Sikh's have served alongside the allied forces in both World War I and II. They have sacrificed hundreds of thousands of lives to protect the freedom of their allies including Canada. During these wars, they wore their articles of faith, including their turbans. Sir John A. McDonald and Sir Winston Churchill both valued and commemorated the Sikhs for their contributions. As said by Sir Winston Churchill: “British people are highly indebted and obliged to Sikhs for a long time. I know that within this century we needed their help twice [in two world wars] and they did help us very well. As a result of their timely help, we are today able to live with honour, dignity, and independence. In the war, they fought and died for us, wearing the turbans.”

I can't wait for the day soon to come were a stupid Sikh crashes his motorcycle and you dumb ass people release we have laws in Canada for a reason. Do you really think that a fucken turban will save your lives. A turban is not a helmet or a hardhat. I don't care what Canada allows I will and do not and will never allow a man on my work site without a proper safety hardhat you don't like it you don't work. A tuban will not save you if a hammer falls off the 10 floor of a high rise. A hardhat barely even dose that.

@@budgettech3398 that's not what I was talking about. I don't care how new the laws are I live in bc and no I am not very young. However the law is to wear a helmet If everyone in canada has to wear a helmet because it's the law and it saves hour head from being split open like my late friend RIP. Did not use one and suffered the ultimate consequences. Why should they be able to not wear helmet a turbin will not save your life. As well I believe and most of my friends believe that in the Canadian armed forces and the RCMP it is not respecting our. Canadian uniforms. And another thing now things have changed this is a multi cultural country so it makes me furries to see a cadet or army reservist to be collecting money for poppy with (NO headdress.) If you are going to wear a turbin as your right either wear the actually Canadian armed forces Beret or your turbin however not wearing any headdress while on active duty is a major slap in the face and Disgraceful. When I was in between 1999 and 2005 I was taught the beret has so much meaning and must be shown its proper respect.

Could not be prouder of my father. To all the naysayers who say this is not what Canada is about then I suggest you take a look around and reevaluate your life here in this multicultural country we live in. I also ask you to take a look at your life and tell me what you've done? and then watch this interview. This man came from MALAYSIA and he became a CANADIAN and now serves and protects his country. His turban and faith has allowed him to not only do his job but to his job to the best of his ability, and has continued to help him live a life of integrity, dignity, nobility, and grace which is much more than i can say for some of those "true Canadians" you all speak of who are currently serving time behind bars for criminal activity. He is a part of Canadian history, and role model to thousands across the world. So to all the naysayers i say this - What have YOU done for "YOUR CANADA" ?

My only concern with having people in the military/police force/etc. Is that if there's a struggle/fight, and the head dress gets torn off, the long hair can be used against that person by being pulled. Same applies with facial hair, originally facial hair was removed by the military because of the previous states reason. It can be used against the individual. Other than that, I personally don't see why they can't wear it.

I don’t think a national police force with a regulated dress code should bend. And if the RCMP has any identity it would not have let this happen. It’s not a race debate. It’s about a national symbol being changed for ONE man. Not a religion not a belief it’s about twisting and prying ppl to basically let you change a symbol of a country to suit you. Next our flag?

I would like to politely say that Canada needs to grow some balls when dealing with multiculturalism. If Canada wants to be a forward marching country then we need to address within our borders what is acceptable especially when it comes to religious beliefs and what will or will not be tolerated. Case in point: In Abbostford there were KKK flyers being thrown on doorsteps. A uniform implicitly implies uniformity. I would not be able to go to a foreign country and act as I do in Canada and expect the authorities to respect me because I am simply from Canada and do not have a religious belief. Yet people from all over the world come here, which is neat, but in my experience I have not seen much in the way of integration. So who are the racists really? How would I know if someone from another country was racist or not?? I can't understand their language. If I dress up in a hijab and enter a store and call myself gay or transgenderd or a cross dresser or anything because I decided that I found a new religion... Think about it. I'm all for multicultalism... but there's too much bullshit to even know what a Canadian identity is anymore.

It is incredibly interesting that "headgear" is/was a topic of concern in an organization rife with dysfunction, corruption, misogyny,, fumbling leadership, criminal actions, perjury, murder, conflict of interest and we're supposed to care what type of hat he/she wears? If this organization was one of integrity and honor, then yes, it could be an issue, however it is common knowledge this group of offenders are not to be trusted in any circumstances, no matter what hat they are wearing.

First and foremost, I am a Canadian, 5th generation from father, 4th from my mother. We are of almost entirely Scottish heritage(some Irish way back, one English aunt via marriage). Because of the aforementioned, this does not entitled me or any other of "British" heritage to dictate what multiculturalism is or should be. To the matter being presented, I remember the time well. My original reaction was that the RCMP was and is an extremely flawed institution, therefore, knowing nothing of the faith, customs, rites, of Sikhism, I couldn't see how the infusion of new perceptions, beliefs, integrities could be of any harm. The issue became clear when it was simply an issue of right to wear a turban versus the iconic image of a "Mountie." Retrospect has shown that unfortunately, loyalty to country and loyalty to religion has been compromised, We need to preserve the iconic image, as tarnished as it is, sure, wear your turban, in the office, in meetings but out here please respect the icon and stop trying to impose your political correctness, BTW? is the turban actually a religious item?

And it's nothing personal, but my personal experience with Sikhs is that just like he said in the interview, they protect their own interests. Some of them are nice people, just like everyone else have some nice people... But in principle and observation first of all Sikhs are religious. Go to Surrey to find out how much. Very religious. I do not want a devout Christian police officer pulling me over never mind some officer that wears their religious beliefs on their head in Canada. It is as if another religion would be touting itself in my face in my country. I personally think this is wrong in Canada. And as far as what people have said about the Sikh people, myself including now, from my observations, my direct observations they do not care about anyone who is not Sikh. Same can be said for Chinese. So Who are the racists in this country?

+Irvanjit Singh you know something, when the Canadian government with the NWMP went to sign treaties with the natives they were told this is the deal take it or leave it but they still had to follow the rules of the dominion, Well when the sikhs, muslims or what ever your believes are came to Canada you should have been given the same speech, If you wanted to live the way you did in your home land then why don't you go back there, And don't think i am some anti immigration because I am not, I have many friends from countries in Europe Middle East, Australia and all around the world, and they live here like any other Canadians they all say why would they want to change the traditions of Canada, If they did not like it they would not have came here, I bet you if i went with my wife to some countries that I won't get into naming but the point if i went there and she refused to wear an hijab they would not be so open armed as we are, they would put her in jail or worst......

+Irvanjit Singh "A feeling of equality: Uniform brings every one to the same platform, no matter how rich or poor he or she is and thus inculcating a feeling of equality amongst those wearing the uniform."If one person is different its no longer equal... you end up with people feeling that some one is more special over the other, It acutely makes a problem with in the ranks, I have friends that ride motorcycles, now in BC Sikhs are exempt from wearing a helmet, I seen it first hand a week ago, now some of my friends ask what makes them more special that they do not have to follow the rules, I look at it different, If he gets into an accident and bumps his head and ends up in ICU with brain damage then why do my tax dollars have to pay to help someone who would not follow the Canadian laws because he thought he was special......

+Irvanjit Singh well ontario must have found that not wearing an helmet does put you at risk of getting hurt since the government ruled that you can not wear aTurban well riding a motorcycle, the defence tried saying that his religion could not allow him to wear a helmet, the reply was that your religion does not allow you to ride a motorcycle, For once the courts did the right thing in not allowing one class to be special over others...... also you might have been born in Canada, But if you want to live like you do in India or South Asia then why don't you try Immigrating there, when my grand parents came here in the 30's they did not try to change anything, they worked there land practiced there religion within the walls of there house and just tried to fit in, what happened to them days, In Toronto there has been cases wear businesses that have placed a Christmas tree or nativity scene and been told that they can no longer have that display because it might offend someone of a different religion, Tim Hortons workers were told not to say Marry Christmas that it might offend some other religions, And yes i have told a jewish man Marry Christmas and he replied back Happy Hanukkah, He was not upset, nor was I upset, I respected the Unity, But now if we are told that we must watch what we say or do that it might offend someones religion then what about if wearing a turban or hijab offends me.... what if praying in public offends me or others..... what you do in the walls of your own home is your business and your free to practice what you want, but if you want to start forcing other people to except you but you cannot except the rules in place or other cultures then what you are going to end up with is many different cultures clashing with each other and civil war starting because one religion thinks its better then the other, HAHA now we have never seen that happen before have we......

+Andrew Elcich The Sikh turban has been part of the standard uniform of Sikhs serving in the British Army and Commonwealth armies since 1848. Thousands of Sikh soldiers died fighting evil in both world wars and other battles worldwide - wearing their turban and fighting for King and Country. If the Queen of Canada is British, our national symbols and institutions must also reflect that similarity.

This is what Canada is all about, multiculturalism. Canada is a mix of cultures that live together. I don't understand why some people say that only white people are Canadians it doesn't make sense at all. I'm quite sure that every "white" person has their own ethnicity or country of origin from which they keep religious beliefs. As well as other cultures have their own religious beliefs. What difference does it make that this Sikh is allowed to wear his turban and a "white" person is allowed to wear any article of faith, none. This entire racism thinking mindset is what causes war in this world and leads to so much havoc. If only people had the dignity and respect to acknowledge over ethnicities as equal, meaning not less and not more this world would be such a better place!!!!!

So we live in a double standard society. Some can flout Canadian tradition, laws, and get away with it. I have to wear a helmet if I ride a motorcycle or certain jobs and construction trades. Why should taxpayers be on the hook to pay the medical bills for a turban wearer that could have been saved from serious head injury if they wore a helmet? This could be for life and cost taxpayers millions in care. YET THEY ARE EXEMPT FROM THE LAWS ANY OTHER CANADIAN HAS TO ABIDE BY! What about the safety of a fellow RCMP member if, in a attack the criminal goes for the turban and hair, getting the drop on said officer??? Wouldn't be the first time it took several officers to subdue someone. Ah, but that doesn't matter when it comes to Charter Rights, DOES IT!!
