In this video, I install the back panel/boards for a shelf I built a while back. Check out that build, here: • BUILD YOUR SKILLS! Sma...
Anyway, for that bookcase, I didn't put a back on it, and now the books keep falling out. I thought it looked cool without a back, and I was trying to use only a single 1"x12"x8' board. Anyway, I decided to fix the issue, and so I rabbet in a back panel. Since I bought boards off the shelf, all told, the project took about 1 hour, 40 minutes total work. From when I took it out of my son's room and put it out, it was just over 12 hours.
I think in this video you'll find some interesting ideas and tips, for example, like how I use a utility knife to cut the pine.
Anyway, hope you like it!

Your shop setup is going to make me sacrifice a spare bedroom sooner than later. Just have to find another place for a treadmill. Separating hand tool from power tool would be both weird and fantastic. Kind of a mood thing sometimes.

Ha! Well whatever works! I do enjoy enjoy the hand tool experience though. Is there any way you can move some of the larger tools aside when you want a more hand tool setup? I have my power mitre saw put away most of the time, and I my bandsaw is on wheels, unplugged. I just keep them out of the way to use occasionally.

@@TheHandToolery They are. Hand tools in the corner near the bench. It’s more about the garage versus spare bedroom and climate control. Going to the garage is sort of an island that leads to many side things like cleaning.

Where do you live? Is it humid? I’m always wondering how to know how much gap to include in projects for expansion contraction?
@TheHandToolery
@TheHandToolery Жыл бұрын
I’m in Virginia, and it’s humid. But since I got this from lowes, where the doors are always open more or less, I imagine there is humidity to lose. Also, we have central air/heating, so the humidity in the house doesn’t change much. Lastly, I used nails, so they have some give to them. I think there are actual formulas for expansion, but I eyeballed this. If it destroys itself, I’ll make another :)

@@TheHandToolery I’m in NC in the mountains north of Boone so I appreciate the info. We moved from Texas so climates are way different since where we are now is almost a rain forest sometimes.

Will wood expansion across the back be a problem?

I left a gap on both sides. The nails will allow enough movement, I hope!
