take less time, you only take the classes you need for it (no core curriculum) and you still get a piece of paper saying you went to college. I'm now working at an art nonprofit, a painting studio and I have my own business selling my artwork.

I was paid nearly $700 although I didn't put it aside, it lasted me through my freshman year, helped me with car troubles, helped my mom out at home, put gas in my car, got me snacks I wanted. Now that I have debt I've decided that IF I take out another loan I'll immediately put that money aside and get it into an account for my debt. I've saved $400 already on a $150 a week pay (and no, I didn't give up living for saving. I still go out) from a 2 month job. I'm really proud of where God brought me. I just recently found out my degree is useless without a bachelor's, but my only goal is to graduate without debt and keep living. God got me with or without my degree.

Before going to college, I did the research and realized all the high paying jobs required HARD science, engineering, geeky degrees. It is very hard to have the "college experience" with those degrees. People go to school to party, not to pursue a career that has a ROI worth the college debt. I have 180k in student loans. I am on point to pay that off in 3 years because I choose computer science.

I was an online student for a year or for the first semester and I realized it got too expensive so I dropped out. Nobody wants to talk about how job searching is actually a talent. I know young folks who are really really good at navigating the job search. They have great resumes, utilize Internet and offline resources and are typically really fantastic interviews. They don't sit on tik Tok ranting, raving and complaining all day. College can be an effective tool but you have to be smart enough to know how to go for free and then use it to get the good job. Many many folks are doing this. It's not impossible but not everyone is blessed with the talent, intelligence and patience to get it.

I then went down a rabbit hole looking student loans and forums where people talked about how negatively it impacted their life. That was 12 years ago and it’s even worse now! I quickly decided to find an affordable college and a degree that would give me a stable career. Best decision I ever made! So many adults were like “everyone has student loans - don’t worry! I am about 90k in student loan debt (public, state school!). I work in my field and my advance degree has been a requirement for the last four positions I’ve had. During the pandemic, I was designated an essential worker and worked for my state’s public health agency with extra duties (unpaid). There are many systemic issues here: 1) college costs are way too high in the U.S. and it is growing 2) essential social, civic, and social welfare positions are outrageously underpaid and under valued. These jobs are essential for our society to function yet there is a deplorable disparity in pay. Yes, individual choices matter but this system isn’t built for the average person to win.

I worked in HR for years and I always try and steer young people to civil service after high school. If you get into an entry level civil service position, you may be able to get college paid for by the agency or union. Many civil service employees earn their degrees for free then promote into a new gig by bidding. If you're already in college and needing experience, look into temping. Check with every temp agency in your area and see if they have any positions that would fit you. Apply for all of them. If none of them do, please look into volunteer opportunities. Volunteer experience will count on civil service applications IF the volunteer duties match the civil service position you're applying for. Pro tip: MS Office skills tend to be very prized when looking for temp office positions and entry level civil service clerical positions. In most civil service grading, you get points based on experience and education. I also recommend getting one or more of the MOS certificates. These make you highly hireable. I wish all job hunters success! I'm in a transitional time in my life right now but some day I want to start a nonprofit that assists those looking for stable, permanent, employment that pays a living wage.

Read this book called "Four Lost Cities" and it talked about 4 ancient societies that crumbled. One was Pompei, one was this Thai society that ran on debt. People went into debt, which motivated people to work. But the society guaranteed, GUARANTEED that the debt would not crush them. They made sure everyone had necessities. Housing, CLEAN water, food, etc, no matter their debt. And no one's debt was INHERITED, it was only attached to that one person. So yeah, our model of student debt is WILD since bankruptcy doesn't even get rid of it, and debt can be inherited.

I’m working in a job associated with my major and doing well. Most of my family completed college and graduate degrees and none of us are struggling with student loan debt (my sister in law is, but we ain’t related lol). You have to research and hustle and work hard and plan from high school but it can be done. I believe a college degree is extremely important and the success of my family bears that out. Okay, as a person who did do the original college thing. I can honestly say kids should go, but some need to go to community and work, others need to go completely online and work. Others need to save before they go and parents should pay for their kids and plan ahead to help them get started (within reason). So many jobs say they are hiring people without degrees now and they only mean specific people. People with a military background, people with experience, people “who know a guy”. College is still very valid, but no one should go into debt for more than the actual career pays, no one should take out more than the degree costs trying to flex, and everyone should research the careers trajectory before committing to the degree. Some people may go the military which is good, work a regular job and go online, but the gatekeepers of companies have degrees. Love the vid!

I don't regret the debt because it's manageable with my current income but im still salty uni is so expensive in the first place. For profit bootcamps have been popping up like flies for this field due to a perceived demand for these roles. This field is not easy to get into, just like many other fields in tech, without connections. Demand is high but NOT for entry level positions; it's so hard to just get in I feel for you. It's a lucrative field and if you can get in, secure. I'm absolutely not telling you to give up, but just be careful! 12k is a LOT for a bootcamp when there are many free online courses that teach the same thing. Where a bootcamp would help is those industry connections so you wanna vet that they WILL help you with that. Good luck!!!

Not gonna lie, the expectations and stress have been grueling but it pays 80k for entry level and my team is full of great people. I think the stress will be well worth it for the range of career trajectories I can follow. If I were interested in getting into cybersecurity, then I would stay on my current client where we’re working with management to remediate their IT controls and facilitate the annual audits of the company. This project will only last another year or two, but it’s likely a large portion of our team will stay on the same client with different projects that target more IT needs of the company. Some of the managers on my team are expecting to stay on projects with this company until the point the company hires them directly at a director+ role. This is because they will have 5+ years of knowledge in the company’s environment and that is valuable experience. Committing to a career in IT compliance seems like a solid way to learn IT infrastructure and network with IT departments at the various companies you end up working for as a contractor. I’m personally unsure where I’m heading, because the consulting route seems too high-stress for me. This should point me to find a laidback IT career but I’m unsure with the layoffs if that still exists. And I do like business for other aspects, so I am looking into staying in compliance consulting until I’m ready to leave corporate all together.

I'm torn on this, when accepted into a college they disclose what tuition is and all details are available online. If someone makes that choice then that's on them. At some point, due to the accessibility of information, there has to be some accountability. I went to get a bachelors...got accepted into private school and saw the tuition and lost my mind. So I instead went in state and didn't take out any extra loans and graduated with a 21k bill.

Because of my parents savings and helping me out (a MASSIVE privilege) I’m 30k in debt for university and 20k in debt for cosmetology school. I don’t necessarily want to start a business. Would I like to have control over my life? Yes. Would I like not having any benefits or pto, etc? No. Right now I wax brows with benefit, and I plan to move up in the next few years and work in their social media department. I do still want to go to grad school for theater, but only at a school that covers tuition. Is loving and pursuing theater practical? No. But I know I would regret it the rest of my life if I never tried.

Stuck in a weird place with my education now. I am lucky enough to have no debt, but that's because I paid out of pocket for most of my Associates (7 years). Now I want to be a librarian but you need a masters for that and my education was interrupted from COVID. What's weird right now is my workplace offers special scholarships (that I qualify for) for a Masters degree in librarianship, but not bachelors (which I don't have). Right now I'm waiting to hear back from a dozen scholarships and qualifying for grants that only cover one class if I go full-time and the rest is coming out of pocket. If I wasn't guaranteed funding for my masters degree I would have said screw it to a bachelors degree.

Some forms of education are actually worth it. A 2-year nursing or physical therapist assistant degree is worth the cost. These two degrees can cost under 50k and Artificial cannot replace these two positions. Some trades are worth the cost.... plumbing, electrician, construction ect... College is a business and you must be strategic about your major. You usually need a doctorate for degrees in social science to gross six figures. Do your own thorough research about the ROI

Pro Tip: college degrees are not created equal. Paying $100,000 for a communications degree is not the same as paying $100,000 for a software engineering degree. I am not knocking any degree, but the amount of money you should pay for a degree should scale with the average income coming out of college. Its ok to pay $100,000 for a degree if the average income coming out is close to that number. The issue is, people are paying these student loans when they have nearly 0 chance of having an income even close to the amount they owe. Which means they will be burden by the this for a very long time.

I did sacrifice my “fun” college years and don’t get the stereotypical college experience, but in thankful to not have to worry about student loans and now at my rank, I make about 80k after taxes and TSP. I own a home that I rented out once I moved as well. But what I hate about the college landscape now is how prevalent cheating and lack of integrity is. Nobody genuinely cares about getting their moneys worth and actually learning/applying the concepts. They just use chatGPT or AI or BS everything and then complain about their letter grades. Then wonder why when they graduate, they still can hardly critically think or write well or speak well. You have to use college as a means to getting out of your comfort zone and actually pushing yourself. Nowadays no one wants to do the work but they will cry and whine about their instructor not giving them an A despite them not even deserving it. Also too many kids are choosing schools just so they can go and party somewhere or be laid up with someone’s son when that someone’s son is not gonna pay that damn tuition 😂

This is why I always advocate for people to get certifications over going to university until you 100% know you need a degree for the path you want. I also tell people who are looking to figure out their major is that if you can’t finish one book about a particular profession then you shouldn’t major in it. The more books you can read & remember about a topic the more likely you should major in it. My last tip for people who are considering college is to pay as much as you can in cash & make a loan your final option. People I see with 50k+ in debt are people who “focused on school” and did not work. So their loans also paid for their rent, car, food etc. Or they went to a private school with limited scholarship options. Look at the full financial picture before you commit.

For anyone looking into getting an associates or bachelors, check if your state has a Community College Opportunity Grant. If you make less than $65k a year, you qualify for a fully funded education via community college (less than $100k still qualifies, but for a percentage). And there's a grant for the following 2 years of a bachelors. It's a great option for those who can't afford a loan. I know California and NJ have it, other states might too.

It's not fun making a lot of money and being unable to live/save like I do because of the debt. I always tell people not to go if they can work a trade as you're going to be a lot further along a lot faster than myself, but as a backend engineer getting to play video games during meetings and how chill the job is does make the ends justify the means to me. My wife and I both went to college, but were very fortunate to not come out with a buncha debt - she got a masters in Psych (never used it professionally) and I left before getting my degree in History (never used it professionally) HOWEVER - as counterintuitive as it might sound we both went into performing arts, and have done fine. We still use what we learned in both fields as part of our work, but for the past few decades it's been theatre that has paid the bills. Weird. Now our son is in college, but we saved for a long time to have enough to hopefully pay his way through a state college and leave with no debt. We're not rich - we're just careful. We're not flashy, and don't flex with anything, no expensive hobbies. Just calm, within our means. revolutionary artists.

I highly suggest considering community college. In most states, a Pell Grant (which you don't pay back) will cover all or nearly all the costs. You will likely have to work outside of school and rent a room at an apartment since a grant will not cover living costs. You can even get a nursing degree, pharmacy tech degree, paralegal degree, etc. all well paying jobs and covered by Pell Grants at community college programs.

I agree mostly to the argument that you should not go into debt for college but it doesn’t always hold true. There are degrees that do not pay enough and yes, they should be scrapped. But there are professions where you need a degree- architects, doctors, engineers, etc. Not everyone can afford university with straight up cash. So debt is sometimes needed. I guess it just depends if the individual is capable of paying the debt

Teaching may be low pay BUT you get a pension and virtually free health insurance- especially when you hit 65. You can teach in low income school districts and have a portion of your school loans paid off yearly. You can retire at 52 and receive a pension check and insurance every month for life. You can then work another job after retirement. I did… life is good.

I worked at Starbuck's during college for about 6 months. They only work with one specific online university. And not all degrees at the University of Phoenix Online are covered. You must work at least 20 hours a week to maintain it, which isn't too bad. These programs are great, but you'll want to make sure you figure out which schools and degrees are covered and how much. Universal Studios, where my hubby works, has a program but they don't cover everything even though it is pitched that way. Disney World will not let you know what colleges or degrees they cover until after hired, which I felt was kinda sketch but they're actually really good to work compared to others in Florida. So, look for those programs but make sure you pick the job with the program best for you. Don't be shy about quitting for a different job if you find their program doesn't offer what you need.

These are all valid points but that one chick needed ALL of adulthood laid out for her. Like she was mad that her high school teachers couldn’t teach her a class on the whole rest of her life, husband and kids included.

Great topic today! I have a very unfavorable opinion and that would be that most college even community colleges might be a waste of time.. It really depends on the field you want to work in, which most of us really don't know when we're that young! Four of my siblings older and younger who went to college can only get a job working at Walmart or an Amazon Warehouse... I dropped out of high school when I was about 16, I make more than most of my family in a year and I'm 27 now. The only exception might be my grandpa who also dropped out of high-school believe it or not. (I didn't know that until a little later in life) Thats not the point though and I'm not advocating for anyone to drop out of school I'm just trying to say that "the path" most people try to tell you to take isn't always the best for you. Before anyone here wants to throw shade or something, my dad knew how bored I was in school and we had an agreement where if i made straight A's for so long I could drop out. I was also in all AP classes. To sum everything up I just don't think you need to put yourself through that much stress especially if your income after it's all said and done isn't going to even come close to what you had to pay to go and what it will take to live.

I went to college. I was low income paying the different FAFSA couldn't cover by working the whole time. Because of this, only affording part-time, it took 10 years total for my multiple degrees. Degrees that at the time I entered college were required to get my dream job. During the pandemic, I graduated. But the pandemic changed my industry and so many people left it that they stopped requiring the degree and cut the salaries. So, now I have debt and a degree. But, to work in my industry would mean getting paid $30k a year and having to be required to live in NYC. So, I work as an editor in law for a legal service provider instead at make over 10k more than that and get to work remote. The level of anger I felt for my industry to remove degree requirements and slash the salaries from 60k to 30k the year I graduated cannot be understated. Edit: When I say my industry, I mean book publishing. Not the industry I now work in, law pays pretty well.

If your parents did not set you up to succeed to even go to college, then you should not go to college (unless it is a major that would pay well). Even better, why is it that people hate community college? You can transfer after you graduate and it is much cheaper. The problem is that parents will push the American dream but don't even set their their children to start with that dream. It is the same with credit cards, mortgages, medical bills, personal loans, etc. If people knew how to not overspend as well as understand you don’t need to go to college for an arts degree, then we wouldn't be that much in debt.

📢 THIS IS THE ONE! I agree! It doesn’t make them a bad parent either. Many parents do the best they can and just can’t afford that. And THAT’S OKAY! But just asking them to do it without considering the effects it could have is not in the child’s best interest in my opinion, especially if they Aren’t willing to help! After 18 most people are on their own financially. I seen that way too many times and the kid suffered as an adult after. Even at 18 you have to do what’s best for YOU long term. College can be a great option if you have a good plan and I’m with you about community college 1000%! A lot of people Want the big name ones all four years. It’s cool if you can afford it but if not…whyyy when there are other ways like doing 2 years community and maybe 2 at a well known after to cut cost… Just my take but you have great points!!! 🏆

The biggest thing that needs to stop is that many jobs require positions have a degree when truthfully most jobs do not required a degree. Times have changed and everybody doesnt need to go to college and not evey jobs needs to have a degree requirement. Skilled trades are.good but not everyone has thr aptitude for skilled trades.

Issue with a lot of those high demanding jobs too are that a lot of them need lots of networking cause many won't take you cause they need experience dispite going to college for it. My family is in poverty and I was going to go into computer science cause it had a lot of well paying job, but I couldn't afford college at all so I can't get into the jobs I wanted cause I can't afford college but dispite my family knowing very well how much college cost dispite us having no money just so I stay In loads of debt cause they wanted money from me
