Hi there! 👋🏻 We live on a 1-acre farm right in the middle of the busy city of Phoenix, Arizona! Our names are Kevin & DaNelle, and we moved here in 2009, when our kids Ethan & Lydia were just 6 & 4 years old 🥰 Over the years we've raised goats for milk, chickens for eggs, built a fish/swim pond, planted fruit & nut trees, and grew a large garden full of veggies. We've also raised a bunch of other animals like pigs, sheep, turkeys, geese, peacocks, and more!
Now that our kids are away at college, we have settled into doing what we love most -- which is raising & breeding goats ethically to improve genetics. But don't worry, we'll forever love our goofy pet goats like Luna the herd queen & Willow the stump lover. We also still love raising chickens for eggs, gardening, tending to the fruit & nut trees, and growing fish in the pond. We use the fresh goat's milk to make cheese, butter, yogurt -- and we use that + everything else we harvest on our little farm to make delicious meals. Having a getaway from the busy world right in our backyard brings so much joy to us each day, and we hope it brings some to you, too. 🥰

Speaking as someone who grew up on the Lake of the Ozarks, catfish get huge. Most freshwater fish get much bigger than you'd think.

When it comes to catfish, the smaller ones are actually the better tasting ones. Anything from 12-16 inches is the sweet spot. They taste much better and don't get that "muddy/fishy" flavor like the older/bigger catfish.

Maybe that's because they are raised in areas that are muddy. I seem to remember that a pond liner was used for the construction of this pond. Hopefully, that will help prevent any muddy flavor in their catfish.

A motley cat or flathead is the only one that’s good no matter how big it is.

Really big freshwater fish in general tend to be more oily, I've found. Of course, it varies for each species, but I think there's a scientific explanation out there. Although I don't know what it is, I'd love to find out!

Tip: If you ever have overcooked or unneeded hotdogs, use them as bait. My step uncle came to a fishing spot where we had caught 1 bluegill, 1 mud catfish, and 1 normal catfish in 3 days of fishing with wax worms and night crawlers, he caught 13 different, full size catfish in 4 hours with our burnt hotdog leftovers.

Catfish love chicken livers that have been left in the sun for three days, and most other fish won't touch them. As for raising them, most of the farm breeds only put on about 1lb per year/growing season. You can force an accelerated growth by keeping the water temp at 68 degrees Fahrenheit and feeding them a high protein food at least once a day in either the morning or dusk.

You can put Fern in a stall all by herself and see if there is less milk in the morning that means she is drinking her own milk. If there is a normal amount of milk in the morning then Tilly is drinking the milk.
