Which is why Apple will never allow MacOS on the iPad. MacOS allows traditional software acquisition channels where Apple just provides the hardware and OS, possibly a licensed feature or API, , where IOS / iPadOS app store means Apple gets to steal a 30% cut of all app vendor revenue. Ya'll are looking at this backwards. What's really going to happen is that Apple will eventually dump MacOS on the desktop / laptops and branch a desktop iPadOS which will then allow Apple to theive 30% of that software revenue as well. Mark my words, Apple is determined to replicate their IOS app store model across every product line they have, finish walling off those gardens and ensure all software companies pay for the privilege of selling software, subscriptions or services to all Apple product users.

My ipad is simply just a glorified PDF viewer/editor honestly. I use it for sheet music so, reading scores, writing music, editing music, the list goes on. For years I would like to have the ability to do software development on the iPad as easily as I do on my Mac. There was a move towards it with Swift Playground having some of the capabilities of Xcode, but it just stalled and never matured to anything beyond playfulness. I still lack comprehensive editors and IDEs like Visual Studio Code and the JetBrains suite. I also think that some software development workflows lean a lot on switching between apps and having them side-by-side, which means that iPadOS needs to improve its multi-tasking capabilities to allow to do this more conveniently. I also use a lot of community tools which I think would mean that the barrier to create an app will need to be lowered for an iPad work-env to be as lively as a desktop one. I can't work without brew. This can either be sandboxed or managed system-wide somehow, but this needs to be solved. And I'm all for what you're saying with not having macOS on the iPad. It's just that iPadOS needs to improve to accommodate these very real requirements, or introduce software development workflow alternatives that solve the same basic needs. For instance the graphical flow editor of Unreal Engine can be amazing to work with on the iPad.

The problem with the iPad is that iPadOS is annoying to do many basic tasks. Apple intends that annoyance unfortunately. They call it a simpler experience for the everyday user. As always, great work on this video! In a scene littered with clickbait, invitations for outrage, and over-discussion of Apple “leaks” and speculation, this is a truly needed breath of fresh air! How lucky are we that in answering the prompt to “make a channel that appeals to Apple users,” LMG and Mac Address didn’t create a channel based on specs, leaks, news, and the latest Apple controversy wheel. Nor did they go for something that would vaguely appeal to “hipsters in coffee shops,” the status obsessed, fans of lifestyle brands, or those who buy the devices because they look nice. Instead, they took inspiration from what Apple originally was in the first place: computers designed for everyday people to use them. And so Mac Address investigates how people actually use these devices, and the highs and lows of those everyday experiences. The result is a gem among channels!

Yep. That's what people want, to be able to use an external monitor off the iPhone and run a desktop OS UI. It doesn't have to be macOS but that would be ideal as there is so much already available for macOS. Or for a tablet, to be able to do that or run the UI on the tablet screen and connecting a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Unfortunately, we all know the main reason they haven't done this is likely because they want to pressure people to have to buy more of their hardware. Their laptop and desktop sales would likely decline if people could run a desktop OS off their phones and tablets. It just really sucks that they may avoid doing this for as long as possible.

@@jackedup447 Sure. Though it seems a bit strange to me that this intended market doesn't include developing apps for the iPad itself, when they offer an M2 processor in a 13 inch tablet with a keyboard dock that surely could be perfectly suitable for that if they let you do it. And then for the most part I can use Windows, macOS, or Linux for any professional or non-professional purpose. So the iPad is artificially limited and only suitable for certain things, it doesn't really make sense to talk about it as a replacement or alternative to a real computer in any general sense. Even if it's a useful tool for certain things. But it also *could* be suitable for all of this. If the keyboard dock works well enough the 13 inch iPad pro could be a totally fine Laptop replacement with an unrestricted OS. Presumably the M2 chip should be able to drive dual external monitors (not sure if the iPad allows this currently) so it could be docked and work as a desktop. And performance should be good enough for most things. But Apple doesn't let you do that. Probably to ensure they can keep making revenue from the app store and in-app purchases more than any philosophical or design concern. So the iPad doesn't seem particularly useful to me personal, even though it *could* be if Apple *let* it be.

Apple realy does not care about cannibalizing thier own product sales, otherwise they would have never let you listen to music on the iPhone. They understand better than most companies that it is much better to self cannibalize than to sit back and leave a good idea> iPads running macOS would not impact Mac sales at all, after all once you add a keyboard case with trackpad to an iPad and add the additional battery to make it be able to run macOS and have the same batter life the iPad setup would in fact cost users more and make apple a lot more margin as the accessories are way higher margin than the hardware.

I agree that MacOS shouldn’t be on iPad but the iPadOS should have capabilities that a “professional” expects to have. Like he brought up file management which has been kinda improved and I like that you have access to your different cloud storage solutions. I would also like to see iPadOS treat video out differently. 90% of the time, it mirrors the screen the same way you mirror a screen on airplay. It’s full of compression, there’s some slight delay which makes it kinda nauseating if you want to hook it up to a big screen to work on a Google doc which is already painful enough on the iPad, or play some games. I don’t need a full desktop mode but maybe don’t leave it to app developers to support external display to make use of the video out capability of the very expensive tablet I just bought

Respectfully, I don't think this video makes the point you think it's making. Your point is predicated on the assumption that putting MacOS on the iPad would require exhaustively eliminating iPad-specific features, while I don't think that's true. There's no reason that Apple couldn't expose developer APIs for the specific human interfaces that the iPad has; they already do this for touchpad gestures on MacBooks and the similar-but-different gestures on the Magic Mouse. MacOS would, if executed correctly, be exclusively a step forward for the iPad, while keeping all of the things we like about it the same.

I've used an iPad Pro for my work as a classical singer and stage actor for years, and I switched from Windows to MacOS a bit over one year ago because of the fantastic used prices the Mac Mini M1 was going for (Lockdowns weren't kind to stage artists' wallets), but I miss the touchscreen. On Windows I used the touchscreen all the time whether I was making demos or promotional material (videos, photos, flyers, etc.), creating music in my spare time or using Notion. Storage and assets organisation is also horrific, because file explorer on Windows while not great is decades ahead of MacOS, and don't even get me started on Apple's complete lack of developer support! iPadOS while theoretically more limited has almost never been a frustrating experience to me. It's logical and friendly and highly conducive to quick turnarounds and creative flow. If anything, I want a juiced-up iPadOS on the Mac. Except for the 100% unintuitive and clearly inferior to everything Settings app (go Android!), so of course that's what they decided to port to MacOS

What sucks is that while the iPad is great at what apple intends you to use it for, but unlike a computer there is no ability for the user to create their own use cases. I bought an iPad because apple told me it was good for note taking, but as soon as you try to do something apple didn't think you would want to do, the whole experience breaks down.

It succeeds at being a tablet but when I need it to be a laptop it sucks. Examples being file sharing, the webcam shutting off if I move to another application, the awkwardness of trying to upload or download content to and from the device. Thing is these annoying quirks aren’t noticeable on the surface, you only notice these limitations when you’ve used it for a while. Those limitations get annoying.

This is a huge advantage Windows Tablets had over iPad, and might have now that Windows Tablets are coming back and with ARM Windows improving, iPad might get some good competence. I have a Dell Windows Tablet with Wacom capabilities and it's just a delight to use it. Before buying it I was interested in iPad but come on, you can't have the real office suite, real Adobe CC, the real reliability of a Desktop system. There are two ways: iPadOS get REAL Desktop capabilities, or MacOS and iPadOS get merged in a universal system that can run both. Because iPad will be just a glorified Netflix screen until it really gets the Desktop experience, it's still a "specific work" device

You can see hints that they're heading in the direction of enabling the "Pro" features we crave for it when it's docked on a keyboard with a trackpad/mouse. Admittedly it's gotten a LOT better but still feels like there's too much hand holding for what amounts to a Pro device that can cost as much as a new Macbook Pro when kitted out. When they initially said Stage Manager and External Display support would be limited to the M series chips it made me slightly optimistic that they might start developing a "Pro" version of iPadOS strictly limited for the Pro models. I think Samsung's Dex would be a fantastic model to follow if this is where they choose to go for it in the future. Restricting a more mature desktop experience to docked would be a very fair compromise.

It enable always on dock, multitasking window similar to the ones of stage manager but should not auto-align to a grid. Minimise feature similar to the Mac with swiping the window to the dock being the gesture. I'm an M1 iPad Pro user and I use it for video editing in Luma Fusion. The only big issue I have with iPad OS is lack of options and granularity for backups. It only supports backing up to iCloud, and does not support excluding certain folders from the backup. I can either back up all my huge transient video editing files to an expensive iCloud storage Subscription, or I can't backup ANY files. And i am interested in developing apps directly for iOS if only the iPad supported proper development tools like apples own xcode (I'd also want visual studio but I'd only see that happening if apple first made xcode for it themselves). I don't see why Apple doesn't implement something similar to the SteamDeck. You can have it in 'gaming' mode and 'desktop' mode by pushing a button in the power menu. iPad could easily toggle between what it is now, and a MacOS environment couldn't it? Also, I've recently been using my 11" 2018 iPad Pro in Sidecar and have even set it up as my primary monitor a few times. The screen resolution is certainly sharp enough to be used as an 11" macbook display. The only difficulty was using programs like Adobe Illustrator where I have a large amount of toolbars open on the right hand side of the screen. Otherwise, it was more than sufficient and obviously a fair trade-off for portability.

I will say Johnathan's needs are slightly more complicated than most: For quick edits and shiz, basic assemblies, I can see this working well for editors like me, especially when mostly working with 1080 and 4k content, in MOV and MPEG formats. In those cases, it's close to miraculous.

That's quite the hot take, but I respect the reasoning and actually agree with quite a bit of it. Well done, I didn't think I would be convinced to think twice about Mac OS being on the iPad

It would be sexy if apple allowed mac programs to just run on an ipad a lot of things would be possible on the go If they could make something similar to dex mode, call it Cook mode, you get a choice of a desktop environment whenever you need it

You should use Pages as a word editor on iPad. Word/PowerPoint/Excel are a mess (not only on iPad) when you compared with the iWork suite 😉

iPad should just quick-boot to MacOS when you connect a keyboard and then have shared storage, shared settings, and some Handoff features. Then you'd get a bonus touchscreen and Pencil input when using MacOS. Disconnect the keyboard and it would go right back to being an iPad and save the MacOS state for when you reconnect the keyboard. They would slowly merge the two operating systems over time (like they're already doing) to make them one seamless OS but quick switching between iPadOS and MacOS is the way to go for the time being.

The main thing an iPad lacks that a Mac has is a proper terminal and IDEs in my opinion. Along with supporting more than one external Monitor (also one of the large reasons I don't use a MacBook). I want/need to navigate through most of my computer using the cli.

My desire for a MacOS LIKE system on the iPad PRO has been demising with every OS update but we still need a better file explorer. Finder id the only thing we really need on the iPad Pro

It drives me crazy that KZfaqrs all think that "Pro" has to mean "for video editing". There are MANY professional uses for iPad and 99% of them are NOT editing videos.

basically only graphic design. you can’t run code on an ipad, you can’t use record audio, record video on an ipad it’s apple’s chromebook.

I’ve always been of the mindset of dual boot! Let the user choose which OS is on their iPad! Also, apple has made MacOS appear touchable to the point that if they add in the coded features of the Apple Pencil to MacOS, it would easily be able to replace iPad os and keep all current functionality.

Honestly, while colour grading on iPad feels better than using mouse, the ditching of micro panel seems weird. It is objectively a better option for a pro colourist, since you can use two trackballs or dials at once which is incredibly useful for creating contrast and tone intuitively. Though for quick editing in absence of professional tools like panels, jog wheel or a trackball, I much prefer using iPad to using my laptop and trackpad - that's totally valid. It's awesome what you can do on set with it.

Waiting for logic and/or MainStage on iPad. I think the interface for MainStage is already quite well suited for a touch screen

I feel like it’d be nice if iPad could switch between a more traditional iPad interface and a Mac one in a similar vein to the Steamdeck’s desktop and gaming mode

As someone who uses a Surface Pro without a keyboard most of the time, it remains buggy to use full desktop software on a touchscreen (Though we've had hover over with scrubbing and tooltips for what, a decade) and so not for everyone, but still the iPad is apple's only touchscreen option and so not giving the option for full software is severely limiting. Additionally, I dock it and use it as my main computer saving money, licences, resources and even apple can appreciate not having to do the cloud sync dance. I see 2 options, the syplist isto make a mac 2in1, which is an ipad with macOS but it is clear is designed to be with keyboard first and formost but still gives powerusers all the options. Or the better option is to after an experimental feature toggle maybe somewhat merge macOS and ipadOS wih 2 kernal/system apis coexisting allowing at least the ability to switch between macOS and ipadOS but also have apps from one or the other also exist windowed in the other, think WSL and WSA. I find neither option very lightly.

Update, ignore this guy, the iPad definitely needs Mac OS or a version of Mac OS. A iPad that completely bridges the gap of a computer is perfect for a vast majority of people who would happily buy a iPad over a cheap windows computer
