In my early twenties I had a buddy who was kinda one of those easy going guys who wasn’t a fighter but certainly a guy who could defend himself. We were iron workers and pretty construction strong but not skilled ufc guys. He was also a drinker. He was a holiday down in key largo drunk off his ass and when he left the bar was confronted by three guys who wanted to rob him. Witnesses indicated one of the would be robbers tried to get physical and Robert punched the guy. He was out before he hit the ground, fell backwards striking his head on the curb. The man died that night. Witnesses testified in a grand jury to what happened and Robert wasn’t prosecuted. Regardless, Robert knew he drank excessively before this happened and was never able to get past “killing” this guy. He was distraught for years. He became reckless and his life spiraled. Last time I saw him he had recently recovered from losing a leg in a motorcycle accident while running from the police. Guy was a complete wreck until I heard he died a few years ago at 51 years old. He was in and out of rehabs, AA, NA etc.. I feel he never could get past the fight. He kept saying if he’d on,y stop drinking before and wasn’t at the bar......... perhaps he never learned a lesson but I sure did. NEVER put yourself in a situation like that. Accidents happen. He didn’t mean to kill that guy but in his mind he killed guy.

Half my fights were me walking away and being followed or having shit thrown at me. I do think walking away is 100% the only way to win a street fight, but I can't have a group of dudes following me and my girlfriend home so it'll end right there because most of the tough guys are just trying to impress their friends, never really just fuck someone up. Plus everyone always says "you don't know what someone will do in a fight" so you have to be the person their talking about. I'll mike tyson a dude and eat his ear for lunch if I really feel like my girlfriend is in danger. If I'm in danger it's just a fun little moment but when she's being harassed it's another game. Joe's right about the guys who want to fight ... the bullies. I realised at some point that bullies are being bullied themselves. Growing up i was the target of the local bully. I wasn't the only one. He had 2 older brothers who defended him against others but they bullied him. I hated him. He kicked me, punched me, pulled my hair, stamped on my toes and anything else he thought up. Some of the older boys hit him back but would be attacked by the older brothers. He bullied me until one day when I was 14 (he was 15) and had gotten to the point that I wasn't going to take it any more. I had bought a pair of drumsticks from my savings and was drumming in my friends hallway just of the footpath. I felt a sting in my spine as the bully kicked me from behind without me realising he was there. He asked that I let him try the drum sticks but I knew if he got his hands on them I may never see them again. I cracked. I stood up and swung around catching him on the side of the head with the heavy end of the drumsticks. He fell to the ground and looking up at me in disbelief, I saw the fear in his eyes. For the first time i saw his fear - fear of me. I hit him another 5 or 6 times as hard as I could for every time he had hurt me in the past before he could escape my swings. His brothers and 2 cousins attacked my home with a few rocks. My dad just happened to be passing in his works vehicle and they ran. My dad was a bit of an animal and we called to their house and my dad knocked his dad out with one punch. That was the end of the bullying. I realised that he was a very scared and traumatised person who overcame that by treating others like he had been treated. The thing is, they always pick on those they perceive weaker than themselves. If you turn on a bully they don't like it. They don't like being hurt. It puts them in the position of the scared powerless victim. From that point I ran quite a campaign for most of my life against the bully. They were all the same. Scared when it comes to it. My bully was a bit different. I gained respect from him but he went on to run a gang that killed over 40 people. Just before he was assassinated he looked me in the eye one day we met by chance and he told me he would be moving into my area and that I'd be seeing more of him in the future. As I looked into his eyes I could tell that he was thinking of the time I beat him and my father actions. He had shot 2 of my old friends. I knew if it came to it, I must prepare to kill him. I had a near miss one night when I spotted 5 of his gang in their vehicle of choice, a Ford Cortina 16E, sitting across the street viewing my home. I got my wife out the back and managed to watch them from behind some hedges. After a half hour, they drove away. 2 weeks later he was ambushed getting out of his car and was hit with 34 bullets. I must say, I breathed easier. There was no investigation. Everybody wanted him dead. Everybody colluded in his death. Everybody looked the other way. If more people had stood up to that guy things might have been different. I know I've went on a bit but I'm in lock down with nice weed, because of the virus, and thinking of my experiences with bullies. I must say, I've seen that look of fear on the faces of more than one bully. Now back to more peaceful memories.

We had a case like that when I was in the district attorney's office. A guy went over to his neighbor's house when he was standing in the garage and they got into an argument and he hit him and as he fell he hit his head on something in the garage and died. It's been a while but I think he was initially charged with murder but it was plead out to manslaughter, but he definitely went to prison. We all talked about that case a lot at the time and how the same thing can happen in any fight, and how the guy obviously didn't intend to kill him when he punched him, but that's not where the intent comes in. It's intent to strike him not intent to kill him, you're responsible for the reasonable to expect outcome. And when you start beating somebody it is reasonable to expect it could kill them.

The two worst feelings you can have in a fight: 1. When you are defending yourself and you knock someone out. Horrible feeling, like guilt, anger and sorrow all wrapped up. 2. Punching someone AS HARD AS YOU CAN IN THE FACE and your fist just bounces off their head like your nothing and they dont react at all. It's that "that's the moment he knew, he fucked up' x 100. I’m 41 & when I was growing up saw plenty of fights.. in bars & out.. I saw a guy I knew get eye gouged & his eye was hanging from the optic nerve so he went into the toilet, looked in the mirror & popped it back in. Crazy stuff. There was this one guy though.. the ‘tough guy’ of the town... I never liked the prick but we were in the same crew so never came to blows. He was a nasty, angry person. He bit a huge chunk out of some guys cheek at a pub once which is fucked up. Thankfully he moved away & has stayed away. I spoke to a friend a fews years back now & he told me this guy had not changed at all & was constantly fighting in the bars he frequented up north. He said that he beat a man so badly that the man is brain dead & when asked why he did it he said, “coz he was a smart cunt”... the fucking awful person. I heard that not long after he was in another wild bar fight & a bloke smashed a huge dinner plate across his melon & sliced the side of his head open, leaving him with an enormous scar. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer bloke.. he truly has an evil streak. Every town has a guy like this.. bigger towns have a few.. I’ve never understood the violence for no reason thing. Where I’m from pretty much every weekend someone dies after smacking their head on the pavement after being punched... usually from behind. It really is a sickening sound to hear the crack of somebody getting hit or kicked in the head. Shameful stuff.

Growing up in NYC I've been in countless fights and strangely it's always never been me starting it. Last fight i got into was 2 years ago when i got ktfo with brass knuckles in a 1 on 1(still hold my scar proudly) and the fact i could've died considering my head hit the floor hard is a blessing. One of my friends gave me solid advice i live by now he told me "it's always better to walk away and never get into a fight; just know there's a possibility you can end someone's life or they take yours and if it comes down to that just know, it's either you or them who comes out of that one alive so only fight in a life or death situation" then tells me a story of a friend he knew who died from a fist fight in the park. Now it's made me 10x more of a come to peace kind of guy who doesn't need to prove anything and would rather talk it out regardless if im called a "p*ssy", but if you persist and after constant objections and my life is in danger im walking out alive not you, i put it on the dead people i love. I've heard stories of people dying from it and i never knew and blessed to be alive.

Nice callback James. I didn't realize how much I still disliked Michael until Dan delivered that final legal shot. I absolutely LOVED watching Dan put the cherry on top of that sundae. It seemed like fitting payback for what Bisping did to Hamill on Season 3 of TUF. Instead of being a man and communicating to Matt that Matt was going harder then was necessary during the wrestling drills, Bisping opted to get his teammates to gang up on Matt and fuck him up with heavy repeated head shots for a 3 minute round. Matt had to go to the hospital. Perhaps he didn't understand how bad that was to do someone who is completely deaf. Bisping had been whining about Matt being the golden boy so it was definitely a calculated, cowardly move on his part. Karma's a mofo.

I’ve fell down stone stairs while riding my bicycle when I was a little kid...I had a huge bump on my head that was about it and it hurt like a B*tCH. 🤕

As someone who grew up boxing but never performing in Street fights, it was the feeling that the other guy just didn't care about consequences. With me, regardless if I won or lost, I was getting a beating when I went home from mum and dad that I couldn't fight back so, lose lose.
