Thanks, Marisa! I am just coming off my first reverse diet thanks to you. I increased my daily calories from 1500 to 2300 while running MAPS anabolic. I'm a 57 year old woman in menopause and gained 4 lbs over 4 months. Since I was still a relative beginner lifter with body fat a little north of 26%, I was able to noticeably lose fat while gaining muscle. The biggest lesson I learned was to not shy from carbs. I had to lean on complex carbs more than simple carbs. Too many simple carbs interrupt my sleep, especially with night sweats. One of my favorite ways to get in those complex carbs is the smoothie bowl. I've been subbing butternut squash for the sweet potato (because I can buy it already cut up in the freezer section) and it's still amazing. I love playing with all the flavors and add ons to this recipe!

Thank you for this Marissa! Thanks to your videos and many others I started going to the gym on September 2021 and eating clean with a focus on protein. So far I lost 10Kg, and despite not seeing much change, I'm very happy with my improvements. I feel way stronger and I love that now I can eat 1500Kcal and not starve myself (slowly reverse dieting). I always get discouraged when my period approaches, as I gain easily 1 to 1.5Kg, but I know I will be back to normal when it ends :)

This is perfect information for what I'm going through right now on my journey to heal my bones and get back muscle that I lost from under eating, I've seen some of your past videos where you talk about reverse dieting and the benefits and there was a part of me that thought "this might be a good thing for me I'm not happy with what I'm doing right now I'm lost" but I didn't want to increase my calorie intake out of fear that I would gain weight and I would feel even more awful about my body, but when I got my osteoporosis diagnosis that was a major wake-up call and right away I started increasing my calories but still not enough to be healthy and heal my bones, and before I used to always wonder why my muscles weren't growing looking back I realize they were not growing because even though I was strain training and lifting weights I was only eating around 1,500 calories a day ☹️ but after my diagnosis and watching your videos has encouraged me to increase my calories , since then I'm feeling better I feel more energetic I've noticed that my workouts are stronger but I did gain weight, my butt got bigger and my thighs are thicker I honestly hate it because I want to be lean ,,, lean and healthy But I understand I have to do this to get healthy, I'm hoping that the way that I gain is more muscle than fat since my workouts have gotten stronger and my body has been starving for many many years I've been underweight for a while I'm not used to having a butt I hope in time my body will become lean but not just lean for aesthetic reasons lean and healthy I'm never ever under eating again that is a promise I make to myself ♥️

The problem for me is that I tried to increase my calories, and I gained fat and my muscles shrinked. I got to reduce it again but I can see my biceps reducing its size. I’m just happy with my size and aesthetic. Focus on the lower rep range: 2-5 reps for compound exercises and like 6-8 for isolation exercises. Phase 1 of my workout program Brains & Gains is perfect for this. It emphasizes strength without building as much muscle size. It also sounds like you just need to eat more!! Try reverse dieting or even just adding a 100-200 extra calories in during the day and see if that helps!

I know this is really odd, but do you have any tips on how to eat when fasting for Ramadan? I’ve been fasting for the past two weeks and I noticed I haven’t been able to hit any of my macros & I’ve been losing some muscle mass :-(
@MissFitAndNerdy
@MissFitAndNerdy 2 жыл бұрын
You're not going to lose a significant amount of muscle in 2 weeks. You lose muscle at half the rate you build it so in 2 weeks you'd lose only 1 week of progress and that would be if you stopped training entirely. If you look like you're losing size, you're likely just losing the intramuscular water weight because you're eating fewer carbs. Mind Pump just did a great episode on training/eating around ramadan fasting. I highly recommend listening. The part about ramadan starts at 1:30:52 mindpump.libsyn.com/1789-what-to-do-when-your-workout-progress-stalls-ways-to-determine-if-a-body-part-split-is-right-for-you-how-to-work-out-during-ramadan-more-listener-live-coaching

What do you think of the Caroline Girvan Epic Endgame workout program? I feel like i am making some progress on gaining muscle, but I’m not sure if its the right style of workout for reverse dieting. I have been eating closer to ~2200 calories after eating ~ 1500 calories a day for 2 years. I lost 20 lbs but the constant restriction was taking up all my thoughts and I was weak and skinny-fat, with a bloated soft stomach and weak flabby arms and disproportionately skinny legs. It’s been 5 weeks of eating in a surplus + caroline girvan weighted workouts and I am stronger than ever and have gained 4 pounds. I have way more freedom with what i eat and it’s so much easier to fit enough protein in my diet when i have a larger calorie allotment. Does this workout seem like a good fit or should I go for something more consistent? Do you have any tips for people who have a not so healthy relationship with calorie and macro counting trying to regulate their intake? I typically don’t like to track my calories as the apps I have used in the past tell me to eat somewhere in the 1350-1550 calorie range and have inaccurate guidelines for nutrient intake. So far i have really enjoyed working out more, eating more, and getting stronger, but I want to make sure I am doing it the right way! I am working my way up in weights but I still only use 7.5-10lb dumbbells for my upper body and 20-25lbs for lower body. Do I need to be leveling up more aggressively so I am lifting heavy enough weights to build muscle proportional to my increased intake? I know an important aspect is to “lift heavy” but what does that mean for a 5’5” 120 lb vegetarian who’s a weightlifting beginner? Great video! Thanks for all the info!

If your scale can support that weight, yes! Mine caps out at a certain point and won't be able to read the weight once it gets too heavy. I think the empty blender is enough to make my scale forget how to measure things haha

regarding eating in a calorie surplus for muscle growth, isn't it true that people at a higher mass/body fat level do not need to eat in a surplus? I understand this makes sense for traditional cut and bulk phases, but for people completely new to fitness, and may be doing a body recomp instead, do they really still need to eat in a surplus even if they're hitting protein goals?

That's up to your preference! What matters is your weekly average, so if you want to eat more on some days and less on others, it doesn't matter if it averages out to the right amount :) Some people prefer eating more on their workout days, some find it easier to work out feeling "lighter" - just do what feels best for you.

So you emphasize surplus but what about us that are losing fat also but want to gain muscle. Like I am eating in a “deficit” compared to what I’m used too but that’s because I would be considered obese compared to you. So for us loosing fat and have like 40 pounds to lose would what you say change at all? My nutritionist has me eating at 1540 cal and that’s hard for me to hit. I’m probably more at 1700 cal if I’m honest with myself. Need to track it a bit more. I’m doing 30 min workouts (Beachbody lifting program) with 60 min walking. And lifting heavy for me. Which is like 10pounds.
@MissFitAndNerdy
@MissFitAndNerdy 2 жыл бұрын
If you're obese and your nutritionist has you all the way down to 1540 cals I'd fire that nutritionist. That would be too low for ME and I'm really small. If you're maintaining on less than 2000 calories you might want to reverse diet before focusing on fat loss. You'd likely lose fat while reverse dieting anyway but wouldn't tank your metabolism in the process

11:31, Yooooo it's about time you found another boyfriend! I was just thinking about how all these men complain that women can't cook or they're fat and here you are, hot bod, can cook and you were single too long. I have a base workout, then I have other exercises that I just add as I feel like, especially in the summer when I do calisthenics. This might look like, banded pull ups, elevated push ups, Australian push ups and banded dips base work out, Rotates are banded squats/banded lateral walks, banded pull downs, twisting and lateral movements, up and down playground structure, lateral raises, box jumps. This past winter I did a barbel routine rows and deadlift, added 20 pounds to them. I also did some bicep curls as a rotate in and didn't get to add any weight. The year before it snowed a lot so I shoveled a lot as my main work out. (I'm also a nanny and work out in the playground, though I just switched jobs so we'll see if I can work out while working at this new job, kids are way younger now. Might work out before or after work also at the playground). I only do 3 days a week because I have 3 nanny jobs, a cleaning job, 2 tutoring jobs.... lol Even working out at work, sometimes I can't because the park is too busy or the kids need too much attention.
