Does anyone know what sludge actually is? My late bro had a late 60z ford 3/4ton for hauling trailers. It had grey sludge level between valves. After a cleaning, the valves were not hanging up.
@WhipCityWrencher
@WhipCityWrencher 2 ай бұрын
I'm no expert but I think it's a combination of things. Mostly oil breakdown from combustion blow-by past the rings, fuel dilution, moisture, lack of timely OCIs, short trips,.etc. I remember the older engines from the '60s through '80s used to always be slugged up. I took a few apart back then and the sludge was so thick under the valve covers you could scrape it with a putty knife. 5K oil change intervals with a synthetic oil and it doesn't seem to happen these days. I'll pin your question so that it sits on top.

Not a fair fight. The STP comes from the Fram school of cheap filters with cardboard endcaps and the Fleetguard has metal endcaps, my preference of a coil spring and synthetic media. The only question on the Fleetguard is why the media has those indents.
@danp7463
@danp7463 4 ай бұрын
The STP oil filter was actually better than I thought it would be. I was honestly expecting the STP filter to have a thin section of media and a huge spring. It's a blue Fram filter. I've used Fram plenty of times and no problems. Machinery doesn't know the difference between oil Brands; the consumer does and has the pocket full of money.

I think that with the Fleetguard's filtering media, those "holes" are actually points where they heated the element so it doesn't separate from itself. I question if fluid could flow through there regardless of the thickness.

Great video Whip! The Fleetguard has stratpore technology, the best filter media imo, it is very strong and not restrictive, it also filters down to very small contaminants. I use Fleetguard for oil and fuel filters and they are extremely well made. The only downside is they are hard to find locally so I order them online. STP makes decent filters but this comparison wasn't even close! Fleetguard for the 🏆

Good video between these two filters. I would have to agree with others that this STP blue filter is an older version. I don't see this filter here at Autozone anymore. It does look like a rebadged Fram. To be honest I still have one that I never used because it did not look very good to me. Seems like these companies choose multiple companies to make their filters. The Filterguard looks like a very good filter. The little holes you see in the filter media are actually small heat weld points to join different layers of filter media together. Where I used to work we made our own filters for emulsion that consisted of four layers of synthetic material. We used a heated die on a roller that joined the different layers together. If you have an exacto knife you can actually separate the different layers on the piece you cut out for the thickness measurement. Just pick at the cut end to separate the layers.

I use the STP filters quite often. I've noticed that with STP different models of filters are made by various different companies. Most of them look like Champ filters with the plastic core. That S2 looks like a stinkin' Fram. And sometimes they sneak a chinese filter in on you. I bought a couple S16 STP filters and they were the chinese variety. I guess that's part of the excitement of an STP oil change, the suspense of finding out which cheapo filter they snuck inside your box.

Not felt. Not paper or cardboard either. If this filter is truly made by Fram, as some here have speculated, it’s an engineered fiber. All it has to do is stay glued to the ends of the pleats to seal them so the oil must pass through the filter media. I agree, it’s not a good looking filter.

My employer went with NAPA oil filters at work. They suck due to being way shorter and making for less oil capacity for my dump truck engine. Also, when we used the FleetGuard oil filters they were longer and far easier to install. NAPA sucks b***s compared to FleetGuard filters.

Not exactly an apples to apples comparison, imo. STP is basically the WM Super Tech ST series filter that can be purchased off the shelf for ~$3.50. The Fleetguard shows most places ~$23, perhaps somewhat less elsewhere. First Brands chose Fram to make this STP, most blue cans same as ST are ecores made by Champ. This Fleetguard a good filter. Some you've posted have been made by M&H Purolator. Cost being no object with heavy duty use, Fleetguard the choice. Thanks for vid

Just slapped a stp s2 filter on my 03' taurus wagon (3.0l 24v DOHC duratec v6) first oil change since i got it, less than 3k miles ago. It had a valvoline v0-88 on it, and i had bought an stp filter # s(cant remeber the numbers, but can write em here later) when i first got the car, after looking up what filter SHOULD fit, but the threads were FAR too small to fit. Does anyone know of any filters that i could use that arent the stp s2, or the v0-88? Also great vid!

Not really. First Brands, parent of Champ and Fram makes the call on who makes which filter. In this specific case, the STP S2 is made by Fram, thus the fiber endcaps. Most other STP blue cans are Champ made ecore filters, most using metal caps. Basically, same as SuperTech ST line.
@daewooparts
@daewooparts Жыл бұрын
@@faxmen09 the new FRAM endurance filter is definitely a Champ Labs built filter, the rolls are reversed with the STP S2 it's definitely a FRAM, First Brands is mixing them up on both brands, AC Delco had issues & complaints when the FRAM guts ended up in there filters a few years ago & made them go back to the original E Core with metal endcaps & revised the part #'s

@@daewooparts No argument on Champ Labs made Fram FE, but not the point of the previous reply. Fram make topic STP S2, most like Super Tech ST made by Champ, ecore. The metal caps on Champ ecore including ACDelco were polyester caps. Just changed to metal not long ago realtively. However, ACDelco for GM vehicles with filter bypass never used a combo valve, always separate dome bypass. Personally, never see a Fram made ACDelco with fiber caps.
