I hope you will enjoy this short poem by Robert Frost. This is really more of a soundscape than a video, but there are some beautiful winter photographs to see.

This is a poem we can all relate to in this hectic world. Frost enjoys a rare moment of serenity before he continues with his daily trek, which will not end soon. How many times have you stopped your trek just to look into Central park or Forest Park or some other urban setting just to watch the snow fall and listen to the dampened sounds of the city? After a moment, you realize that it is getting late and you have an appointment to keep. You take in a deep breath of cold city air and move on while pondering the last few quiet moments where your mind rested.

To me this poem is more about duty. I wouldn't say I'm suicidal, but at 21 years old I'm already tired of life. I'd just like to rest my head down and close my eyes forever. But I can't. Because setting aside all the cool shit I wouldn't get tonsee if that were the case, I would be dissatisfied with myself. I still have done very little to make the people around me better, I have many interesting things about myself to sort through and just in general, I'd be wasting so much if I just alt+f4'd my existence. Yeah it's tiring. Yeah it sucks many times. Yeah I often doubt that I can make it or if it is even worth. And too often it never is. But so what? If there's anything on the other side, I got an eternity to explore it. I've yet to be satisfied with life in this world, so why would I want to give it up? This is why this poem speaks to me so deeply.

I think there are (at least) two different and seemingly opposing takes on this poem. On the one hand, it can be read as a story of lost resonance. It is a story of a person who sees the beauty, but who has too many duties to build a deeper connection to the world surrounding him. They are a driven person who cannot rest. On the other hand, it can be read as a story of a person being in control of themself of knowing when to work and when to rest, of following their principles, of knowing their place in the world. A story of the perfect stoic. In my eyes, these two takes aren't actually opposed. They tell the same story. Stoicism isn't an everyday philosophy, it is a philosophy of crisis. But the approach of stoicism is an instrumental one. It is a philosophy of staying on track on a narrow mountain trail, so to speak. It is only useful in situations where the world around you falls appart and it might seem useful in situations where the world around you seems to fall appart, but it actually only seems to fall appart BECAUSE you are losing the connection to it. And in this situation, stoicism is absolutley the wrong solution. The trail isn't narrow, you just refuse to take a look to the left or right. To build lasting connections to the world around you, you need time, you need trust, you need hope and you need an open mind. The person in the poem has lost all of this by disciplining themself to follow what they think of as their duties. So, in my eyes, this is a poem about a society that only survives by constant change, by always confronting the presence with a crisis for the sake of getting to sleep in some abstract future. It is not about living a vibrant, active life of connecting with people and with the world, but of a life that consists of work and sleep. And that is lead by a person who thinks of following this way of life as a moral ideal, a duty.

What's interesting about the best poems, is that I'm not sure Robert Frost would be able to precisely communicate in his own words more meaning than the poem itself does. I think that's the virtue of poetry. This communicates an aspect of the human condition in a way which couldn't be done as effectively explained in a straightforward manner

My tastes have evolved with age, too. In my youth, I was probably rather like Chevy Chase in one of his movies. Chase takes his family to see the Grand Canyon, but is in a vast rush to move on to do something else. He stands by the edge, bobs his head a couple of times and says, "Welp, now we've seen it, let's go!" Now, reading this poem, I linger to savor it. Thanks for stopping by, George.

I am no scholar of poetry, but I read alot of Frost when I was in college and it helped me deal with leaving my home in the woods and dealing with civilization. To me, Frost reflected my true background in the woods, and with this poem I felt reminiscent to many late nights I descended into the woods on a full moon, to explore its depths. I take Frost at his literal word, and to that I take comfort. For he speaks of the simple country realm, and to that I hold dear.

I'M 47 and I never TRIED to memorize this but it just happened. Memorizing is differrent from learning . Not ALL things should be memorized. But finding things that are valuable to you and committing them is like making a deposit in your heart. It may seem insignifigant at the time, but withdrawal time WILL come and it is then that you will realize how rich your soul is. Good luck young ones.

"Memorizing is differrent from learning ". No, it's not. Learning is literally the act of retaining new information. It's bizarre to to me that some people think learning doesn't involve the acquisition and memorisation of information. I mean, how could someone possibly learn to read without memorising the alphabet? How could someone possibly learn to fly a plane if they couldn't remember anything the instructor told them?

There are many ways to present this wonderful poem, Reinin. You might like to hear the author's own reading. You can find it here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nsx_q8eLy9WUl6c.html HIs presentation is subtle. You will find all of the emotion of the poem in his voice, but it's muted, as if he is adding a layer of meaning which says that yes, he's talking about his death, but it's no big deal. Nothing to be alarmed about. I succumbed to the temptation to be more expressive with the poem, to put a little more energy into it, to dress it up a little with mild sound effects. Such gimmicks aren't necessary to the poem. It's glorious all by itself.
@Reinindiereuse

Thank you for linking this, didn't know it yet. I have sometimes found the readings of the authors themself a bit dissapointing, but this is truly a genius recitation. As you say, it's very subtle and conveys a kind of pragmatism about death. Will not be the last time i will listen to it.

We don't always have to know what the poet was saying to enjoy something. It is what the poem speaks to me that gives it value. That it can say many different things to different people is part of the genius of it. Frost did that with his poems. Personally, I am grateful.

I found a recording of it, and I'm listening to it as I write. That's a wonderful thing he's created. Thanks for the pointer!

I've heard quite a few people reciting this on KZfaq - this one is the best, by far. Added to favorites, even.

I love the "flavor" i shall call it, that your voice puts into the poem, it completes the poem and the pictures are wonderful.

Especially amazing to a lass embroiled in an Australian summer, I would suppose! I'm glad you found it relaxing and peaceful; that was my primary design goal for the video. May you find peace this holiday season, Naomi, and a warm Merry Christmas to you. *Hugs*
