Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte is waging a brutal war on drugs. Thousands of people have already died at the hands of the police, including children.
The populist president has ordered the country’s security forces to kill anyone that they think is connected to the drugs trade. Minors have also suffered under the crackdown. Some children have been inadvertently killed during drugs raids, while others have become police targets. Most come from the poorest sections of society. The film makers accompany street children trying to survive on the streets of the capital Manila. They meet adults who are trying to help, but also encounter the forces persecuting the children.

I met an orphan 15 year old Filipino in the Provence of Antique 5 years ago. Me Heart went out to him. Before I left back to Canada I got him a cell phone and a place to live and got him back into school. He’s now 21 and in University. My only Prayer is that the people of the Philippines can also help these children. Children are Great Imitators so we should give them Something Great to Imitate...... the Love and Kindness for the less fortunate ❤️🙏

A little fact for the people watching that are non-native Tagalog speakers: During their interviews the children are still using formal Tagalog. Notice how they add "po" and "opo" in the middle of their statements. In Tagalog, those terms connote respect given by younger people when talking to their elders. These children have lots of potential and I really do hope our government will give them the chance to unleash those potential.

I grew up in Cameroon and used to think our lives were hard but we didn't have to live in shacks. We never lacked food and we had access to clean drinking water, good hospitals and went to school. These are basic things which sadly are lacking for most of these Filipino kids. I was raised in a mountain tribe in the Philippines. In our culture, it is required to butcher 10 pigs and feed the entire village in a span of several days. So you also have to prepare other dishes. There isn't much space in the mountains so I guess our culture evolved to ensure that our numbers stay manageable. It also reflects in our psyche, we spend most of our youth working and not really into relationships. There is a meme about my people where a tribesman's wife ask him to tie her and do anything he wants. So he did and went back to work on his farm undisturbed. I was surprised by how horny lowlanders are when I studied in the city. They go into relationships in highschool. They constantly talk about sex openly. It was a culture shock.

They actually get government subsidies but alot also doesn't know how or want to do paper work. Some of them also were given a house, but they sell it, buy drugs and go back to their old dirty houses. The government subsidies tho have a condition, the parents needs to make sure to send their kids to school and they are tracked. Many poor parents thinks it is too complicated and some failed to comply. You don't know much about our culture. We still have indigenous people who do not even know what poverty is until the western ideas of what is poor and rich reached them. Don't you know we have indigenous people who's part of Christmas tradition is go to the city and beg? What do you do about it? Lol. There are also indigenous who doesn't want a home because they considered everywhere, especially the sea as their home. It is a complicated society with many culture after all. Example we wanted to give houses to the indigenous community but the design of the houses are more modern and more climate resilient, but they complaint. We are a young nation trying to meet half way with so many cultures involved.

It's something rooted in the psyche too. Even addicts and street adults run away from rehabilitation centers too. Those who have actually completed their time in rehab relapse and return to old habits, get worse, get arrested, and the cycle continues. Unless these people (even kids) actually want the change for themselves, the cycle will not end. Those kids don't want to leave the life they already knew or used to, or they aren't ready to live a different life - live in a different home, lifestyle, and know people who live in a different world from the one they always knew. Edit: I see, you were referring to 22:20. I'm sorry, I was wrong. I agree with you after hearing what the boy said. I think those Youth Centers adopt the same environment and management that you'd see in prison for adults. And Boy's Town managed by psychopathic officers too

The governement governement didnt put a gun to parents head to have 5+ children when they (parents) can't feed themselves. Look yourself. Over population and the Roman Catholic church and the reproductive health bill. And just past August 2019, Social Emergency on teen pregnancies.

We kept to ourselves and minded our own business, worked hard. A little common sense and some discipline goes a long way. You don't need an education to have those 2 traits. It's a shame a lot of people here don't have a vision and a journey. Just anak pa more and "bahala na / okay lang / pwede na / my life is in Gods hands attitude *waiting* for blessings attitude. Thank you for showing the world the reality of life for many poor children in the Phillipines. What really gets me is watching so many videos made by foreigners praising the Phillipines as such a wonderful place to retire and live. Yet, we see how the rich Philippine government and wealthy ruling class could care less in providing a safe, comfortable, home environment educating these youth to become productive members of society. It CAN be done and really not at great cost to society. But, the Phillipines, as well as many other countries around the world continue to believe that the best place for these children is to return them to their trash parents, despite the fact that there exists thousands of sane and intelligent individuals and families that would gladly take these children to give them a better life. But the incompetent authorities just don't care. Yet, foreigners are encouraged by videos on you tube to retire and invest in this criminal nation. To hell with the children. Here where I live in Mexico, the situation is not quite so bad, but the incompetence and disinterest by the narco authorities is quite similar. In the village where I live, many children have been murdered, abused, and suffer in poverty living with their illiterate, drugged and drunken, abusive parents, with a government that could care less, just like in the Phillipines.

Im a filipino, and i still grew up in that old parenting style, that beating children is the right way to discipline kids, and if they get terrible as children (drug addicted, depressed/lazy in all aspects, or end up pregnant) it's their fault for being complicated children.. Then they pass everything on the next generation.. That alone forms an ill society that can never move forward. 😢😢

Giving a child a beating is never ever a good way to discipline a child and this act in civilized countries is considered illegal / child abuse If parents teach their kids properly from a young age discipline in the right way like giving a telling off taking away their playstation or grounding them they generally grow up to become well behaved My parents never ever used physical discipline on me or my brother and sister they teach us properly and we all did well in life Even when it comes to having girlfriend's my parents teach me and my brother and sister the did and don'ts the risks and such and to use a rubber if I don't intend to have kids as well as being careful of STds and such End of the day there is no need for being strict or using physical discipline it's just a matter of teaching kids the right way

By the grace of the Lord, soldiers do cared for me and eventually was able to contact my family and i was able to get back home. I am a Filipino citizen and a teacher. Mere punishment alone to these children (in conflict with the law) is an easy and shallow short term approach but restorative justice should be the goal if we truly see them as human beings capable of positively reorienting themselves given the guidance of caring adults. There is no short cut solution to this complex problem. It is primarily the responsibility of parents but what do we expect from them when they are not well educated and poor? It will be a repeatitive cycle for their children if the authorities and the rest of the community will not look after thier welfare and restoration.

Uneducated & Poverty= slaves for the rich. Teach the children to do basic math and read and comprehend what they are reading, so that they further their future, especially if they are not lazy kids. I believe if you give them at least that, they will thrive.

I was only in an area with street children in Manila 2-3 days. It was a blessing to get supper for a mom and her 5 children who slept on the corner. Then, I made around 50 sandwiches for the next night to give to all the street kids I could find... But, unfortunately, it rained, so everyone was on the move and went elsewhere, and I had to leave the next morning. Someone promised to give them out for me the next night, but who knows if they really did? I would have visited a prison, but I was in bad, internal physical pain, and couldn't risk the bumps on the bus for an hour each way. God save the children!❤️❤️❤️

The real problem stems from a system that allows some to have it all and are not willing to share, we live in a sick world where 1% of humanity have and the rest are have-not. And this will never change, why, GREED. How can the poor keep from having kids when they can't even afford to eat, let alone have birth control? We live in a sick world!

It's the fault of government official's ineptitude in handling initiatives and campaigns, and also the Philippines is rife with corruption, with a shit ton of corrupt government officials, but there have been initiatives made for fighting against poverty, the mayor of Manila (Isko Moreno) had houses and monthly government funding given to poorer families and students, he even made infrastructure, anti-pollution, and anti-corruption campaigns in Manila, a lot of which were halted due to covid but the majority of his initiatives and campaigns got shit done, did I mention that the Philippine's middle class is actually expanding due to infrastructure and employment gaining momentum over the years. We have competent leaders but unfortunately we also have a lot of corrupt ones,

I haven't been to the Philippines since 1998 but I remember being a kid and being told not to interact with the street children. There were so many of them if you helped one, they would all flock towards you. It sounds terrible but the situation has been like this for so long, it's easy to just ignore the extreme poverty. My family is still poor there but better off because all the girls married foreigners. The government needs to do something, not just killing and arresting undesirables.

Yes. It all starts from home and most of all parenting. I can't reiterate more that the government did *NOT* put a gun to the parents or teenagers head to have more babies they can't feed or take care of. The government also does not handhold parents on how to structure their family. The government has been fighting for the RH bill for how many years?

@fellow human being i'm you In my opinion Marco's was smart enough to know the people were NOT ready to exercise their rights and freedoms, despite the corruption.. but the corruption was not the cause of poverty we have now. It is not because of the corruption. People GOT their "people power" as they wanted and same with the church... now look where we are. The people grew to follow the church rather than abide by the *law* Now its 2020 and look at how this country is in terms of *DISCIPLINE*

@fellow human being i'm you Education takes money. That's across the board, every country. Common sense is not taught in school. Government collects tax/income tax. Gives it back to people in forms of hospitals, roads, bridges, social programs etc. And accept that there is certain degrees of corruption *in every country* Here are some facts. -The Chinese have less children than Filipinos. -The Chinese have been here just aslong as the Filipinos and who are the most successful and rich here? -Philippines has a higher avg family size. -The poor have more children than the rich -Only less than a third of the population pays income tax -Tax Payers pay for rebuilding due to calamities. List goes on... Tell me why, during the late 80s till 2016 was the government *WARNING* the church year over year presenting facts, studies, and having debates on TV about the reproductive health bill. What we have now is a country over populated (based on available resources/jobs, not land mass) which has grown past 45 years with little direction and vision of what is a fruitful life. Tell me why a mother and father would product offspring they can't afford?

@fellow human being i'm you I am very aware of the autonomy of the Philippines and how it has grown to be what it is for over 45+ years. It is complex to find the exact concution. There are evils, and necessary evils at play to start with change and have a new clean slate. But what we have now is just the same old cycle.. We can start by concentrating on the "human wrongs" before caring about "human rights."

Yes, and they seem to downplay the irresponsible parents. The main reason for ALL this. Irresponsible parents who like to have sex like rabbits. ANY responsible adult would not buy a dog and intentionally not give it a home and not feed it and left it to fend for itself in the streets. But I guess it felt good back then when they bought the dog so all i well I guess. To make a baby, two adults are needed. TWO. But unfortunately for these children, their parents intentionally did not provide for them food, shelter, and most importantly, give them an education so they have a future. Oh, and those same parents...won't stop at one child they let loose unsupervised on the streets. They make another baby...and another baby....and another. THEN they blame drugs, and the government for making babies... I mean for not keeping their legs closed...I mean for costing more money to feed more people that they intentionally made.
