The first three months of recovery from strabismus surgery included redness, swelling, double vision, dizziness, emotional anxiety and distress, and eyes that were not always straight.
In this video I go through what my experience was like and when symptoms like double vision, redness, itching and dizziness started going away.

I’m 16 and I’m really trying to convince my parents to get surgery. I have exotropia in my right eye whenever I’m not wearing glasses and it’s robbed me of my self-confidence since I was a kid and it’s only gotten worse as I’ve gotten older. When I was a kid I hated it because people would always ask me if I was paying attention or looking at them and I have adhd as well so it’s already hard enough for me to focus. Thanks for creating this video.

I really enjoyed the information in this video. I started vision therapy earlier this year and I'm having my surgery in about 2½ weeks. I had this surgery once as a child at age 10 to correct my eye, but it has gradually turned in again over the years. I've hated my eye for so long because of it. I decided to give vision therapy a try this year and it has been amazing. When my therapist sent me home with some prisms I can hold over my glasses I was able to see actual 3D and it absolutely floored me! I still just walk around holding them sometimes and looking at things like a total goober :-) In addition to that I actually had a spontaneous moment of stereopsis without trying at all. Of all the places, I was at a urinal looking at the little square tiles on the wall in front of me and without trying my vision fused and a few of them popped and looked like they were floating off the wall. I blinked and it was gone, but it just caught me completely off guard. Vision therapy, if it's an option, is a big piece of the puzzle. Getting your eyes aligned is a big piece as well, but sometimes the brain needs a little nudge to relearn how to work with them. I think that's why my surgery didn't stick as a child. By the time I had the surgery, my brain was already kind of ignoring that right eye and sticking with the better image from the left. Without any therapy to work on getting them both involved, it just continued to ignore it and here I am at 46 going in for round 2. Also, for the record, it doesn't ignore it 100% - I basically have bifocal vision. My left eye is the dominant one and is used for distance as it requires little to no correction. My right eye, however, is extremely nearsighted (about 4") and needs a heavy correction. When I move something from far to near I can actually see and feel the handoff between the eyes. It's a trip.

How did it go? I had my eye done at age 11,am now 34 and in need of another surgery!
@billdo75
@billdo75 Жыл бұрын
@@doodle3762 It went pretty routine. The actual surgery went pretty fast. I woke up in recovery and was groggy for a bit. I had a bandage over my right eye at that point. Once I had cleared up a bit, the surgeon came out and took off my bandage and HOLY DOUBLE VISION! The surgeon had an assistant hold a small flashlight maybe about 8 feet away from me. She got ready, then had me follow the light and she was adjusting the suture on my right eye to get it straight. She did adjust both eyes, but the bulk of the change was in the right. Anyways, she put some goop in my eyes and sent me on my way. Then it was just a few days of rest and relaxation. I thought it was really weird that just an hour after having my eye operated on I was just sitting on the couch watching TV. There were a few times where my eyes felt a bit strained and a small bit of pain and I would just lay down with an ice pack on them. I never felt the need for even OTC pain medication. All told, the recovery was pretty easy. As for now, it's pretty awesome. Every once in a while my right eye wants to get lazy again (that's what it's done for 30+ years, so...), so I do my stretches and that will usually loosen it up. Seeing in 3D has been so cool! I remember the day after my surgery we went for a walk around the neighborhood and I was just amazed. I would find myself just staring at various things as I walked by them - plants, and even poles, whether they were power lines or street signs. Just seeing the separation in space was incredible. Here I am almost a year later and I still sometimes just sit and look at things and marvel at how much different everything looks. And I will reiterate again that vision therapy was a godsend. They were getting my eyes working together (as best they could back then...) before surgery, so once my eyes were both straight they just fell right in line. Surgery will get the eye straight, but it will possibly take more work beyond that to keep it straight. I don't think I would've needed another surgery if I had been in vision therapy after getting it fixed the first time.

Hi, just wanted to say thank you for posting such a detailed video! Was very helpful for me as I was healing. I too had bilateral strabismus surgery on 4 muscles back on March 5th. Healing was rough the first week and got better from then on. A few days ago (3 weeks post op) I decided to challenge my muscles in looking to the left and right at sharp angles as I was hoping that it would start to stretch the muscles that were still very tight. I started to feel a bit of pain after that and each day since it has gotten a bit more sore. I now can see redness starting on the outer part of my eyeball where the muscle was worked on and I can still see the blue stitch underneath. I was just wondering if you had reinjured yourself at all when you started your exercises? I may end up having to go back and see the surgeon 😢

I know that feels like a long time, but it does take the brain time to adjust to the new eye position. If the alignment isn't perfect, it can also make it more difficult. I wouldn't worry too much until it's been 5-6 weeks. Nope, nothing with strabismus is permanent. It all depends on whether the brain accepts the eye position. It cost me $10,000 and my eyes do not hurt anymore.

I have been following a lady on here and she helps people all over the world she's Says a big percentage of the time vision therapy is successful alone because surgery helps align the eyes and so many people need several surgeries but vision therapy works with the eye and the brain she say it's too many people that go in after word needs like 3 or 4 more surgeries after that.. when vision therapy itself works with the brain and the eyes and with so much new technology why do people that do surgeries in up having one after another and sometimes then another but she did say witj a big percentage Vision Therapy can be successful alone because it helps train the brain and the eyes to work together surgeries fix the eyes but not the brain is why people sometimes need multiple surgeries

Vision therapy is amazing and it does work! For some people, even if the brain can learn to use the eyes together, they aren't able to keep the eyes straight because they've been it the wrong position for so long. For me, combining surgery with vision therapy was the perfect answer.
