Rub the shrink opening on your jeans vigorously. The friction will open it.

Iam 82 years old and I remember that it was stated to remove the plastic wrap because it could warp the record after opening because of the type of plastic used in the wrap.I use the larger plastic sleeves that you can buy from ebay or others

Yes that's why many of the more premium labels ship their Lps in loose baggies (with tear away strips) instead of vacuum sealed shrink. Warped vinyl is a massive issue these days, tight shrinks are likely contributing to a degree.

@@Matasky2010 They are shrink-wrapped not vacuum sealed and that is why you should remove wrap and replace it with plastic sleeves.

I remove the shrink but keep any stickers as a lot are gatefold and I want to open them.

I do the opposite. I use a very sharp razor blade to start the split and go all the way to bottom for a super clean opening. Patience is key.

I run it over my shirt till I get a start so to speak. Then do as you suggest. Unless it is a gatefold, I take the shrink off and place the hypes inside and put the LP in between the 2 covers for storage. Then I place the jacket in an outer sleeve.

Remove the shrink! You are supposed to enjoy the sleeve without the ugly sticker. Keep the sticker in the sleeve if it’s important to you.

No shrink wrap for me. I keep the sticker and put it inside the cover. Put the cover in the nice outer sleeve and record behind. Looks better.

Long before I started collecting records, I have been a long term book collector. I have learnt that keeping paper products in plastic shrink wrap is a very bad idea. It is highly destructive long term. Albums should be placed in products with archival properties. I personally use Vinyl Storage Solutions but there are many others out there.

Consider rubbing the spine on your Levi's. Friction is like magic. weakens the seam and it just opens. Plus you get a little exercise.

I rub the edge of the record against my jeans and the friction eventually melts the shrikwrap.

I've made this comment in videos of mine. I don't get it! I have a razor blade sitting on my desk to help open cartons, and then I just use it to slit the shrink.

i try to always keep the shrink, and use my thumb nail to open it. but a knife to open the mailing box lol

I learned the method of rubbing it on the leg of my jeans in the 80’s, but I always threw away the shrink.

Makes no sense dude. Using a pen knife to slice the opening cleanly from top to bottom leaves the shrink wrap perfectly intact. It would on any day be better than a credit card with a blunt edge. I dont know what kind of knife you have

I’ve heard of old PVC sleeves causing a pvc haze on the vinyl. Don’t believe shrink wrap could do the same. Happy to hear a definitive comment on this because I’m working mainly from hearsay. Although I have two records I bought new in the 1970’s and stored in plastic sleeves that did just this. The records still play fine but not ideal when you think you’ve looked after them.
