Stormy camper van trip to burns farm campsite

We headed to the Lake District national park in our VW California T5 campervan for the Lakeland festival of light in Keswick.
Little did we know, a named storm, Kathleen would cancel the event and leave us to hunker down in the van with 70mph winds!
Burns farm campsite was our destination and we timed it perfectly as we got to see a baby highland cow called April, 4 days after her birth. There were also baby lambs in various fields and we weren't too surprised to find we were the only campers in our field, with only 1-2 tents in the neighbouring field. A few motorhomes and caravans in the electric hook up pitches but overall, it was a fairly relaxing trip with a pub tea in Threlkeld for finish saturday off.
Sunday we headed to Derwent water where the storm really showed its strength, rocking boats on the waves, throwing spray across the pathways and soaking visitors but, this area of the UK is always beautiful no matter the weather thanks to the Lakeland fells and surrounding farmland.

That was great, much better to be out there with gorgeous scenery and chips, than trapped indoors, watching rubbish tv 😉 Lovely pics of the animals too and how sweet to have your doggy nestled in between you. (Just a pity it was a 2-2 draw!)

We spent the night (Monday) on the North Kent coast we had to park with the van backed into the wind with the pop top down due to the wind being 50mph plus ! By far the windiest night we’ve had in it so far, the van was covered in sand in the morning and blobs of sea foam, loved it though 👍🏻🇬🇧

You know what, pulling the bed out and watching the weather fronts come and go was really relaxing. Doesn’t make great KZfaq footage but we didn’t have a lot of choice 😁

New subscriber enjoying videos. just part exed our 7.5m motorhome for a t6 vw that we got Friday wondered if we had done the right thing ..still in the peak disrict loving the freedom we have with the smaller van and so much easier to visit places .😊

Thanks for joining us 🤩 WOW! That’ll take some getting used to 😄😄 but, the ease of driving to your destination, having more choice in smaller pitches or rustic campsites often makes a smaller van, the better choice. It’s when the weather turns bad, that you’ll miss the larger van but hopefully, we’ll get a great summer and it’ll all make sense ☀️

New to your channel, brilliant, love Jack, bless him, likes his comfort. We camped in East Dorset and got away with it, kept the roof up. Storm Kathleen was windy, but not as bad and no rain.😄🚐

Thank you 🙏🏼 Yeh Jack definitely isn’t a northerner but we’re working on toughening him up 😄😄 The winds act very differently in the mountains so we brought the roof down plus, prince Jack doesn’t like the noise 🙄

@@Professionalmoochers we live in the south, but I'm a Geordie!!! I did live on the Wirral for over 20 years 😀. Our German Short Haired Pointer is southern born, and if he could would love to get on the furniture in our campervan, but he's not allowed 😀🚐 Must catch up on your back catalogue. 😍

We feel your pain! We're visiting Shetland in our T6, where it can be quite wet and always windy, but the past few weeks here have been just another level! Still can't beat being away in the van though - whatever the weather - love it! Great video!

We were away too at mablethorpe Friday and Saturday, toilet tent lasted till Saturday afternoon then the hoolie came. Battern the hatches down came to mind haha. Laughing at your adventures @roratheexplorer John

It’s been windy on all my hikes over the last 6 month fed up with it, always nice during the week though, hoping you are all well. NC500 for us in a couple of week. Jack looks cool and settled 👌👍

You seem to find plenty of good sites to visit, as I have recently finished my campervan ( haven't used yet) do you prebook your sites or just turn up and hope there's room for you as most sites I've looked at seem to be already booked. Hard core is the way. We were out in it as well. 🤡 Foolishly we decided to climb the Old Man of Storr in it. 🤪🤪🤪 Did around 50 yds on our hands and knees at one point 🫣

No we brought it down as it got dark on the first night. Despite the forecast, especially amongst mountains, you never know what’s coming your way. They are pretty sturdy but if it’s getting above 40mph it’s always best to bring it down. Much quieter too.

We brought it down on the first night. Mainly for a quiet night sleep but when you’re amongst the mountains, you can’t rely on the forecast so played it safe too 👍🏼
