STOP SWAYING OR SLIDING IN THE GOLF SWING

This video is about How to stop swaying in the golf swing. Many golfers can't stop swaying and sliding in their golf swings particular on their backswing causing a substantial drop in power and accuracy.
In this golf lesson Danny Maude reveals why despite many golf lessons golfers struggle to stop the sway and what they can go and practice today to remove it for good.
------------------
SUMMARY:
------------------
3 Key Points
1. The shape of the backswing is a spiral upwards not simply around or a transference of your weight the right and then to the left
2. Make practice deliberate on the range. Don't be in a rush to hit balls. Focus on the change you are trying to make in the swing and forget about the result of the shot in the short term.
3. Practice using mirrors at home so you can get used to the changes

ABOUT DANNY
-----------------------
Thanks for stopping by. I created this website as a resource just for you to support you on your golfing journey as I know how tricky learning this game can be…to say the least!
I personally found learning the game too long and difficult in the early days. I read all the books, watched all the videos but my game was not improving. Then after studying various forms of neuro science, motor learning, psychology and personal development in less than two years I went from struggling golfer to the final stage of the Open Championship.
On KZfaq and my personal website (www.dannymaude.com) I will bring you the most up to date training, training that is getting tangible results for my clients right now. I don’t know where you are in your golfing journey, you could be just starting out or maybe your body isn’t as flexible as it once was or you’ve got ambitions to slash your handicap. Wherever you are I’ve created a place here you can learn, share your ideas, ask questions and get all the support you need to enjoy this great game.
Be prepared though. If its a quick fix you are after Im not your man. Here I will give you step-by-step advice that you can take straight to the practice ground and apply to the course but it will require you to get stuck in, screw up…a lot, practice some more and then watch those scores tumble
I’ve had the pleasure of coaching thousands of students all around the world and if you are up for the challenge and are ready to get in the game…LETS GO TO WORK!

Really good drills, my only concern would be the danger of not completing weight transfer and starting a bit of a reverse pivot, whichis where my swaying came from.

Thank you for this important instruction Danny. So many of us have had the misconception of the weight transfer being a lateral shift back and then forward. Which, as you know, is totally false. I've struggled for years trying to stop swaying, and so many times I was under the false impression I stopped when actually a video of my swing showed I was still swaying. It was astonishing how difficult it was to stop and equally as astonishing the improvements in power and ball striking! Wonderful delivery of the instruction, thanks again.

Fantastic video, Danny!!! This is so simple to understand! As I mentioned in comments to some of your other videos, my biggest problem is how to transfer my weight to my lead side in the downswing/impact without sliding or swaying, and as you aptly demonstrated with stopping first at the top and then proceeding down and through, it all just happens naturally! Truly a gem of a video! Thanks again and please keep them coming!!!

Among the best instructional videos on the internet-many thanks. It seems when you demonstrate the spiral backswing you are slightly leaning left with a mini reverse pivot. How do you maintain the spine tilt to the right while you're performing the spiral? Also, please consider doing a video on the role of forearm rotation and wrist hinge in the swing- how much is correct and when does it occur? Many thanks!

It feels pretty amazing because my arms are so much more free. It feels weird at first because I think my back swing is way too steep, but the resulting downswing and striking feel so good.

Hi Danny, I had trouble with this and I used the mirror technique you mentioned for practice. What really helped was drawing a vertical line on the mirror in black felt tip and then placing my right hip on the line at set up. You can instantly see if your hip goes outside the line on your backswing which equals a sway. I would forgive myself if my hip came INSIDE the line, but it shouldn’t move more than the width of a golf ball if it does at all. Make sure the wife is out before drawing on the mirror. Thanks for the great videos.

I’ve started to watch a lot of peoples swings. You can see the knees bend to move the hips. Lead knee bend trail leg straightening, a sort of butt move towards lead leg to start the downswing while reversing the knee bend, but more weight towards front side and really an increase in weight. I do have a more connected upper body though also. Kind of hogan esc. But nowhere as good. But I do tend to feel myself sway instead of turn sometimes when I try to increase the foot plant

Hi Danny thanks again. The sway video u did ( spiral PC ) whom I know well was again super. The ball under the right foot we did yrs ago another good one. However, my tendency certainly as I got older was to move the Top half ( bottom half quite stable) I copied this move way back from Howard Clarke...when I practiced/ played with him when he made Walker Cup & Then Ryder Cup as u may know. He was a powerful ball striker with a tendency to ‚ move around & up so to speak. I became a good iron player but not a good driver ( 3w was my driving club wood ) then a TMade brassie..and so on improving my driving a lot but my irons suffered as my body changed & Kalk in my shoulder caused me discomfort. Am pleased to say my injuries are away & that I do hope to play Senior Open at Royal Lytham Next yr...although I will be 65:) I hit still around 250 & a bit more depending on conditions. 7i is around 150 on a good strike but am not consistent as I would like & have tended to get stuck or have fear to start the swing because of mishitting...u understand causing some anxiety. I know it’s a long story but it may help u & others that the past present & future kick in...of course I work on my mind to allow me to play freely..I still score around the par zone in Austria...on a 6600yd course. I would really like to get my iron play sorted ...many thanks again Danny

Hi Danny I love watching your teaching on KZfaq.Excellent Presentation.Question: I have a problem as to when my back swing should be complete and my down swing should start, because this is where a lot of things can go wrong. I find that if I pause at the top of my the back swing for a second or two it triggers the start my down swing and the tranfer of my weight to my left side. What are your thoughts?
@DanielMaude

Surely there has to be some lateral movement with the lower body on the downswing (towards the target) otherwise we would be striking the ball exactly as it was at address. The arc of the swing needs to be moved sideways, bringing the lowest point of the arc just target side of the ball. The staircase thought works well in the backswing, but then has to be shifted for it to work throughout the rest of the swing.
@DanielMaude
@DanielMaude 7 жыл бұрын
barry nicholas, great comment Barry. There is a gentle shift towards the target but it's minimal. It only needs to move a couple of inches to have a ball turf strike. This training is for those that are swaying excessively. Too much lateral movement reduces rotation and hip clearance through impact. Hope this clarifies things

Danny - you've shown how to avoid a sway on the backswing, but how do you prevent swaying on the downswing? i.e. swaying forward? Thanks
@DanielMaude
@DanielMaude 2 жыл бұрын
See the swing as more up and down. So I think the downswing look to push upwards from the ground as sliders glide across the surface

Thanks Danny, great as always! Im swaying and my Pro recommended to me, to keep my weight left all the time, he's a Fan of that swing style, guess that's called "Stack& Tilt"? Sure that's a big discussion, what do you think about that?
@DanielMaude

Personally I’m not into methods as they suggest everyone is the same and thus we must all swing it this way. I think keeping centreded over the ball however is generally a good thing as it keeps things simple

I understand the absolute importance of no sway on the backswing...however all great players fire their hips towards the target on the downswing. Is this not a sway/slide? Or would you advise more of a circular pivot of the hips? btw ..excellent videos.

Cheers for the video content! Sorry for the intrusion, I would appreciate your initial thoughts. Have you researched - Paneevelyn Swinging Clubsman (just google it)? It is a good one of a kind guide for revealing an effortless golf swing technique without the headache. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my mate got amazing results with it.

Great video and a seriously major problem for me for the past 30+years.. I have the additional element of a buckling trail knee towards the top of the backswing, which is demoralising to say the least! Any tips for that? 😅

This may explain why I hit behind the ball. Seems instead of climbing up, I turn around and then lower my right shoulder in the down swing. Something to work on.

I’ve noticed lately that the bottom of my swing arc is erratic. Sometimes thin sometimes fat . I suspicion I’m swaying a little and I think it’s moving the bottom of my swing. Is this true? Thanks for the tips this game can get really frustrating at times.

Danny, do you use the same spiral technique with the driver and woods? Your video on driving straight stresses a rotational swing using the big muscles in the back and down swings. You don't cover reaching the top of the back swing with a flat left wrist.
@DanielMaude
@DanielMaude 7 жыл бұрын
Peter Esposito, yes you do. The difference is when you spiral back down with the woods the ball position is further forward more in line with the front foot so the clubhead hits the ball on the way up as the body spirals up into the finish.

Danny, in comparing this (which is excellent) with your other awesome video about setting up to the ball, it seems like they contrast in that one has your left shoulder high at address and the other is lower. I think it's almost more of a optical illusion and this probably confuses me most. Thoughts?
@DanielMaude
@DanielMaude 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. Having looked at the two videos I probably exaggerate the set up a little to illustrate the point in the How to address the ball video. If you feel your left shoulder may be a problem just experiment on the range with slightly different heights and see what happens. As pros the left shoulder will be lower at address when we play lower shots and higher if higher shots

Should the backswing spiral start with the feet / ankles and wind up or does the act of swinging the club up and back create the spiral or does it matter?
@DanielMaude
@DanielMaude 6 жыл бұрын
Great question Steve, it’s different for everyone but what gives my clients more success is when they sense their feet anchored to the ground and the pressure starts from the ground/feet.

Keep your back facing the target a little longer as you start the downswing...this can help the club drop on to a flatter plane

Thanks Danny - i will try that drill out. Can you explain when we uncoil our body during the start of the downswing, does the bottom part of our body stay still? Or we 'open' the bottom part of the body towards the target and then start the downswing? The reason i ask this is if i place a training stick under the ball and in line with the direction i want to hit towards i notice that after i make contact with the ball i immediately hit the stick. This is how i physically see that i have done an out to in swing. Hope you can give me some pointers or direct me to one of your videos to help cure this issue.

I feel like most golf is thought wrong. The lead side is more of the axis point for me anyways. I’ve started playing better golf after this. Most people try to play with the center of their bodies. I tend to play with my lead side as more of a post and the body more swinging around that point instead of the middle

Danny. What about the sway forward on the down swing
@DanielMaude
@DanielMaude 4 жыл бұрын
there isn't a sway forward on the downswing, when you see the pros move forward its more of a squatting of the body that moves the body towards the target. Imagine tossing a ball towards the target, you don't slide towards it but instead increase the downward pressure of the feet into the ground and naturally rotate

@dannymaude if I keep my weight on the inside if my back foot on my backswing, is that a good way to tell myself I am not swaying? What if my weight feels flat on my backswing? - its because I tend to raise my front heel on my backswing. Thanks in advance.

Danny, nice video as always. I have a question. My lower body does not sway, but my head moves back a fair bit in my swing. I do get it back to close to where it was at address at impact, but still tend to hit fat shots. Do you think the head movement has anything to do with the fat shots? Btw, I have tried everything to stop the head from moving too much, but it keeps on happening. As soon as. I start the move back my head goes with the club seemingly.
