Yeah I used to really advocate for online privacy in college and I was a little afraid of being called crazy or delusional or some other such thing. But almost no one said that. The most common response was that they were aware of companies and governments spying on them but didn't care. Some even said some nonsense like. "I have nothing to hide so I have nothing to worry about." Oh well, at least we have Linux and other free software so why care what the normies are doing. They have every right to give up their rights.

One of the most significant experiences during that time was upgrading the computer of the a blind user who has been working there for years to Windows 10. This was the most accurate description of Windows Vista I have the pleasure to listen to EVER! I started out with Windows ME in 2001 and switched to XP a year later. Some experiments in virtual machines and live rescue cd with Knoppix later, I wanted switch to Linux. Then I got a laptop with Vista. Now, I didn't just wanted to switch, i was sure to. 2008 I made the decision to switch from XP to Ubuntu on my main machine. In the early days it was even hard to get audio working in KZfaq. Later I had to install a dual boot W7, to be able to play specific games with friends. Bummer. 2021, yes, 13y later I switched from Ubuntu to Manjaro and landed on Qtile a few days ago. What a rollercoaster. At this point, I am using Linux longer than Windows and I am proud about this!

I've got to see the UI changes in Windows too, starting from Windows 98 up to 10, with some exceptions. Can say, it's pretty much like Kenny's journey, and a big reason why when I use Windows 10, I hate myself. When my lapptp fan cocked up on a decade-old machine I was still using, I was pleasantly surprised when after some configuration, my Manjaro installation worked on another machine. Sure I had to use legacy boot and make the board not use SecureBoot but so long I can use the bootloader, so long the system and home UUIDs exist, GRUB works like a champ. And when it doesn't I just need to punch in a few commands to make it so. The robustness of free software with some brain power and research from an end-user is amazing in an era where Microsoft Windows needs third-party tools to function as a system-on-a-stick and Apple makes it hard as humanly possible to let average users run OS X in a VM. The only thing which sucks is when I was trying to play Valheim on my open-source OS, Vulkan and OpenCL both work like ass. In a twist of irony Vulkan on my current Windows system runs that particular game faster than Vulkan in Manjaro with the various AMD Vulkan packages installed, but I am also just getting my feet wet with Vulkan on Linux so it could be a configuration issue from what _to me_ is a non-obvious user error.
@liesdamnlies3372

To the last point, at least there's good news in that progress is being made and remarkably so in the last few years. Proton is pretty great at what it does _most_ of the time now (with caveats), and Vulkan too is making leaps. The impetus to make these things actually work well seems to be building (with some exceptional cases where a game can out-perform its Windows counterpart).

While I really agree that we should all start using free software as much as we can, there are a lot of programs that are still decades, if not centuries, away from being decent alternatives... Gimp is ultra painful to use, also if you're into game development like myself and you use Unreal Engine, it just doesn't work at all in linux (at least last time I tried it took multiple hours to copy the git repo, build from source and then just see it crash whenever I wanted to create a new blank project)

Here is my conundrum The big problem with open source software as a programmer is how do you get paid. Programming is time consuming and labour intensive. If I have a job outside of programming I have a lot less time to program. If I spend my time programming and don't get paid I am poor. I can only perform to a certain level if I am an amateur programmer. I do open source stuff I write, and I use other peoples open source code from time to time.

This problem exists mostly because the vast majority of users don't use FOSS. If 100,000 people use a program and 5% of then donate a dollar to the devs, that's only 5k, but if 10,000,000 people used it then it's 500k. User base makes all the difference, so spread the word as much as can and be the difference maker so that hopefully in the future you and other devs can make a living in a fair way without having to give in to corporate demands.

closed source OSs tend to be more demanding on older hardware as well to phase them out (main reason why windows vista had an awful performance on single core computers without an SSD, windows 8 on desktops (im sure MS tried to phase out them in favor of touchscreen laptops/tablets) and windows 10 on anything that has 8gb of ram or less).

Completely agree that the needlessly changing ui was one of the most anoying things. I had to use win10 for a few months the even small things like "My computer" being renamed to "This computer" annoyed me. I hated so much this new changed interface that i did not bother to even try learning it. If i wanted to go to control panel i hit win+r and typed "control panel" or "c:" to go to c drive just because i didn't want to find where they moved it. To this day i have no clue why did they add that new settings window. After this expierience to told to myself that when the time comes that i will be forced to abandon win7 i will avoid windows at any cost.

I'd make the full switch to Linux if more developers were willing to switch over. I have modding tools and programs that work better on windows than on Linux. And not only that, but a lot of anticheat games that I play only work on windows, which really sucks. And using a VM with a GPU passthrough is honestly a major pain in the ass just to play those games, so I find myself using windows 98% of the time. Dual booting does exist, and I do that, but it's still kinda a pain to switch back and forth just to do one thing then switch over when I have to do the other 98% that I already do on windows. Like I said, if more devs move over to Linux, or hell, if actual industries try to make more of a focus on Linux, the userbase would be massive.

@Mental Outlaw I have questions!! Hey sir, what about video games?? Can games be proprietary? Or that isn't be considered software at all? Also not to offense, but has the ridiculous modern popularity of games? Has hurted Linux jumpin'? I know that Wine and friends had helped and stuff, but they still cry about their favorite anti-cheat meta games... not to feel like a boomer, but I ain't a big fan of these MMO's! Honestly also, my love-hate relationship with Windows has been basically the same, it all went downhill after 7... even though I almost completely left it alone, I still like the fact that Windows is somehow a non-Unix-like OS! Man, how great would be if the Windows family became open/free software, we could learn more about it, we could finally have real choices and help Apple fall, lol. Nowdays I use Linux Mint as my daily driver and Lubuntu on my old potato which my parents learnt about ;) Technically I still dual boot Windows in my main computer, but it's just like you said! For doing this particular niche task, although I'm also a multiplatform developer and Wine tester, so yeah! (Doing other tasks or even casually gaming, I still spend all my days with my Minty love xD) Lastly, I'm also convincing most of my friends who hate Windows 10, since their complaints I've heard like... complained about how Microsoft resetted his settings and called his PC slow crap... I have been asking them about their daily routine and what games they like so I can help them still have fun while being safer and comfier! I hope you mind reading this silly text and... what do you think about me :)?

6:15 Semi true. Especially open-source software developers that develop in their free time have a certain idea how their project is supposed to be. So unless your ideas overlap, no one's gonna do your bounty and also merge it to upstream. Especially not if it's something UI related. Unless of course it's an optional UI element for example like in RetroArch where there are different modules. If you want something to be done in a software project, you usually do it yourself and contribute the change, that's the easiest way I've found to make my voice heard.

If anything this is a problem of philosophy, whether someone believes in the revolution against the establishment or not. I got my taste of the revolution and it's pretty bitter. To solve that, you actually need a breed of person who you don't see a lot of in the FOSS community, and that's UX designers. Yes, the artsy-fartsy types, but they're needed for making software that's usable by _humans._ Two projects that come to mind that seem to have had this realization and are getting it under control are elementaryOS and KDE. It's also a (good, imo) reason people will want to stick to Apple products. Apple has had style guidelines/rules for many, many years now, and created an environment where following those guides for human interface is actually pretty easy for any developer. Standardization in that respect was a very good thing; another thing elementaryOS is aiming for and seems to be pulling-off alright, without the spookiness. (KDE...I love you, but your default apps are seriously ugly ducklings.) Great software doesn't need tutorials.

To me, it seems to depend on how much you know and use the proprietary equivalents. A lot of people say "Use GIMP instead of Photoshop", yeah, I use GIMP instead of Photoshop, a lot of other people can and do, but it's not really capable of doing all the things Photoshop can do. It does everything I've ever done in Photoshop, but I'm sure it has a million other features that some people can't live without. FOSS video editors are a complete joke, so no real competition with Premiere. I've heard Natron is good, but is it actually a viable replacement for After Effects? I don't know personally, I've barely used AE or Natron, but I can at least say they operate very differently, so even if their capabilities are similar enough, if you already have a ton of AE experience, basically none will transfer over, which would be really annoying.

Steam works on Linux but will only run native games (which aren't many). You can enable proton compatibility later and 99% of non-native games will work. However, games with kernel-mode anticheats that only work on windows kernel and detect VM bypasses will NOT work. This mainly applies to EAC and Battleye. Some notable titles that don't work because of said kernel dependencies are: VALORANT, Rust, Escape From Tarkov, and Rainbow Six Siege. While EAC and battleye DO work on Linux, individual game developers have to request support for it. VALORANT and R6 will likely never work on Linux. Rust and Escape From Tarkov developers have announced their games will work, but once the specific anti cheat modules have been ported over. Personally I've given up all of them and mainly play CSGO (which works fine because it doesn't have kernel-mode AC). I just really don't like the idea of running a kernel rootkit just to play an FPS game. It has a myriad of privacy and security consequences.

I had to give up my unraid VM system a while ago just so I could keep playing Tarkov in my spare time. And I don't want to acclimate back to something like proton until it really comes into it's own. Ah yes the argument that there is an alternative for everything closed source program out their. I use Linux on my main pc but for a lot of things I use windows because I haven't found an great alternative, I had to make a compromise every time, and it was just not worth it.

Adobe suite is the sole reason I still dual boot Windows. No alternatives are as fluid and as “everything-works-with-everything”. I’m not a professional, but those also have the problem of industry standards. LTT made a great video about that; they tried switching away from Adobe, but it’s just not feasible when you work in groups and everyone in the industry uses a specific tool. Edit: typo

I wholeheartedly agree with all that is said here. This year effectively, partially due to necessity, I've had to shift to FOSS alternatives and it was a surprisingly smooth ride. But simply stating "X is bad because of Y" would not convince me 12 months back, and in my opinion it comes down to why we use software in the first place: because it's easy and effective, and change is not easy, and not always effective. People busy with trying to be a teacher, architect, engineer or anyone who is not into software, is not typically going to bother thinking about this stuff unless they absolutely have to. Just like we don't think about good teaching techniques, architectural design, or how our sewer systems work on a daily basis, so too will the average person not think about the software they use. I mean FFS people are already getting burned out like crazy nowadays and you want them to go and switch to a new OS? seriously? Preaching isn't going to help, and saying that the status quo is bad won't either in this situation. What you need is to attract people by showing them how much better it is with FOSS. Show them r/unixporn or other similar things, show them that FOSS is not merely an acceptable alternative, but in fact an upgrade and honest improvement. Show them that wine isn't just able to run almost every game around, but that it can run at the click of a button, and that it in fact has better compatibility options for older software than windows does. Show them that you can in fact realize your childhood dream and have 2 keyboards plugged in at the same time and do god-knows-what with that. Show them that computers are still the amazing technology that was promised to us in the 90's, just that you won't find that down the mainstream avenues.

I would love to switch away from Windows but so far in my experience installing anything on linux is a massive pain and half the time the programs don't even work

The only issue I’ve ever had was virtual box and that’s because headers go fucking haywire every time there’s a kernel update

I can't really get off of windows currently because my use case is hardcore gaming and linux gaming is just not where it should be. I will get the Steam Deck though and will have my first proper Linux experience with SteamOS and since it is okay if not all games work on my handheld, I probably won't put windows on that.

The day Adobe releases a linux-version of their CreativeCloud is the day Windows will start to die. Doesn't even have to be FOSS. Just a pre-built binary would do.

Yes it’s the only software which keeps Windows alive. Also some boomer excel VBA spreadsheets.
