Two weeks back, on a remote river float with little traffic, we were fishing the holes at our evening campsite. A group of 4 rafts came through and fished each hole like we weren’t even there. Taking their time at each spot we were fishing. We were laughing about it, shaking our heads and pissed, all at the same time. They should watch this video. Odds are it’ll go right over there heads though.

Then it's time to tie on a 2 or 3 hook pike streamer and start making double haul casts right up their ass. It usually is enough dissuade moderately sober people in inflatables and convince them to keep moving downstream. If they want to get belligerent or aggressive, the Glock 17 I keep in a very visible shoulder holster while fishing is a pretty effective deterrent to such tom-foolery in the more remote places I fish. I've actually destroyed an inflatable in this way and for the people I marooned, it was a very long walk out on a gravel road without any kind of cell-coverage (23.6 miles). People can be dicks to me if they want to be. It is advisable however, before they begin, to make damn sure I can't be an even bigger dick. What can I say? I'm a jerk.

That's great, as I am not a purist fly fishermen, I probably spend time on a spin rod and fly rod equally 50/50 its really not cool the way people act towards me just because I'm holding a different set up then they are. Sometimes I'll hit the river real early with my spin rod fish a run downstream and walk back to the truck and grab my fly set up. On the way to my truck I get dirty looks and people shaking there heads, then I return with a fly rod and all the sudden they are nice. Don't judge the style of there fishermen judge them on how they act and what they know on the river. It's just sad that there is a lot of division, we don't need that now a days fishermen are fishermen. But not all spin casters are beer belly havin sitting in a chair with worms and killing everything they catch and leaving trash on the bank. A lot of them just like the style better and some of them can out fly fish me any day of the week.

@@HugeFlyFisherman What's wrong with using both lol? I fish both ways. I'm not afraid to throw a big lure out if it means catching a 20lb brown. I enjoy fly fishing, I enjoy all types of fishing, my dad lives in Cabo I do a lot of surf fishing tournaments down there. After spin casting into huge waves and ruff water with 13' rods I learned a lot and got a better appreciation of spinning with artificial lures. Its a challenge to hook up to a big smart trout on a 4" Rapala with one barbless hook on it. I love throwing big streamers to and dry's it just depends I like options...

@@82rocksolid This is actually a valid point, and after years seeing both I have the following (somewhat complicated) perspective to share. I grew up fly fishing catch and release in many of the spots old boy here fishes. Some of my most fond memories were of Tuck Squire in Cheeseman Canyon telling me I had good catch and release "etiquette" because I didn't take the fish out of the water. Now, I help with a nonprofit that uses adaptive spinning equipment for individuals with spinal cord injuries as we haven't gotten to the point of replicating the fly casting motion -- it's really quite complex when variables like wind and placement are accounted for. I have seen some of our able bodied family and friends of guests catch some big fish on a section we float that is well known as a mecca for fly fisherman. It's big enough water that the lines won't get hung up and the fish won't get "put down" by a plunking lure. Having an 8 year old girl be able to cast and catch a big fish with a rapala on a guppy rod where I struggle as a seasoned fly fisherman -- I have no problem with this. She wouldn't be out there on the water, and that child will forever have a unique connection with that place and want to protect it. She'll fish maybe 1 hour of the day and play the rest. These fish are so used to seeing midges and fly fishing technique that they aren't used to lures -- and they respond readily to them. Herein lies the problem. After a couple of years watching fish and their interactions with both spinners and fly gear, I have seen more fish killed on our boat by seasoned spin casters with single lure rapalas than in my 30+ years of fly fishing. It's just a fact, I have seen it happen, and it kills me every time. The sets are harder, and if it's a bluff then the false hooks are far more severe. If you're catching and keeping -- go for it. But false hooking the side of a beautiful catch and release fish in managed water with a hard set should be, at a minimum, a day in jail if I had things my way. I lived in Europe for years, and these fish just don't exist out there. These critters have so much pressure that we, at a minimum, owe them the respect of keeping it a gentleman's game. A lot of people put a lot of time into creating and managing that fishery (Tuck Squire spent his entire life). If it's a kid who gets one fish on a large river in a day, and we're quick to get it off the line and it's hooked cleanly... then OK (we also replace all of the treble hooks with single hooks). If it's a vet who has one arm and it's his only shot at getting on the water and catching something -- great! But to the guy in the canyon who caught 100 fish (and I saw him drag a massive 20+" Brownie side hooked to the net) -- go back to Cabo and huck there. He only did that well because there aren't 200,000+ use days with lures instead of flies. If it's his own honey hole and nobody knows about it, and that's how he connects with the place -- then great! There's a time and a place (something our culture doesn't seem to care about), and that's why I'm giving you the dirty look on the way back to the truck. We get occasional dirty looks on the river, and I know some of the guides, but for our clientele it may be their last chance to get out and ever catch a fish. If we're in Cabo, then I'll join you and let's throw a fish on the grill! I honestly don't fish that much for pleasure any more as even fly hooks mutilate. Case in point: any fish over 20" on any tailwater in Colorado. But, that's after 1,000's of fisherman had their crack, and that connection is more important for the long term preservation of these places than the thousands of city folk who never get out. A long winded answer, but I hope it gives some perspective as to why that rift exists and how it changes, at least for me, by enjoyment of a place.

@@tywheeler7131 Hmm, yeah idk why so many of your fish are dying. Spinners will deff. kill fish. The flashing and the size of the spinner make the fish hit hard and thats a small target. Honestly for every 100 fish I catch I can say 99 to 100 of em swim off with no harm done. When I spin fish I use big Rapalas, never use spinners I find that boring and not much talent required. I use inline VMC barbless hooks, I probably actually hook up to maybe 30% of the fish that bite the lure. When I do hook up its normally a pretty hard hit and the hook ends up right in the corner of their mouth. Just because your fish are dying doesn't mean mine are. I also don't eat trout not ever, If I wanna eat fish I'll grab some Tuna or Wahoo out of my freezer. When fishing in Cabo we tag and release all Billfish no matter what size, as I am a lifetime Member of The Billfish Foundation! We tag fish for studies and do a lot of great things for them. I release all Rooster Fish, Jacks, and any other species that is small or very large. I release the smaller fish because I want them to grow, I release the bigger fish because I respect how long they have survived and I want that Gene pool to keep going! I hate to see a nice trout on a stringer trust me I have the same feelings. If I thought I was harming the Trout I catch when I do fish with a spin rod then I wouldn't use a spin rod on them at all! I've caught Browns over 20# and released them and had old timer fly fishermen ask me why I didn't keep that fish "It's a once and a lifetime fish". My reply "I let it go so someone, someday, might get a chance at that same life time fish". As far as the stink eye goes leave that shit at home, this world is messed up enough. Who wants to spend their time on the water getting angry look for no reason? I don't have that feeling when I'm on the water I respect everyone that floats past me and every person I walk up to I greet with a smile and ask them how they are doing. I love fly fishing but some of these cry babies need to find a different sport. Feel like I'm fishing with a bunch of snowflakes! Back in the day fly fishermen where tuff, and well mannered. Now people act the same way on the water as they do when their stuck in traffic or something. It's sad and pathetic at the same time! But what do I know, I'm just an ol' Cowboy that rode bulls for to long I guess, maybe I have Brain damage....

When I am fishing on lakes or ponds from my kayak, I always go around the bank fishermen, just because I have a watercraft doesn't mean that I own the whole place. I wish more people were like me in giving bank fishermen room. Ive had encounters where the boat iceholes thought that they could go anywhere, ice picks do wonders on boat trailer tires & they only carry 1 spare tire, not 2...

Hey man, just found your channel... I like it.. subbed... I am with you... give me my space and I will never step in and fish around another fisherman's spot. ..oh and if I am fishing a pool, standing in the river... we are not playing golf... it's not... no, it ain't ok to fish "through". GET OUT OF THE WATER AND WALK AROUND ME, AT LEAST 50 YARDS. And if my jeep is parked on the side of the river, it's not an indication or an invitation to park and walk down and ask if I mind you fishing in the same spot. Park your vehicle and walk a ways ahead or behind me... preferably out of sight...and be quiet, I know you are happy to be going fishing but I don't want to hear you whistle the Andy Griffith song all morning long. Oh, and I don't need you to come by and yell out to me....ain't it a great day to be alive? Ok,..... now let's go catch some fish...wait...one more thing... I am not your valet or butler, if you are upstream from me don't drop your sandwich bag in the water and let it float my way and expect me to catch and carry out for you..... I am going to do that but, on my way out I may stuff your trash up your exhaust pipe about 2 feet...Ok.... Noooow lets go catch some fish.... please.

In a world full of nerds and men wearing high heels you should try to help that person not just be there to give them a hard time, maybe they weren't lucky like us and had no one to teach them how to fish and the do's and don'ts... Stream fishing with a friend I find the tout system is the best. One person starts to fish at the obvious place one would start to fish. The second person walks gently parallel to and following the stream as far away that is reasonable not to disturb the Virgin water. Once the second person who has walked and established distance whether that's a half a mile, a mile, 2 Miles or just 100 yards, etc. That person ties a bandana (tout) or shirt or whatever (a pink ribbon if that suits your fancy) that is not permanent to a tree limb to mark for the first fisherman where they began fishing on virgin water. Now the first person knows that they are no longer fishing virgin water they can walk and catch up to the second person.

Sarcastic Humor helps. One area where I disagree is the 15 ft distance. When I see another fisherman I give way more space. 15 ft would be a BIG intrusion, I have been FF for a long time. With so many more fisherman, some really don’t care. Even some guides will push the limit. As you said there are many spots to fish a stream!

People who hike or walk with dogs near great fishing places seem to have the universally worst etiquette about controlling their animals. The worst experience, but one of many for my wife and me, was when we had finally reached a fantastic series of glacial ponds connected by a stream with pure-strain, wild Golden Trout in the Beartooths of Montana last July (still lots of snow and partial ice cover on the ponds). Locating this place took us years of research, and getting there demanded ten hours of hiking, and early on the morning of our first full day of fishing on the biggest of the ponds, a HUGE dog ran up the bank without us noticing and splashed into where our lines were, heading right for us. The fact that we were in grizzly, mountain lion, and wolf country and a full day's hike from even a logging road, that dog was very lucky we didn't pump a few .357 rounds into it before we recognized it as not being a bear or wolf. As the mutt splashed through the ONE stream inlet on the whole pond where all the Goldens were stacked up and then jumped up on us with its filthy paws tearing flies off of our vests and tangling our lines, the hippies hiking with it about 75 yards back shouted "it's okay, he's friendly." We told them in no uncertain terms that we didn't care, and to keep their animal under control and on a leash (untethered stock is illegal in that wilderness area), after which it took the Goldens about an hour to recongregate where we were fishing. By evening, when that loose hellhound jumped on us for the third time - either swimming through our fishing spot or ambushing us from the rocks above the stream inlet trying to either jump on us or steal our jerky, we both whole-heartedly regretted not shooting it on its first approach, when we could have reasonably claimed we took it for an attacking bear or wolf.

A point you didn't mentioned is "When you catch a fish, don't scream my name". I sometimes fish with a guy who calls out my name every time he hooks a fish. So annoying!

Etiquette videos should be a prerequisite to fishing in general. Got a stream burned by a family last time I was out, the dad was carrying a fly rod so I expected him to have a little more experience with this. Guy fished right down to the bend just upstream of me, then decided to take his family and leave but instead of cutting out to the trail, he walked back upstream right along the bank. Mind you this is on a 10ft wide spring creek.

Always like the people who wade fish at the boat ramp and give you the WTF look when you are taking out and they are in the way and you are about ready to run into them or you are putting in and they are just down stream of you right where you have to go to get off the ramp . But like you I am a Huge fly fisherman and like you I politely ask them WTF are you thinking standing there it’s a boat ramp that’s why all the boats are here :-)

I agree about the most important thing being to give you room, but I would urge everyone to err on the side of overcommunication. I'm not sure it's really great advice to say that you should decide to not talk to someone because of body language. How can you read someone's body language when they're nymphing in waders anyway? I would say that it's fine to approach people and talk to them and say "do you mind if I fish over here?" I think it's important to encourage interaction, communication, and relationship building over avoidance, aversion, and solitude. Many good fishing holes can accommodate two anglers, and it's much more enjoyable if the two people actually talk to each other and get along rather than just get out of each others way. Friendships can be made this way and it can help avoid conflict when one person is catching fish and the other isn't.

I had a question for ya bud. I been fishing small mountains freestone streams of late. Found a nice mountain system a hour drive from me so i been able to get out after work instead of driveing 2 1/2 hour drive every weekend to the mountains. But, i have been having series problems hooking these fish on dries for some reason. They are tiny streams with awsome pools every 50 to 75 yards the whole way up. But, super spooky so i have to creep up the center of the creek and make longer than normal cast into the tailouts of these pools. But the current is taking my slack to quik and my line is laid out to straight when they hit. Any recommendations for me bud?

Guide boats in Montana are the worst. Most won't yield to waders and will fish through your water. There are a few who will ask If you want them to go behind you but very few. Anymore I will just get out of the river and let them by.

Regarding boat vs wader etiquette. If you fish for salmon or steelhead in the PNW, realize that proper etiquette when encountering bait anglers bank fishing is to get your boat as close to them as possible so you don't spook the fish in the hole their fishing out in the middle of the river. This is in contradiction to the fly fishing etiquette where we often swing a fly and hang it close to shore and expect boats to take the route furthest from us. So just keep that in mind if a boat that's gear fishing sees you and comes right up to you. They think they are following proper etiquette.

I have had more rude fly fisherman float right in to a hole that I’m fishing than any one else,I float down to a spot bank my boat and then work an area.More than once a fly guid comes down and anchors or back rows the hole I’m standing in,total tools. My younger brother got fed up with this guy after the third time and we asked him to give us some space.we move and he came along and parked in front of us,he let him go in front of us and then later we caught up to him and lost control of his boat and ran into this guy, after that the dude gave us plenty of space

So I’m new to fly fishing on the river and yesterday I was hitting the last shore spot on the way home and there was a drift boat who was guiding two other anglers about 500yds upstream. They were landing a fish and pulling over to the bank again about 500yds upstream. I parked up where they could see me and I was thinking I’ll wait for them to deal with their fish and then come down through the hole. I waiting 30 minutes and they were still dinking around with their first catch. I decided to just go ahead and fish the little side stream and caught a fish on my third cast. As I’m unhooking it the dude’s in the boat float by and he says to me “thanks” and I responded “for what”. He said I low holed him but wouldn’t explain what I did. I thought I was fine because I left the main back Eddy alone and this is the coeur d’ Alene river so it’s pretty busy.

That’s bullshit. He should have yielded to the wading angler. In a boat he has access to much more water. He could have fished the other side.

Personally for my self if I see another angler I just jet somewhere else or to private property. I also believe if another angler see me he should try somewhere else well that’s how it works here in Aus or at the bottom of the code you’ll walk 3-4miles upstream and well and truly away from the water so the angler isn’t fishing disbursed water.
