This week, Streetfilms tagged along with actor George Hahn for a very special episode: “How to Ride Like a Gentleman.”
In this film, we explore the city with Hahn and learn these valuable tips:
“Don’t ride like a dick.” Don’t roll through crosswalks or frighten pedestrians. There’s no reason for that. “It’s just rude,” he says.
Don’t ride your bicycle on the sidewalk.
Don’t ride against traffic. “It’s dangerous…and rude to everyone,” Hahn says.
Don’t buy special clothes. (Hahn has ridden in a tuxedo, but you knew that.)
Of course, Hahn is courteous to make a point: there is a larger danger on our streets. Watching an SUV driver rudely inch into a crosswalk, Hahn observes the most important rule of the road: “Your destination is no more important than anyone else’s,” he says.

As a dutch person I think its great you teach people how to ride like a civilised cyclist. Its what parents (and primary school) teach every dutch kid as well. Riding mindfully is very important. But don't count out the role of infrastructure in this. You give pedestrians their space if the infrastructure points out your space, you don't go on the sidewalk if there is a cyclepath and you don't go against traffic if it is a 2 way cyclepath. These were clear examples of the real situation screaming at the government that its infrastructure needs to be changed to fit that situations need. But great to see the change in other societies.

Great point but when I'm commuting to work 10kms with hills - I have no choice but speed. On a nice Sunday or afternoon errand after work - it's style and leisure.

Vehicular cycling is generally safe on wide roads, side streets. Suburban streets suck so much because people drive 45 to get to their house 5 miles from the main road through a maze of curving roads. The best thing you can do is be practical and yield more than a motorized vehicle. Some states don’t prohibit riding on the sidewalk. However it’s more dangerous than the road because the biggest danger on a bike is not being seen.

Riding on the sidewalk makes you feel like a pedestrian as well, when in fact pedestrians walk around 3 miles per hour. Where as cars go 30 and bikes can go 20-25 easily. Bicycles are vehicles. Acting like the vehicle you are in accordance with traffic law, being predictable on the road, is safer than weaving onto and off of the sidewalk at speeds that motorized vehicles don’t expect on a crosswalk.

I love the part where the person mentions that they don't need all the tourists in NYC. Living in another city that thrives on tourism normally (Florence, Italy), i can say it's so much better just having the city to ourselves as residents!

We need more of videos like these as well as instruction in grade schools. (Why not do this during the pandemic?). One thing that urban cyclists in North America (and everywhere actually) should embrace is using hand signals to indicate turns (especially left, for right hand drive locales), and stops. Letting followers know of your intentions reduces accidents. If you look at how people ride in the Netherlands and Denmark on the cycle paths, you will see that it is very relaxed, but also smoothly flowing and safer. In America in contrast, many still view urban cycling as a means to cut their travel time, and as a result are always rushed, burning lights and even riding on sidewalks. The best way to avoid this is to study your route ahead of time, choosing quieter streets and paths, where possible.

I watched, I think, all the videos of streetfilms. This one is in my top 5, maybe number 1. Oké, now I'm gonna watch it again. The message is: "You SHARE the road, you don't CONQUER it"

Great rules of conduct....... I just wish everyone would abide by this video. Always ride with traffic, yielding to pedestrians, And don’t run red lights. Cops should ticket all the above infractions religiously....those are the cyclists that give us...... the good ones a bad name. Excellent video. Great job.👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

I am going to get my friend who does not like New York City --- especially Manhattan. Note: He has never been to the City. But he is a bicycle rider and he rides like a gentleman. In fact George he has given me a Raleigh bike much like yours. It is at his apartment right now while somce constructin is happening in mine. As soon as that is finished.

"We don't need the tourists" but you need a tax base. Or cut the government spending, which may be no bad thing. Perhaps NY can turn into a more normal city, instead of billionaire's row with skid row tacked onto it. Anyway a great video, and great to see gentlemanly attire instead of ghastly sports activity wear.

Always follow the same rules cars do. Ride with traffic stop at all red lights. Respect pedestrians. They have the right of way and they are called cyclists not bicyclists 🚴‍♀️ if you want to sound like a “cyclist”... 😎

Basically common sense, but as the saying goes common sense isn’t so common. While most cyclists probably adhere to his advice there are enough who don’t and end up making everyone look bad.
