These kind of videos are actually super SUPER important for our community. It's all the little nuances that are not mentioned in spec sheets or never mentioned or brought up in a review that can actually be significant sources of frustration for the user that can make it a deal breaker. For example, I have a friend who shoots the Z6II (a retired professional) whilst I still do weddings and events with Fuji. I had no idea the playback review (with flash at least) was so slow on the Z6II (he never mentioned it), and now that I see it in comparison with the Fuji system it just makes me appreciate even more the X System. This would probably be a deal breaker for me if I was on the Z6II and if someone showed me what you just demonstrated here with the Fuji and I was a Z6II user I would be pretty bummed. Heck my aging Pentax K-1 from 2016 instant reviews quicker than the Z6II, wth Nikon?! These things can REALLY matter in the field and on the job. Spec sheets only tell half the story, they are boasting points and seldom mention a neg. It's one thing to list of what a camera can do it's quite another thing to show how those things have been implemented and whether it works well or not in reality. You're absolutely right, there is no perfect camera, they all have quirks. Thankfully for me with Fuji I have not really had a deal breaker moment yet with the system. Great video Omar. Next video... to be fair and balanced do your pet hates on the X system :D

Probably because I've only been a Nikon shooter, the hit "OK" to change thing is completely normal to me. pretty sure this is the way their digital cameras have always been. I like it, as, it's harder to accidentally mess up a setting. The callus? That's just because you're weird. 😅

That thumbnail got me right away, love it! When I first got my Z6, the OK button confirm thing really threw me off too for a while, I’ve gotten pretty used to it now though. Also the touch screen thing has me putting my focus point on some weird corner from hitting it with my shirt, which is a pain since I usually use the smaller focus points and it takes a while to get it back where I want it. Very weird stuff, but it’s amazing how quickly you adapt to these kinds of things when it’s your main camera. Of course, when you’re shooting two or three other systems at the same time… ;) Great vid.

You are dead right about the screen turning off. Mine always did it at the worst times, just like you, I worked out it is that little 'nipple' thing hanging down. What I do is quickly grab the rubber eye-piece and remove it, then whack it back on - that usually fixes it up. It's a shame you ran out of function buttons. As you say, you can turn off all the information and have a blank screen (it also gives a blank EVF at the same time). This is marvellous and so liberating. After I've set everything and have confirmed my info, I hit my assigned button and all information disappears and I can just concentrate on what is in my photo. I also moved the OK button for bringing up that little box, to an assigned front button and it works a treat. I also use back-button AF on my Nikon but not on my Fuji X-T3

The reason why the Z6 ii is different then Z9 when it comes to playback, is that there is a dedicated processor / process that sends the image to the card and the view finder at the same time. This allows it to write and show the image at the same time. On the Z6 ii there is a delay because the write process goes through one channel to the card and the view finder. The image delay is a feature of the Z6 and Z7.

Weirdly, the Zf has fast image review on the LCD, but is noticeably slower to enter image review in the viewfinder.

Canon cameras also require you hit the "Set" button or tap "Set/OK" on the screen to confirm a changed setting. To me it's smart, not weird, to ensure you don't change a setting by accident. My own pet peeve about the R5 is that the top LED displays the camera's last general setting (C1, M, TV, etc.) even when turned off. That drains the battery, as I confirmed just now when checking the menu function on my R5 that I last used a week ago.

You can set one of the function buttons to go to My Menu, add the most used quick menu features to the to and then you can just push the navigation arrow to the right to confirm any selection.

I am curious as I was always taught to never change lenses with power on for dust reasons, and when I forget and change it with power I have a ton more specs. Having a Z6ii myself, is it okay to do that or do you have event photography reasons to leave power on?

I tried a Z6 II in a camera shop last week - It was uncomfortable to hold compared with my D750. I hope the new Z8 will be roughly D750 size. Im holding out for Z8 in the hope that 10 bit will be in it. Other bonus would be sensor cover and better AF.
@jacksonjackson9474

I sort of like the way it feels in the hand, but i know i'm probably in the minority there. The AF is much improved with the latest firmware updates so that camera shop may not have updated yet. And YES, i would love a sensor cover for my Z6ii. The Z9 has one.

Lol , I had the dust in the viewer issue too . You can set the record button to clear the viewfinder in photo mode . I use flash often and I don’t really notice the delay you mention , it’s almost imperceptible. Sounds like you just need to get more familiar with the camera and more lotion!

Fun video Omar, thanks! What camera are you shooting the video with? The AF was excellent (Finger shots). I'd love to see a "My favorite system for..." video from you! Also I'd love a review with the A7iv and Z6ii from your perspective. The Z6ii was a... "stop-gap" camera for me to see what platform I'd jump on and the A7iv was what I was expecting to get when it launched, but I was a bit underwhelmed by some of it's specs (Screen Rez!). Fuji has also been in the running, and the X-H2S looks phenomenal, but it's always the lenses that pull me back to Sony (and the customization). The Tamron/Sigma offerings are so good at the moment. The 3-way rear screen is also a huge factor for me. Everyone has their preference along that polarizing topic, but most of my landscape and Americana work utilize extreme angles for out of the ordinary compositions and I need the screen placement choices. After a year using the Z6ii, I'm still in love with Nikon's colors like I've always been, but it's still far more.... fiddly to get what I want than the A7iii I had rented.

Re: the menu selection. You can press OK or to the RIGHT on the Dpad to select it which IMO is more natural. It works like that on Nikon DSLR's too. I personally prefer to have the selection confirmation. Also, I set the movie record button to live view info display off when in stills. What are you using the rec. button for?
@steviejsmall
@steviejsmall 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Omar, regarding a clean display when photographing, you can get that but you have to set it up in Controls via the Custom Settings Menu and it’s only selectable for Fn1, Fn2, AF-ON, Sub-Selector Center Press or Movie Record Button. I set it up in the Sub Selector Center Press myself. What you need to do to activate/test: Go to f2: Custom Controls and select one of the above mentioned buttons, then you’ll want to scroll to an option that says Live view info display off and assign it. Now when you’re out and about, you can press whichever button you assigned and get a clean out. Can set it up in Video too using Custom Controls g2 if you want. I use the Sub Selector Center Press for that too, FYI. Hope that helps!
@steviejsmall
@steviejsmall 2 жыл бұрын
Should have kept watching instead of pressing pause…you do know about it but have all your buttons assigned….guess that serves me right ha. Agree that the assignable buttons are limited but most will put it on Movie Record or Sub-Selector Center Press as those tend not to be used for anything critical. Carry on and good video!

Hello Omar, thanks for your video and all the great work. I suffer the same issues on my z6 ii. About the delay when you use flash, I think this is a general issue. It takes near a second to show the image you have just taken, regardless if you use flash or not. I don´t understand why needs so much time. Maybe it writes first to the card and then it shows on the back display ? But you can just remove your cards and take a pic, it is the same. I switched to nikon z this years and I´m quite happy with it, but my old camera with slow sd cards had instant review. I hope Nikon release a new firmware and fix all this issues. Regards.

Fun video. Using nothing but Nikon I have experienced most of those quirks, but a didn't notice them much as quirks (apart from the rear LCD being off when it's supposed to be on, but that's a one time experience, afterwards you know how to deal with it). Instead of quirks it just becomes part of how the thing functions. And yes, I do have those shots of my shoes as well, think it's the bare elbow. I always walk around town with the cam on and hanging from the shoulder and end result are shoes shots. Sometimes it's funny, actually. Wouldn't be surprised if someone will turn it into art one day...

@joeltunnah
@joeltunnah 2 жыл бұрын
That’s the problem: a “small prime”. If you are ok with 28 or 40mm, you’re all set. Otherwise the f/1.8 S Nikkor lenses are pretty big, almost ridiculously so, like Sigma glass. Adapting manual lenses doesn’t help because the FTZ adapter makes the total length the same as the f/1.8 S primes. The body itself is the same size as my micro4/3 G9, so no worries there. If size is your main concern I wouldn’t buy a full frame system other than a Leica if you’re rich.🤑

@@joeltunnah Yeah, the only thing that looks minimalistic (or at least low-key ) on the Z6 is the little Voigtlander the Leigh and Raymond demonstrated. I've been happy with mft from Oly, 1 inch Sonys, and aps Fujis, and feel like it is time to have the ff experience. But I don't need to make a living with it and don't want a huge camera. Maybe it's time to go with a used Sigma fp with the funky viewfinder...

@@earlfenwick that’s the frustrating thing about full frame mirrorless… they aren’t huge cameras at all, in fact they’re quite compact. It’s the damn lenses. I do street and documentary type photography, and I’m very close to selling off my Z6ii and just continuing on with my two Panasonics, G9 and G95. If I have to buy f/4 zooms, and f/2 or f/2.8 primes for the full frame just to keep it reasonably sized, what have I gained?

An annoyance for me. I shoot the Z7II. I don’t shoot auto iso very often. You cannot set this to a function button. No easy way to change minimum shutter speed in auto iso. You cannot put it on the quick menu. In continuous focus the focus area does not go green. The viewfinder triggers with rain drops. I got bemused with that when I first had the camera. I agree with you is where are the firmware upgrades for the Z6ii & Z7II. We seem to be forgotten. Errrrrrrrrrr.

Nicky the best workaround I’ve found for changing auto ISO minimum shutter speed somewhat quickly is putting “ISO Sensitivity Settings” at the top of your “MY MENU”, then set one of your function buttons to “Access top item in MY Menu”. This is yet another case where my Panasonic G9 gets it right. You can program one of the d-pad directions to go straight to the minimum shutter speed setting.

Changing the auto ISO settings is somewhat involved (as mentioned above by Joel), but turning auto ISO on or off is extremely easy: ISO button + front dial

@@ogonzilla Bummer for me too. Thankfully the Z 9 allows for that but has to be turned on. Hope that trickles down to future generations going forward as it’s been explained to me that prior Z cameras to the Z 9 can’t do that.

I was wondering if anyone had seen this or if it was just something that I was doing. every once in awhile I either hit something or the focus peaking turns itself on without doing anything and the only way I have found to get it off is to turn the camera off and back on. sometimes several times. anyone else?

Totally could’ve added that one! Lol. It’s when you bump the focus wheel on the lens it goes to manual focus. Happens at the worst times.

Agree with all your quirks except the palm rash thingy - far too much info Omar!!!🤣🤣🤣 I think the delay in playback drives me nuts the most. Sometimes the camera just seems generally slow to start up and turn on the screen. A bit annoying. Apart from that I just accept everything is the way Nikon have purposely made this camera to work and I'm fine with it. But good to hear you point all these things out because now I know it's just not me. This is surprisingly reassuring for me. Good work!

Nobody is perfect 😉It would be rather easy to fix all these minor quirks, and without them, yes, this camera would nearly be a perfect one 😇 I love it for almost everything: It's ergonomics, the funcionality, and of course the quality of the images it produces.

Thank you for the SHOUTOUT Omar. I really appreciate it. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼 I have to agree with you at some of the quirks on the Z6. They really should make a clean view feature cycling thru the display modes. When shooting vertical sometimes. I really don't want to see the info at the bottom there. It's annoying. Firmware firmware firmware NIKON!!! All signs point to you getting a Z9 brother. No more calluses . :) Keep on rockin man. BTW love your sense of humor. .. ROCK N ROLL!!!!!!!!

Haha you have different problems than me. I have fat short fingers. You have long slim fingers. So using the front 2 buttons for me is kind of a pain, but they are very useful I just have to always re adjust my grip to use them. So that gets annoying. But I've never had a Calais on my hand from the grip, that's pretty weird... But I have more manly hands so I'm used to rough grips 😉 (lifting weights) But I don't hold a camera for hours. I'm a get to my subject, shoot, and go! I don't have much free time these days haha.
