Our hawkers are pretty scared about being filmed due to fears that it may be sabotage by competitors or that you are working undercover for the AVA. :D Even I, as a local, was once stopped near an eatery while photographing the neighbourhood, and he asked me am I from the AVA! ;)

That was not entirely the bus driver's fault. The guy was drunk and dropped his pants. The lady on board the bus that was monitoring the people entering asked him to leave. He then stumbled off the bus and fell and the rest is history. Both parties are to blame, if you think about it.

@intrinsical

I live in that area (Yio Chu Kang/Jalan Kayu) and there are 4 famous prata restaurants here. Out of these 4, there's one that used to be the best (but is now the worst among the 4) and is famously proud of that fact. I have seen their employees scold customers so I imagine that's the one Mike went to. It's a good thing because these days, their prata is a small, ghee-soaked and pale version of the original.

As a Singaporean, I'm glad you enjoyed breakfast here in Singapore! Your video really encapsulates the fact that being in Singapore, you have a wide variety of affordable food (not just breakfast) to choose from and still not be disappointed. Although I have to apologise on behalf of the stallowner of the prata place that shouted at you to leave, not sure what was the real issue behind it but I'm very sure no food stall owner will shoo any customer away here in Singapore, because we really like it when foreigners love our food. Make sure to try durians and the standard sugarcane drink at the hawker centres! It is a must not miss! Looking forward for your next visit here! :)

Peranakans (male: Baba, female: Nyonya) (土生华人) are the descendants of Chinese Fujian migrants in the Malaysian region who have mixed with the local Malay population. They identify as Chinese and still hold on strongly to their Chinese roots in terms of culture. They're not a special indigenous race that brought foods over. They're Chinese people that applied Chinese cooking techniques on local southeast Asian ingredients. Edit: In any case, Nasi Lemak is a food of native Malay ethnic origin. That's a further error there. The Peranakans may have their unique take on it (such as the Nasi Lemak was linked to Nyonya in this video), but its historical origins should lie with the Malay ethnicity. BTW, big fan. Keep these videos coming please. :)

Carrot cake isn't radish that's been cooked till it's mushy and soft. It's basically shredded radish made into a steamed cake with added flour. The radish is just for flavour.

I really respect the heritage Peranakans have in SEA, however nasi lemak was not invented by them. Sure, there are many dishes the Peranakans made popular throughout SEA, nasi lemak just isn't one of them. That's a dish born out of the Malays and SEA, whatever cultures that might be ✌🏼

Mike, this is one of the few videos featuring local food done by a foreigner that shows adequate respect and some discernment of the product. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Several things:1) Nasi Lemak is a Malay dish. The tofu you had on the plate was a Chinese concoction though (confusing, I know).2) The white pasta-y bits in the carrot cake was not radish, but made from a boiled solution of rice flour and water. The name carrot cake is the result of a literal translation of the dish's Chinese name into English (Luo2 Bo4 Gao1). Luo2 Bo4 refers to both radishes and carrots in Mandarin. The slightly salty bits you tasted in the dish were dried radish - hence the name. Your Lor Mee recommendation at Old Kallang Airport was entirely on point. I see no risk in affirming this in public and potentially destroying what I love, as the lines are already serpentine and keep out all but the most dedicated Lor Mee seekers.

you hit the singaporean trending tab, good job! normally i dont get attracted to this type of content but its nice to see content covering local things in general where the presenter / host isnt paid and doesn't make me want to cringe straight past my skull and into the next room :)

The best thing for breakfast, at least back in 2006, was the roti prata that was hand made everyday in the hawker stall across from Farrer Road. Every Saturday we used to go get some and wait in the line, watching that man flipping the eggs into roti. Yesssssss!

I never liked Lor Mee until I ate the one at Old Airport Road. Usual for me is $6 bowl with cut chilli but without vinegar. I can find a few Prata places where I wouldn't mind eating but none for Lor Mee. It's that good and unique.

Mickel Tee ...their selling point is using real fresh fried fish chunks and the slurry gravy is nicely balanced with spices and soy sauce. I have been eating their Lor Mee since 25 years ago and $2 can get me a substantial bowl with plenty of fish meat. To think now you have to pay up to $6.

Adeline Gan no argument there :) yes they increased over the years. 2 years ago a $5 bowl for breakfast could last me till dinner. Same portion increased $1 since then. The ladies - their memory power la. Take advance orders and never get them wrong 👍

Nasi lemak brought over by Nonyas? I'm pure Nonya but I dont recall my late Nonya gran cooking this dish. I have always recalled it being a Malay dish. And that potato thingie in the nasi lemak is "begedil".

Nasi Lemak is a Malay dish and means 'Coconut Rice'. Malays are native to Singapore and Malaysia. Malay food is wonderful. Singapore is truly a food paradise.
