just a thought, what if you placed your stop block on top of a 1/4" spacer, clamped your block in place and then removed the spacer. The wood dust from the cutter will not prevent the work piece from making full contact with the stop block.

I don’t have a lot of experience with the router so I’m a little confused as to why you don’t just feed in to the stop block instead of doing that plunge cut.

One thing to keep in mind is direction of feeding the stock. Right to left on router table. Left to right is called a climb cut and the router bit can pull the piece out of your fingers...or even take your fingers in to the bit.

I would not call myself a woodworker, but I enjoy the content of these videos and may try to build something more complicated than the things I have made with simple tools. I may be showing my ignorance here, but why can't you make both of the grooves from one side?

Because they are not identical. They are a mirror image of each other. It's the same reason you need a right and left glove.🙂🙂

@@glencrandall7051 So if I understand, If you didn't change it the X axis, you would have to change it in the Z axis which would be a whole new can of worms.

I prefer to just use stop blocks.

The template is just to help with set up. For a one time project I wouldn't bother either. Most of my projects are one of a kind. I sometimes make templates and rarely ever use them again. But, for beginners it helps to visualize and learn.
