I think the relationship between the villain and the two sisters is pretty interesting. This could have been good with a couple rewrites... and half the number of songs

He hit the nail on the head about Marianne and Bog in his review. These two are the only ones that I liked in the movie. They really looked like they had chemistry. Everything else was pretty bad. But the character designs I thought looked interesting for the fairies and Bog King

I have heard of this movie. And I like the fact that Doug is wearing the shirt of Tom and Jerry. That shows us that he’s ready for the new movie.

I feel like there's the potential for a really good kids movie here, it's just... buried under bad decisions.

This movie is like spicy food. It's painful, but the pain amplifies the good moments that make you come back for more (at least for me) Edit: Looking back on this a year later, it kinda sounds like something a masochist would say lol (I'm not one btw)

Honestly this movie is a guilty pleasure of mine, I know it's not good but I still enjoy some of the songs (they can be well sung) and I really like the relationship that develops between the Bog king and Marianne

I work at a movie theatre and I remember cleaning the movie theatre seats while Strange Magic was playing with no one in it and I watched the whole movie while cleaning seats.

The Bug King is the only thing that makes this film worth seeing

I'm not going to lie I do love the idea of the heroine falling in love with the villain (or rather the anti-hero if he doesn't do anything particulary villainous) but if they had cut the jukebox musical numbers, made the fae more unique in terms of how their world works and have Marianne meet the Bog King earlier on and cut the idea of Marianne devloping into a stronger woman by acting and looking more "punkish," she should either have been punkish from the start or girly all the way through, not a sudden dramatic change barely 3 minutes in, this could have been a better movie. Also, the Bog King is probably the best character of the film because of his design and facial expressions and the fact that they actually tried to give him funny lines. Although for a story building him up as evil and unloveable I'm always reminded of the existence of tumblr and some of the crushes girls have on there, and with angular features and blue eyes you would think he would have had some faeries chasing him all those years. Edit: Are our accents really that hard to understand? 😅 I suppose given the setting he could be both the Bog and the Bug King.

The Bog King looks like the Monarch from Venture Bros. if he was dragged through mud then suffered severe burns

Oh look, Rob Walker has grown a beard throughout the pandemic with his brother not having glasses nor a hat but still has a beard.

This isn't a "Lucas" movie. All he did was write the story, he didn't write the screenplay.

Last time I was so early stamps.com didn't have Doug to advertise it

I never heard of this till it was randomly on telly and ended up watching it . Its bizarre. The animation is undeniably gorgeous but there's WAY too many songs. It's practically a full musical with no dialogue. But I gotta say it's oddly compelling and I really liked the bad guys story arc. Ya don't often see a villain get undone by love. And it was reciprocated to boot.

So something odd just happened. I saw this and literally clapped and said "Oooh First Viewing"...I'm a 35 year old man...and I clapped and said "Oooh" with excitement.

"Ah'm the Borg King, and ye will be assimilated."

They're actually not lying about the film killing Touchstone. This pretty much killed any chance of it surviving, as at this point it was strictly what they used to release films they didn't deem to belong under any other Disney banner. I.e., they released a good amount of DreamWorks live action films, and they released Gnomeo and Juliet because they kept it when they sold off Miramax, yet didn't feel it deserved a Disney branding (to the point it was rumoured they sold the sequel rights to Paramount for the Indiana Jones distribution rights- it probably wasn't, but that sounds like a move Paramount would be dumb enough to do.) Honestly, it was a bit telling that Fox 21 Television was renamed Touchstone Television... literally right before they just decided to fold it into 20th Television outright. Really, between its deliberate downsizing and the overall lack of interest, one has to wonder if somebody at Touchstone bullied Iger as a kid, because he seemed hellbent on making sure the company was killed.

Robs face when Doug laughs at the big monster running away from the small one is the same face i give when my mom asks if the liver and onions tastes good.

I legit thought the guy was going to say “Bring Me Thanos!”

Haven't done these in a while - Always a treat to see these First Viewings. You two play so well off each other! Picking out where Doug picked up material for the review adds a sort of Meta to the whole thing. Cheers Rob and Doug!

Shrek + Frozen (Daughters) + Generic Fantasy Theme+ Valentine Day= this movie Anyone else didn't like the part were Marianne almost look like she was voring us rather then singing up close? If this ever was dumb enough to revive It with sequel to a TV Series of no reason at all I'm truly gonna burn this place to the ground with Dingodile's Flamethrower.

At first, I didn't know what to make of this movie, but when I gave it a second chance, none of the stuff I didn't like mattered, and all the stuff I liked stood out. I absolutely adore this movie, I think it's a masterpiece, and I don't care who knows it.

I can't believe Strange Magic ripped off Epic!, you know I thought they would do a first viewing of that.

Rob: So you know how we're annoyed with the songs, because we're adults... Those are probably the only things entertaining the kids... Me, a 30 year old woman: I... feel a bit... attacked right now... XD Maybe it's because I went into this movie with the understanding that it was just a mediocre jukebox musical with a simple plot... But I enjoyed the animation, and liked hearing and singing along with the covers of these songs... and laughing at the cheesiness... I had fun watching this movie... Sometimes you don't want the deep, inspirational, innovative, thought-provoking, well-told story... Sometimes you just want a simple plot and random pop songs to sing or hum along with while you sit back and try to decompress after a long day of work, bills, problem-solving, and general adulting... You know?

This movie is sort of a guilty pleasure fore me. I saw it before I saw frozen and I like how they made the Disney prince the villen and the Disney villen the good guy in the end. Again this was before I saw frozen.

As a guy who had to wear a dress for A Midsummer's Night Dream, I don't approve of this movie.

Remember, THIS, Star War Kinect, and Phantom Menace's "3D" re-release were all made by Lucas BEFORE the Disney buyout, and he still insists that we're all idiots for "not getting" the prequels!

They said that all the funny moments had nothing to do with the songs, but they laughed at the Can’t Help My Self reprise and the comment complaining about all the singing Granted that’s only two

The pop songs annoy me but I do enjoy the animation to a certain degree. The designs are kind of creepy but the actual animation is very smooth and flows very nicely a lot of the time.

I read somewhere that Lucas first decided on the songs he wanted to be in a movie and then wrote the story. So its pretty much like a mixtape and the Barbie Fairytopia movies got a LOVEchild. Anyways, I love this movie so much. But I love Love LOVE musicals.
