On this episode of "QUICK TRIPS" My buddy Mike and myself set out to catch an EPIC sunrise on Mt.Amabillis in the Cascade Mountain range. Let's just say the mountain had other plans for us. This quick, low key, morning trail ride quickly became a test of our grit and recovery gear as we work from early afternoon into the night and fight tooth and nail to get back down this unforgiving mountain.

Man! You weren’t lyin. I wish I’d have known you were stuck sooner. I’d have tried to help come recover you. Since we were only a few miles apart on a different trail. On the phone it sounded like a sketchy day. But this video puts that more into perspective! And the quality of these videos man! Can’t wait for another Grand X adventure!

Great video, those types of days are a lot of work and a lot of fun at the same time. I love that you're letting people know about God also. I always feel closest to him in the woods, and many in the Bible also went out into nature and into the mountains to speak with God so i believe there really is something to it. I just bought a 99 Jeep WJ v8 as kind of an "adventure" type rig. Hopefully will do some camping out of it and possibly some light off roading (i have a sxs for the harder stuff) but im looking forward to getting it lined out and setup for some camping trips. Keep up the good content 👍

@@GrandExploration You're welcome, it's always nice to see people sharing the word! I live in central Kentucky, pretty good haul from where you're at. We definitely don't quite have the huge mountain ranges you all have out West, but we do have some pretty beautiful mountains in Tennessee and Eastern Kentucky.

That tow hook breaking is why friends dont let friends run RC products 😬😬😬. Real glad no one got hurt. Might be a good post to sticky on the FB page to warn people what happens when you try to actually use their stuff.

Not only that but John and I were talking and I was telling him I was going to get those recovery hooks and he said no way man. Mine just broke on what otherwise would have been an easier recovery. I just wished we both would have had better service. Since I was only a few miles away on a different trail.

I just bought a 2023 WL and have been almost too afraid to drive it up our road (we live on a mountain and have a small stretch like that cliff you were stuck next to). I guess I shouldn’t be afraid because obviously it can do way more than I’m brave enough to do in it! Thanks for sharing your adventures! (Found and subbed a week ago after I picked up my vehicle and loving your videos so far!)

Happened to me a couple years back on my wk2, very stressful! Luckily some great people from Placerville, CA and El Dorado Hills put together a recovery mission to get me unstuck before a storm that was projected to drop 9 feet of snow came down

I've got a WK2 and wondering why use the 'Sand' Mode when traversing through some thicker snow? What Modes have you found to be more effective? I looked through the manual and couldn't find what each mode actually changes.

Yes so when I’m in deep snow and stuck I will use 4 low auto or snow to try and crawl out but since I don’t have a locker it doesn’t work the best. So before I get stuck I tend to use sand mode because it somewhat disables that limited slip system that uses braking to try and get traction and allows the wheels to spin freely which can help you get through some of the thick stuff. But once you’re stuck it won’t help. You’ll just dig deeper. So you have to feel it out. If you have seen any of my shorts where I’m plowing through untouched deep snow I’m in sand mode. It wouldn’t work in snow or auto especially with the v6

Great vid man! Curious what ride mode you’re using in those sloppy conditions? And what tire pressure are you running? Unless I missed that in the vid somewhere!

You missed it in the video haha. That’s okay. For drive mode it just depends on if I need more umpf sometimes I’ll be in sand mode so my wheels can spin freely. But when we were cruising through the thickness uphill I put it in 4 low sand mode. I started at 17 psi then once we hit snow I went to 12. Once I got stuck real bad I went to 9psi.

I guess no traction boards to help raise Jeep and get traction!!?? That was sketch. Reminds me of a 3 hour mud bog recovery. Thought we were gonna be stuck in the woods all night.

We had traction boards. I even put a bottle jack under them. Everything just kept sinking. I know in the video the trail looked packed down but it was still so soft. The slightest movement would cause it to sink

Most of the day I was at 12psi. I dropped it to 9psi trying to get more traction

You could have gone even lower in that deep snow if you have a compressor to air back up.

The recovery point failure is concerning! Do you know if the strap you where using earlier in the day was a polyester tow strap...or more of a nylon recovery strap? The polyester straps have very limited stretch and could have contributed to damaging the recovery point. The tow hook failing on a single line winch pull is pretty bad.

I know that the line earlier was a flat style kinetic rope. It had a good amount of stretch as you might be able to see in the video. But it belonged to Mike I’d have to ask what it’s made of. RC makes their hooks out of a cast which I don’t think holds up well. Or maybe it can fall victim to cold weather over time. Not sure. But it could have killed someone. I don’t even know where the end of it flew off to.

@@GrandExploration Yup, a very concerning failure for sure. I would double check on the strap stuff....not a ton of flat straps are made from Nylon and are still marketed as 'kinetic'. Polyester vs Nylon is about a 3x different in elongation. Be careful out there.

@@JesseCase. Haha The wk2 wasn’t my first choice. I didn’t go out looking to make mine an off-road rig but it ended up being a cool niche and I’ve built it to do a lot. Even more since this video. And I do love it. I have surprised a lot of yota and Jeep guys

@@GrandExploration They definitely are far more capable than some people want to give them credit for. I've already started building on mine. My rock sliders are supposed to be delivered tomorrow. I definitely plan to get the most out of it and take it out to play and camp. Plus I needed something that was capable of towing and a Grand Cherokee will handle the type of stuff I'll be towing with no problem.

Naw we don’t run snow chains. The problem really is t grip. I mean not really. It’s mostly lift. I have a 3” lift but the snow was still too deep and it caused me to get high centered where the wheels couldn’t really touch the ground. I was mainly looking for my tires to grip the traction boards

@@GrandExploration In Europe, Greece specifically , you are required by law to have in your trunk from October 1st to April 30, regardless of weather conditions, a set of snow chains. A reason there must be! ;-) E safe! I enjoy your videos tremendously and have watched your progress from your initial tentative steps with interest! Kudos!
