During Corona basically all the information considering my exams and every important event, I can only get through a whatsapp group chat with all the other students. For the past few months I've been trying to use Signal more and more instead of WhatsApp, but it's pretty tough. All of the more "official" groups (like my uni's group) use WhatsApp and they don't want to try moving away from it at all. I understand them tbh, I've been trying to make all my meme groups my friends use Signal instead, without too much success. I've come to the scientific conclusion that most people are brainless wastes of oxygen and don't care about privacy. More so, they get aggressive about it and try to convince people I talk to not to make the switch.

Here is what I did: I've uninstalled that crap and switched to Signal. Then I told everyone (when they asked me, why I don't respond to WhatsApp-Messages anymore) that I switched to an alternative and if hey want to reach me, they'd have to install Signal, too. I haven't told them to 'stop using WhatsApp', I've just said that I won't use it anymore. A completely different approach. Some said 'fuck you', most said okay. It's much easier too get others to install another app instead of telling them to stop using one. The most common response I've got after they've installed Signal was: "wow, so many of my Co-workers use that too?!" Some wanted to know my reason behind this decision, so I explained it to them (but only if they asked. Don't be too forward and force your opinion on others).

We all should support Tox chat. It needs more users and devs.

I'm with you on this one, but some of the excuses you mention at the end are actually valid and your reasoning for disregarding them doesn't make much sense. You're not going to stop being friends with somebody because they refuse to stop using a messaging app, just like you're not going to give up on your job because they force you to use a messaging app (if that happens at all, anyway). Where I live, literally everyone uses Facebook Messenger and/or Instagram for communicating; the former is essentially the default messaging app. Yet, privacy-wise, Messenger is even more garbage than WhatsApp. I personally use Signal, but only a small fraction of my friends also use it. For this reason, I have a virtual machine running on my phone, which specifically is there to run Facebook Messenger. This way, that app is contained within its own little box. It's only going to have access to information I willingly give it, which is obviously anything that I talk about with literally anyone on that app. It's not a perfect solution, since I still don't get message notifications if the VM isn't running, but it's still better than nothing.

The thing is that is next to impossible to convince my friends to all move over to Signal, this is a case of easier said than done lol. A few did moved over and started to use Telegram and Signal though.

Signal does have stickers, actually. There aren't as many sticker packs and only official ones are shown, but AFAIK they can be installed somehow. For example, there's a cat, dog and creepy hand sticker pack available.

i genuinely hate whatsapp and i hate how popular it is in europe. i could easily move to signal with all my friends who actually know about tech and give a shit about their privacy but i need to talk to my school classmates who are "normies" (i rlly dont like to use that word) and the simple notion that an app's processes can be monitored by looking at the code isnt worth much. its awful. i kid you not it feels like every few days they have a new privacy policy you have to agree to.
