Thanks for your honesty. I just smile when the 6.5 subjects comes up because I’ve been shooting a .264 win mag for 50+ years from a teenager to present. It blows away any of the smaller 6.5s. I’ve shot two elk with 140 Partion/ Nosler, two moose with 140 Hornady SST, a tractor trailer full of whitetails, countless numbers of woodchucks and been very happy with it. I also own plenty of rifles to choose from 17 HMR to 375 H&H but my 264 is my go to gun and always will.

I had a AR10 in both 308 and 6.5 Creedmoor after shooting a 260 Remington both of my AR10 have been converted over to the 260 Remington. I will take a 260 Remington or 7mm08 over the 6.5 Creedmoor any day and under any condition

Ditto brother. I've been loving two 260 rifles since 2005. I'm grateful for the Creedmoor craze because it has increased the selection of good bullets for those of us shooting the Swede and the 260. I have no need for the CM at all. Preach it!

Loved 6.5 and .260 long before the creedmoor. See no reason for the creedmoor. Remington dropped the ball on the 260 like so many other of their products. A friend of mine has a 300 SAUM truly a great round and fits in the model 7. Like the fireball, big green has shit on some great products

I have experience with the 6.5 x 55 Swede and found it to be very comfortable and accurate to shoot but, I decided to look around for a new rifle using a 6.5 bullet. The 6.5 Creedmor is getting a lot of publicity but after much thought I decided on the 260 Remington. Now after shooting the 260 for 4 months I am no expert but I feel I made the right decision............. besides I am not one to follow crowds.

Hello Sam, I want to send you greetings all the way from Sweden, not very far away these days with the internet and all... but anyways. Thanks for all youre very informative videos. I specially appriciate youre humble aproach and down to earth presentation. Makes it very trustworthy compared to very much else. By the way, as you may know, we have been shooting the 6.5x55 mauser since 1894 in Sweden. Actually very similar to the 260 remington, necked down 308 as I understand. First with the military rifle m94 Mauser which was bought from Germany and earned a very fine reputation for being true and sharp shooting specially with the uppgraded version m96 with a longer barrel. So first of as a military ammunition and then as a hunting caliber. With out a doubt the most popular hunting caliber in Sweden and Norway. I really find it intriging that a cartridge more than 100 years old turns out to be such an extraordinary success. Best regards/Matz

You do a great job on your videos! One thought for You from an elk hunter of 55 years who has taken over 60 elk. I used to also believe in full penetration and exit holes-my first 40 elk were taken with bullets such as the Nosler partition or Barnes TS with .270, .308, 7mm mag and ..338 win mag. Most of them traveled at least 100 yards with a good lung shot-some traveled up to a mile. Since I have started using the140 grain Berger VLD's in my 6.5-284 and 6.5 CM I have taken over a dozen elk from 50 yards to 780 yards-none have taken more than 10 steps and most drop in their tracks with a lung shot. My all-time favorite elk medicine is my 7mm mag shooting 168 grain Berger VLD's. Keep up your great videos but don't sell the 6.5 short for elk-they are awesome with the Berger VLD 140 or Hornady eld-X 143's.

Excellent commentary! I dropped my first ever cow elk this past December on Wagonhound ranch near Douglas, Wyoming with a 165 grain GMX running a little over 3000 FPS in my .300 WM. Cow was 169 yards and dropped in her tracks. Mine was probably about 1.5 to 2 years old. The massive cow my brother dropped right before I got mine was with a 150 grain factory GMX. Dead right there. Those are some BIG critters compared to the deer I hunt in PA. There is simply no ethical reason at all for guys to go light on them. No way I'd use a 6.5 on elk. Thanks for this series! I very much value your opinion and expertise.

So, a 6.5 is a no go on elk... I use a 6.5-284 Norma for elk. Never had one get away. I use a 160 grain Matrix bullet at 2,860 fps. Probably not much less energy than your 300 WM with 165 grainers.

I appreciate your video, and I complement you, as you did a great job. I have been considering both of these calibers for a new rifle. Not building one, but buying one. For some reason the 260 stands out to me. I am currently doing as much research as I can, but I am finding the 260 ammo is extremely hard to find and I do not reload like yourself. I like what you had to say about shooting an elk, but I will add one point to this. My father has used a 243 sako rifle his entire life, he has killed many Colorado and Oregon elk, bear and deer. From many long distances and most of them were killed with one shot. A lot of it is in your placement and your discipline.

Great vids, subscribed! So I've got a slightly different approach. For precision and target competition, I chose a 6.5X47 lapua, shooting 136 Scenar OTM L hand loads; 2780 fps from a 26" barrel. This is a consistent 1/6 moa rig, and will compete up to 1000m. For off season target practice, I swap barrels to a 22-250, and use the same chassis & action(Saving a ton of cash on reloading). For hunting large deer & medium elk, I went with a 6.5X280 Ackley Improved(different action), which will push a 140 VLD or Partition past 3300fps( with excellent accuracy to 400m), from a 24" medium profile barrel. This methodology provides +1700 ft/lbs of ballistic force up to 400m, in a very accurate cartridge, with little meat loss. Thanks for all your contributions to the sport, I hope you can monetize this content and support the habit!!

I have killed +70 elk in my lifetime. I have killed them with a .243, ( my first rifle in 1976), .308, .270, .30-06,.300wm and a .300wsm. I can tell, you from vast experience that depending on the situation elk are one tough mother to down. I put 3 (.300wm 200gr soft point) in a cow running over a ridge, that had been pushed by hunters. She had all 3 rounds with a 6" circle of each other, all in the money just above the heart. She ran 500 yards into the timber like she had not been hit. If it wasn't for the report (sound) of impact I could have swarn I'd missed her. I found her 40 minuets later and she lifted her head as I approached. I couldn't believe she was still alive. Elk are tough, I feel you need a .30 caliber bullet in the 168gr or heavier to be considered a good pill for there toughness. I now use a .300wsm and shoot 168gr bergers and there going fast (+3000 fps.) there very accurate flat shooting and the hydrodynamic shock of this bullet drops them like a .338. I got complete pass though on a bison last year. Quartering away we measured 5' of path. The bull dropped like I'd hit it with a.45-70. Can you kill an elk with a 6mm or 7mm yes you can, but your going to wound some and not recover some also, elk are tough and they can cover miles in hours. Gut/liver shoot one with a 30-06 and 200 gr bullets you will find him. Shot one like that, too far back with a .260 you wont. That caliber just doesn't have the terminal weight to kill it, and it will suffer a long death. miles from where you shot it. I've seen this happen many times. with bigger calibers but smaller weigh bullets. (150gr) my 2 cents.

I shoot the 260rem becouse I use 308 brass to make 260 brass, I get my 308 brass for free from the range. They are all once fired Norma or Lapua brass. And the 6,5mm bullets just have the advantage over other calibers when it comes to BC and SD.
@bluntbone
@bluntbone 3 жыл бұрын
Respectfully, that's not true. That's sales BS. Every caliber can have great BC and SD when the appropriate bullet weight and shape is chosen. Which is best for your application will depend upon the bullet weight and SD you need to get the penetration you need. If you want to compare calibers you have to compare the BCs of bullets of the same shape and the same SD. Otherwise it's apples and oranges. That's the BS the manufacturers pull.

The issue that I might mention is that you recommended the Hornady ELDX for elk. I have seen some penetration tests where the core separated from the jacket pretty bad. I would lean toward the 127g Barnes LRX if your twist is fast enough to stabilize. Nosler makes the 130g AB and then there is always the good ol 140g Nosler Partition. It does not shoot on paper quite as accurate, but is plenty accurate for hunting purposes.

You nailed it, I have 35 years of hunting experience, shooting both these mid-range cartridges all over the west and AK. The 6.5 calibers are on the light side for elk. Lack of pass-through and this poor blood trail make it less-than optimum for elk. I've seen Moose, black bear, caribou and elk killed with both of these and other 6.5s. that said, I've also been on hunts when animals hit solidly we're not retrieved or had to be tracked up to 1.5 miles. Both rounds are excellent at what they do, but elk aren't what they do best.

Well Mr Sam, I don't think you have the slightest idea 'bout whatchertalkin'bout... I done did shot me one of them there big deers you're talking about with my 6.5 cridmore... I shot him off my pappy's rickety back porch at the farm in North Colorader... I use a special formulation with my 6.5 so that it's subsonic that's why the deers can't hear it coming... I shot that one at 3200 yards with a North wind coming straight up. Caught him in the right shoulder and it came out the left lower neck area, dropped like a sack-o-tatters... Ok now you get to explain how deer can hear a gunshot from something traveling faster than the speed of sound versus something traveling slower than the speed of sound where they would hear the gunshot first then the bullet would hit the ground after they already ran off Saying a deer will not hear the gunshot from a subsonic which by the way is so slow it would never make it to 1000 yards let alone 3200 is like saying you could not hear the train before it hit you because it was moving too slow LOL Oh wait you were just kidding never mind LOL

Last year I went for antelope/pronghorn with my 264 Winchester magnum. I wanted a good performance from my bullet so I did a wet newspaper test (I don’t have my hands on ballistic gel). I shot the paper at 100 yards. I shot the 100 grain nosler partition, 120 grain Sierra pro hunter and the 130 grain triple shock x Barnes. I was looking for good penetration and bullet structure. The results were the 100 grain went to 74.2 grains (nosler says they shed 30% of there weight) 12” penetration , 120 grain went to 51.2 grains 7” penetration, 130 grain went to 129.6 grains with 22” penetration. My elk/moose bullet is the Barnes tsx 130 grain. The solid copper bullets penetrate deep and mushroom nicely. I also have a 6.5-284 for my wife and as much as I do not like the 270 (personal preference) her 270 is the go to for elk/moose not her 6.5-284. I always like a little bit more foot pounds overs velocity if I have it. Really good performing bullets has changed the game. Taking big animals with smaller calibers. If you went for elk/moose would you use the 6.5-284?

It's been done on Elk as i hunted with an old timer who every year got his elk using 6.5mm X 55 mm ctg... I lean more towards the 6.5mm/ 284 Norma ctg.. I have looked hard a the 6.5 mm X 47mm Lapua ctg . I hunt with a fellow who uses a 6.5mmX57mm custom built , he has taken a number of Elk that i know about .. Ackley improved yes i agree with that and have had it done ... If i had to or wanted to use the 260 Remington or 6.5 Creedmoor for Elk , i would use a tough bullet , Nosler Partition or Swift A-frame bullets , one more is Barnes TSX bullet..Deer where i live one does not need a partition bullet , Hornady interlock is tough and works fine and stays together .. Bullet placement is very important on Elk size game ,if you don't have the correct angle for a quick kill , don't take the shot..Some of what i have learned out there in the field in 56 years ..

Thank you Sam for another great video. I like the fact that you do not profess to be an expert on every caliber like some of these gun magazine and internet gun writers. I have a Savage Model 12 FV in 6.5 Creedmoor but I am not married to it. My research says that if you do not reload, go with 6.5 Creedmoor due to the amount of options in factory ammo. If you are a reloader go with 260 Remington because it has 5% more case capacity so you can do more with the 260 case. Both are great cartridges, as is the 6.5-284.

Per nosler with 140-142 grain bullets the 6.5 creedmoor, 260 rem and 6.5-284 Norma have 46.8, 47.4, and 58.4grs of H20 usable case capacity respectively. That is just over 1% going from the creedmoor to the Remington and a 23% increase from the Remington to the Norma. The biggest difference between the two cartridges is that the 260 rem was designed to shoot lighter bullets than the Creedmoor and that is reflected in the factory twist rates.

I agree 100% re the 6.5 on elk. Just because you can kill one with it, doesn't make it an elk hunting round. After I read Jim Carmichael's (spelled wrong) article on the 6.5 bobcat and what's now the 260 Rem. I had to have one. Loading data was nonexistent so I used 6.5 Sweedish data as a starting point. Back then, the Nosler 125 gr Partition was my go to hunting bullet. Still a good choice. Keep up the good work.

I personally like the .264 Win Mag. The bullet selection has greatly improved over the past few years and not much I can't do with it. Large game or coyotes, I can do it effectively. Just a long overlooked cartridge because of an undeserving reputation.

The 160 grain round nose bullet is more than adequate to humanely put down a 1000+ lb. bull Roosevelt elk, but within 250 yards. This will limit your options however, that a larger cartridge could provide. My personal favorites are the 7mm SAUM, 7mm WSM, or the venerable 7mm Rem. Mag.; they offer a near perfect combination of terminal ballistics, but with superior external ballistics comparable to 30 cal. bullets of the same charge and mass. I use Hornady's 175 grain ELD-X mv@2980 fps for Roosevelt elk, and prepared to meet the largest.

Being European, of course I am shooting 6,5x55 SE. The American made ammunition is very low pressure in contrast with European made. (SAMMI- 51000 PSI vs CIP-55100 PSI). I will not tell how fast I shoot my 6.5x55, but if I use the same pressure as the 6,5 Creedmoor uses (SAMMI -62,000 psi) , the Swedish can shoot about 150 fps faster than Creedmoor, and with a 160gr bullet it is the real deal for big moose. Hunting and shooting are two different things. It is a pleasure to see you saying that 6.5 is not the caliber for long range hunting. Cheers mate

Hi Sam I just discovered your video about 260 Remington. I've done quite a bit of reading about this calibre. In Australia it seems not to be popular. Cases, and projectiles plus factory ammo are hard to come by. 6.5 mm Creedmoor is becoming popular but very expensive factory ammo. What I was wanting to know is the comparison between each of the 6.5mm calibres e,g, 6,5mm creedmoor, 6,5 x 55 swedish and the 260 Remington. Your channel is great. Thx Mark

Bullet placement is what it is all about any of your cartridges will work and equally well having taken over 20 elk with a 270 and 130 grain bullet it is about the same difference to many folks read to much into what gun they shoot instead of how they shoot their gun, I have shot them with 7mmSTW, 308, 270, 6.5 CR,127 grain Barnes My choice, but my rules of firing no neck shots, no head shots , all shots with whatever you shoot are behind the crease of the front shoulder and half way up the body you live by those rules you will do very well on elk a shooter is harder to find than he is to kill...good luck. The reason I like Barnes 98% of the time you get two holes.... i like two holes :)

Well put the solid copper bullets are just flat out better for hunting. I have killed 2 Elk 14 Deer and like 40 pigs with a 120 grain bullet at 3000fps out of a .260 Remington. NOT ONE BULLET RECOVERED. Only 2 required a second shot (1 deer and 1 pig both poor shots on my part). Hit them in the heart and they will die.

I like 308 wildcats. Years ago I had a Savage heavy barrel 25-06 shortened and rechambered for .257/308 Ackley Improved with a 40 degree shoulder by Carolina Precision Rifles, as I recall. Before V bucks it was old school glass bedded. I fire lapped the barrel (something people did then) and the results were amazing. I probably shot a thousand rounds or more trying all kinds of loads and bullets. Even wrote a magazine article for Precision Shooting. One three shot group at 100 yards with an 87 grain bullet, maybe a Speer, was in the .200' area. Long time to remember that all but it was great fun. If I was showing today I'd probably own a 260 Improved.

I’ll be using that bullet, ELD X143, in a 6.5 PRC this season for both deer and elk. I’d go heavier but finding a 156 grain Berger is like finding an honest politician. They make them but none to be found before I hit the timber. PRC is completely different than the Creedmoor’s as I’ve been learning…the hard way.

Excellent presentation. I'm a HUGE fan of the .260 Rem - for whitetail deer. Sadly I don't have any elk to play with here in NY (we killed off all the Eastern Elk with flintlocks and round balls before the Civil War) so I have what I consider an unbeatable cartridge for killing deer under 350 yards with one good shot. Sometimes as close as 10 yards! Many other cartridges do just as well. Why must there be a "best"? In my experience it's more the hunter than the cartridge. Get close, shoot well, shoot once. If I had the opportunity at an elk I'd be working up a load for either the 156 gr Norma Oryx or the Barnes 127 gr LRX (my Savage has the "proper" 1:8" twist). Or I'd buy a .338 Win Magnum. But I am below rookie stage on elk so that's just a guess. My current deer load is the 130 gr Sierra GameChanger and a compressed load of Alliant Reloader 19. The .260 Rem is a very efficient way to fill the freezer.

HAHA..exactly! Hornady's success is mostly all due to their great marketing. They do make fantastic bullets and loadings however, but so do many others. When you can take your typical Vmax bullet, put a green tip on it instead of red, have an artist do some cartoonish zombie work on the box and call it the Z max zombie killing load in order to make sales of the 223 55gr Vmax load skyrocket over night...they know what they're doing. They certainly know how to take advantage of trends and even creating ones themselves..hence the 6.5 CM and PRC

Just a little bit more speed, which would be probably easy to get with a tad more 4350 and you have around that will hit an elk harder at a thousand yards than the 300 Winchester magnum. When I used to load up my 700 Remington mag back in 1980 I used benchrest load that was 3 grains higher 4350 than any reloading manual listed. The nice thing about 4350 is because it's such a slow powder it doesn't Spike chamber pressures. So hundred forty grain Spire Point either from Sierra or Hornady we're running almost 3400 feet per second and the first 20 rounds after sight in of my Ruger Model 77 you could cover with a dime.

Hi Sam @Panhandle Precision, once again you "nail it!". Firstly, thank you for your time and effort your videos are always awesome and your acknowledge is above anything else I possible can "imagine" ( i am only a new be) LOL. Just a simple comment here, where i live heaps of people opt for the Creedmoor over the 260 for the simple reason we have plenty of creedmoor ammo available at the counter but not many at all of the 260 Rem. It is like compare a 308 Win with some other effective caliber of not many available factory ammo. In New Zealand the 260 works great for those who reload, like you, but the creedmoor is the go too for those who shoot factory ammo(or just don't reload). As always, thank you for your time and services for the community i really appreciate and believe everyone who watch your channel at some point.
@PanhandlePrecision
@PanhandlePrecision 6 жыл бұрын
For sure. I would recommend the 6.5CM to anyone who doesn't reload, especially those who shoot a relatively high volume of rounds. Although there are some standouts, like Berger, the 260 Remington is shamefully under-represented with factory loaded ammo. I believe that is the entire reason for the Creedmoor's rise in popularity. Good hearing from you!

If I were considering a Precision Rifle, for either target shooting or hunting anything from varmints to Elk/Moose, I'd choose the 7mm-08. Had I known back in the day, I wouldn't have felt the need for the .243, 25-06 nor .300 Win Mag currently occupying my safe. I'd probably have more 7mm-08s with custom loads worked up for different applications, e.g. varmint, medium game, big game and target. It's a very versatile cartridge with low recoil so crucial to accurate shooting by most people. fwiw.

I have to agree, 6.5 is not the best cartridge for elk. However, I have taken two elk with my Proof Research elevation chambered in 6.5 Creedmore. I was running a 127 grain LRX over 41.3 grains of H-4350 at 2,830. Both shots were right at 300 yards and were clean kills. First dropped right where she stood from a neck shot and second went 25 yards after a double lung shot. Both had full penetration with great terminal ballistics. I would definitely limit myself to 500 yards with it. At the time, it was what I had and I chose the right bullet for the job.

With the 143 gr Hornady ELD-X, I can squeeze 2860 fps accurately. I also did what you did, but with a 7mm SAUM in a Savage long action, with a 25" Criterion barrel 1-9 twist; and on a Boyds "Pro Varmint" stock that I pillar-bedded and free-floated. Next time tell me something I don't know about placing a correct shot which has nothing to do with the sarcasm post about the CM. Nothing I ever hit with my .243 in 47 years suffered more than a few steps. I don't want an animal to suffer but predators make them suffer way more than a human with a gun ever would. Well I might make an exception for a Coyote. Those POSs pet killers need to suffer. I could watch those worthless things suffer without a hint of remorse.
