I'm an indie game dev working on the art and story side of a fighting game and one of the fundamentals I've learned is that all fighting games are really mult-verse stories. Every time you beat the game with a different character it's a branching timeline. The main storytelling tools in a fighting game outside of the canon are environmentl and worldbuilding. Needs a lot of pre prep time and an approach that favors economy.

Considering Virtua Fighter as a whole and Bloody Roar 4 (not the series, just this specific entry) are treated as punchlines, the fact that Soulcalibur didn't even cross their minds is a little depressing, especially since it's been about 4-5 years since the last one (if you count any DLC or updates).

I've always admired in Tekken 4 how nearly all the cast have good reasons for going into the tournament. Bryan needs to find a way to charge his power cell, or he'll die, Paul is out to prove that he won the Tekken 3 tournament but was robbed, Steve is on the run from the mafia for not throwing a boxing match.

Without a doubt my favorite story in fighting games is Soulcalibur, I absolutely love everything from edge/blade- the end of 3, 4 and 5 meander quite a lot, but I was really enjoying what they were doing with 6 and looking forward to what would come next (which unfortunately most likely won’t happen) In Particular, Siegfried’s story is one of my favorites in all of video games, from cocky pretty boy to tortured hero trying to atone for all he’s done, knowing he will never fully forgive himself…. Glad to see Thorgi on here, dude's easily one of my favorite guys on KZfaq. For my money, even with the retcons and flaws, the MK/Injustice games are the best in terms of plot. Between the story modes, the vast number of character interactions, and the movies, they've really done a lot to flesh out the characters and make me care about 'em. Soulcalibur VI also deserves a good mention for giving everyone in the roster their own canonical adventures during the story mode. Tekken used to be high on my list, until T6 made my boy Jin a war-mongering idiot. That, and the side characters getting increasingly shafted from T5 onwards. But I do like how the Bloodline cartoon handled everyone, that was cool. Fighting games as a whole could benefit from having more movies and TV shows.

@@anmoldembla4743 IIRC they actually did that (a School Life mode where you slowly build your custom character over the course of an in-game school year) with the evolution disc for the PS1 port of Rival Schools, though that was Japan only. Apparently people liked it so much that Capcom released an standalone expansion / Ver.2 of the evolution disc which added a couple of extra characters, among others. Project Justice also had a custom character feature, but it's School Life mode is instead a Mario Party clone. It's faster paced, but it's just not the same. Fun fact about early Marvel games: The JPN endings and manuals XvSF and MSHvSF seem to confirm the games take place in a Marvel Universe where the SF characters simply also exist. As there's seemingly no mention of worlds colliding, and even some nods to continuity such as Cyclops acknowledging teaming up with Ryu for a 2nd time in MSHvSF. Personally, I think there's 4 distinct continuities in MvC but that's a whole other can 'o worms lol.

The "Marvel VS Capcom" series has its own official designated Number within the Marvel Universe: "Earth-30847". The events of "Marvel VS Capcom Infinite" might muddy things up a bit, though, what with their forced and irreversible merging of "worlds" due to Ultron Sigma. ... Now that I think about it, Captain America's MvC1 ending is the closest to imply their worlds are separate. While the phrasing leaves it up in the air ("With Onslaught's demise, you may return home now."), he is addressing the Capcom cast and summing up the plot (Professor X called out to the heroes to stop Onslaught, and everyone in MvC1 answered the call), so...there's that.

Virtua Fighter, like Dead or Alive, has that mysterious-organization-acting-in-the-background trope. This same organization brainwashed Sarah was the same who kidnapped Kage's mother, later to be revealed as Dural, that metallic boss lady that is fought at the end of the arcade ladder. It is true that the entire cast of VF has personal stories revolving around the main plot and Lau and Pai's are among the ones that are intriguing to me. Sounds like Justin found a Marvel vs Capcom 「同人誌」doujinshi or fanzine...with a side of hentai.
@SageRuffin

As I understand, J6 (the "mysterious-organization-acting-in-the-background" in VF) is collecting data from the world's greatest martial artists in order to build the perfect super soldier that they will then sell to the highest bidder. The various twists and turns therein then come from someone getting too close to figuring out what they're doing (which, I think, is what happens to Sara and later Vanessa). I believe DoA does the same thing, but it's a lot more straightforward in VF. Plus Dural could spank any version of Alpha any day of the week.

I've always felt like, since DOA originally spun out of(*cough--ripped off) Virtua Fighter 2, a potential cross over could be set up with DOA Tech either being part of, or in competition against J6, with the Dural and Alpha projects vying for some kind of military something. Kage and Ryu Hayabusa could also be like secret rivals...or sneak in Joe Musashi of Shinobi, cuz why not?

@@JSRLPadre Tekken is actually more a VF-inspired fighter. I believe Harada has claimed as such. Arguably, one can say that VF is the progenitor of all 3D-fighters. Given the time it came out, Sega was truly ahead of the times with this franchise, which is something that can be said about many of their franchises upon their respective releases. Fun Fact: DOA and Virtua Fighter have already had a crossover: Akira, Sarah, Pai, and Jacky (?) were guest characters in DOA 5.

@@DanteMasaru DOA 1 was built on the same board as VF2, and played mostly the same, except for the then experimental stuff Itegaki did with the block button. DOA 3 was probably the first time DOA really developed a distinct identity, in my opinion. And DOA 5 is not a true crossover in my mind, since they only cherry picked the VF roster(and not even my actual favorite characters), rather than bringing in everybody. That's like saying Tekken 7 is as much a crossover as SF X Tekken. But then, I'm probably just being elitist or something.

27:25 So you mean to tell me that one night, Ganryu decided to listen to Gin and Juice before going to bed, and that's how we ended up getting a Snoop Dogg stage in Tag 2?

you guys should do one episode for each franchises' lore. There's so much to talk about MK, for instance.

I genuinely love fighting game lore and story, with my favorite part is what is canon in the next game.

Speaking of the MvC2 story, I think what helped me kinda understand what was going on was Baberuthless' stage analysis of them all. I'm also surprised during the MK segment, they only talked about the story mode and not how the arcade mode endings are all canon.

1:15:35 There was a mode in UMVC3 called Heroes and Heralds. It was a battle between good and evil each week. Players fought npc's with power-ups iirc. That was a cool game mode.

When it comes to stories in fighting games I often prefer the ones that revolves a tournament of sorts which gets to have some characters interacting with each other and comes around revolving the main boss of the game (kinda in a way of MK9 but sorta). The 1 minor aspect I do get annoyed with is the main protagonist being something special about them that allows him/her to face/defeat the main boss. And examples of this is Ryu who has the Satsui no hadou that Bison has been seeking to have his power and Ryu overcoming it and uses it against Bison. Or Liu Kang who's destined to be the "chosen one" by his mentor Raiden and is able to defeat his enemies whether it's Shang Tsung/Shao Khan or even Kronika. For once I would rather have like an underdog that is a nobody and able to defeat the big bad with his sheer power,determination and becomes someone important in the end. Say either Johnny Cage who wants to prove himself or Luke Sullivan who's now the protagonist has nothing special about him but is somewhat relevant to the story in someways.

Mortal Kombat had the best evolve story mode that I've ever played, Street Fighter has the most convoluted storymode. But I still love both in my own way.
