When my car was still under warranty the dealership service advisor said since you are getting the brakes done you might as well change the something something filter. I said what filter? And he explained in greater detail and then I realized he was talking about the cabin air filter. I said to him why didn’t you just say cabin air filter. I said that already changed that myself and it took me 10 mins. They were going to charge me $150. Crazy. It cost me $35, the price is the filter.

I am from Europe and BMW parts, aftermakert, not OEM are at the same price as any other parts. Quite affordable. So as long as you don't go for dealership and OEM stuff, your BMW cost as much as a Toyota in maintenance. Heck, toyota and lexus are actually quite pricy to maintain around here. Just like Ford or Chevy, lol. All the US and JP imports. Cheers!

One key way to save on parts is to always order them from the East Coast dealership. They are usually 40% cheaper than those on the West Coast. Also, when you do need an alignment check out places that offer lifetime alignment for $179.00. This way you can get it done every 6-12 months as BMW usually will charge that for one alignment.

Yeah but for most intricate issues the particular scan tools the dealerships use could cost thousands of dollars. Most general scanning tool will not pick up a model's specific coding, especially on a German car of a late model. There are close to a thousand processors on the car regulating specific functions. Access to all of them is accessed by BMW's specific tools. Your local repair guy will not have that tool, and will not have expertise on the latest 3 series that the dealerships train their mechanics in year before a model comes out. In the end you're either going to a BMW specializing mechanic which work with local dealers anyway, or go to the dealer. These cars are extremely complex with very specific coding that BMW trains their mechanics in. This is how they stay in business. This is why mechanics do not buy new German cars. They're simply unfixable due to lack of software knowledge for at least several years from the date a specific model is out.
@donkedic1

And that’s why smart *everyday* people don’t buy German cars. They’re money pits. Even if I was rich, I’d still stay away from anything German.

I'm happy and glad I know how to work on my own cars, took my 2013 x6m to the dealer for an inspection they recommended to change my lower control arms on both sides! At about 600$ each plus an alignment 3 hrs of work wanted 2k+ stating there was a small knock or they are worn or loose. Of course I refused the work and looked at the bushings and they are not cracked or worn, the knocking sound was coming from a worn out sway bar link 50$ off rock auto and I have 2 new sway bar links and the knocking was gone. Oh and they wanted close to 120 or 130 for 1 sway bar....

Cabin air filter is $20 on Amazon, literally fitted in 2 minutes. BMW dealership - $60 So take my Mercedes c class main dealer for a service, he calls to say that the brake pads need changing. I say ‘don’t bother, I’m selling it soon and I’ll wait for the warning light’. 12 months later, still have the car, took it for a service at another main dealer, I ask them to check the brakes, they say ‘they’re fine’ People need to realise that knowing basic car maintenance will save them thousands of dollars, changing oil will more regularly will double the life expectancy of a car, that’s got to be a good thing. Great video, ECPP 👍🏽

Excellent video. I started to take a lot of interest in cars about two years ago when I was 16, and became very aware about maintenance. About a year ago, the VW dealer was going to charge me $1200 to fix a minor oil leak on my ‘09 Jetta. Long story short, I kept the oil leak and use a Lucas oil leak sealer product. Saved so much money.

Love this & your other vids. I will only add it might be advisable to at least back the spark plugs out and then back in so they don't seize in aluminum heads that are common in cars nowadays. I've seen people leave plugs in beyond 100k mi & when they finally needed to get them out the threads in the head came with the plug.

In reference to dealer 'up sells', this is real. I have a step son who is & has been for years a service writer at car dealerships. Service writers in a lot of places get paid at least partially on commission. Management sets goals for the writers & runs "campaigns" where a service item is picked & then the writers have to sell those items for whatever the period is (month, quarter, etc). It might be windshield wipers, brake or coolant system flushes, spark plugs, whatever. If the writers don't upsell enough to meet whatever quota/goal is set then they don't get paid as much or worse, if they don't meet upsell goals enough times they could be let go.

Reached the limit of my DIY skills. 2012, 128i, N52. Did a water pump and thermostat at 10-year interval. All of the KZfaq vids all assume you have a high skill set if you are going this deep. The critical step is the top side blind screw on the water pump that needs to removed AND reinstalled. I did find a good vid (Nathan) for pulling the frame stiffeners for convertibles bodies. Removing the seal from the neck of the transmission filter up in the body of the tranny was tons easier. Got a nice BMW specific scanner from Turner.

Thanks, enjoyed that. I have an ongoing BMW warranty on my 04 760. It's a UK deal that has no limit other than keep paying for. I have saved up a number of faults that should be covered. For example the steering angle sensor failes sometimes etc. The problem I have is all these faults are intermittent and can dissappear for a month or more before returning. However I can see history codes for the issues on my scan tool (launch). Do you have any advice on how to present these faults to the dealership. I do not want them to say the issue doesn't exist because they cannot replicate it? . I have photographs on the dash errors and from my scan tool.. Maybe a video idea as intermittent issues plague exotic cars...

I have been proactive with the maintenance myself by ordering the parts on my own and doing it myself or take it to my mechanic for an affordable labour fee. Do you see any point in changing the differential oil for both the front and rear? Also what about the coolant? I don't believe the coolant was ever touched in this car, nor did it give me any issues so far. As you said in the video, should I change the coolant once there is a problem? Thanks.
@markkauffman6184
@markkauffman6184 2 жыл бұрын
I would say definitely replace the coolant, it is now eight years old. The anticorrosion properties don’t last forever. As for the differential oil, I would do that as well just for peace of mind as it is not that expensive to do it yourself.

You recomend buying a cheap scan tool but I wonder if you would save more money buying an expensive one that would no doubt detect more faults? The idea of putting big money into tooling instead of paying the same for labour appeals to me as I intend to keep my car along time.

the OBDii scanners will not, check everything, it may give you somethings but not everything, you need inpa or ista, better still take it into a indy for a scan which will give you a full break down for around 40 bucks

I have a 15 mini cooper s 4 door, I went to dealer for warranty work to replace the radiator. They wanted to say that my battery was bad and that it could affect the job, and quoted me 500 dollars. Tried arguing that they had all the special equipment that my multimeter and obd scanner couldn't read. Never ever going back to the dealer

Hi, thanks again for watching, it is much appreciated. Fortunately the car you are looking at has the improved N55 engine and has addressed so e of the issues with the early turbo model in the n54. Generally that engine has been quite durable, but being direct injected I would be curious on carbon buildup and injectors and high pressure pump and whether they have been addressed or not, although that’s not a show stopper if it’s a well maintained car otherwise. Cooling system woes can be something to watch for and higher mileage cars can have issues with leaks so I would buy a lower mileage car or have a close inspection for leaks. Service history is important for these cars as neglect or abuse can ruin an otherwise great car.

@@Luminary2024 The warranty is questionable. If its aftermarket, it's a farce. Lots of legal terminology to reduce your coverage. You will need some with contractual knowledge to sift it first otherwise it's a money trap as well as you might only get up to 50% of your repair bill. The most important point is never trust a dealer they are out to get you. You are a walking money bag to them.

@louvendran7273

@@Luminary2024 Definitely, again the contract must be between you and BMW. I'm not sure about their legal name. Moreover, a standard BMW Motorplan is 5yrs or 100 000km of whichever comes first thereafter you can extend to 180 000km or 7 years whichever comes first. Their cover only excludes top up oil, tyres and fuel. Any variation from this implies that it is not BMW cover but aftermarket. Also bear in mind as Mark discussed, you should do your own oil changes every say 9000km yourself as they will do theirs every 25 000km which is not good for the longevity of the engine. Good luck with your purchase.

Anthony Molina Indeed, even Pentosin Engine Oil is very good grear heat resistance the only problem might be that your MPG would decrease between 2% and 4% compared to Castrol Edge but you won't have to refill in a 7,000 mile OCI.

Another B.S thing that has a "certain mileage interval" for changing is brake fluid. I've had 9 cars including 2 BMW's and I've never changed brake fluid. My last bmw F10 kept reminding me on the iDrive it needed replacing, the brakes were fine. Just a money grab for the dealer.

Rob Hughes Don't quit your day job buddy. As a racer or a technical reviewer you are not going to convince anyone that your car will be tip-top braking for 15 or 20 years on original fluid. Not gonna happen. I never said that its a regular service item. I said it depends on the car. I have not driven every used car out there. But I suggest you ask real drivers who drive cars hard what they think.
