In this episode of the New Bike Build Series, Zack installs Samco coolant hoses on to our 2018 Yamaha R1M. The project was easy until it was time to remove the thermostat housing unit, but Zack shows us that experience and patience pays off as he removes this part without tearing the bike down more than it already is; Stripped down, naked and afraid! Naked & Afraid... Hilarious! About the plate if I may, I got help from a CT Trooper b/c he said he could see my plate. The plate he ran as he shouted "PUSH! PUSH! Oh you're in a bad place now!" over his loud speaker as I ran my bike to the nearest shoulder & safely off the highway. He told me I passed him at 110mph about 5 exits back on 95. It was Thursday & I just knew I was going to jail. He was a 10th Mountain vet, we traded stories waiting for the wrecker. He & his team were kind & courteous, for that I'm grateful. Also a Marine buddy of mine backed down the highway to make sure nothing happened. Oh boy! No tickets, they called him a dumb ass & told him to take me to work. Awesome morning lol

for the small skinny hose 650ib you should put that sleeve thats on the oem hose onto the samco hose because its there to stop contact heat from burning the hose line. it fits onto the samco hose as ive done it with mine.

N00b question alert! What does a thermostat do? And what effect does removing them do?
@aciid_0
@aciid_0 5 жыл бұрын
They measure the heat of the engine coolant and open a valve once temperatures are reached so the coolant can circulate through the radiator to lose heat. The idea is 1 to get the engine warmed up quickly from cold, and 2 to regulate the heat of the engine, keeping the coolant as hot as possible but not too hot. Usually 90-100 degrees C - this is because (edit: this is incorrect, see comment below) heat is transferred more efficiently when both objects are closer in temperature (in this case, ambient air coolant engine) Unsure what removing the sensor is supposed to do on this R1M specifically, other than leave coolant flowing through the radiator at all times
@aciid_0
@aciid_0 5 жыл бұрын
@@flybyguy1450 Thanks, I stand corrected Leaves me wondering why my car would keep coolant between 90c-100c? I assume there is a reason the valve controlling coolant to the radiator does not simply stay open once the engine is warm enough? Something to do with near-boiling water under pressure affecting heat exchange? Any ideas?

Hey ib if you remove the thermostat will you still get a temperature reading on the dash?
@leepratt1
@leepratt1 5 жыл бұрын
Temp is read from a coolant sensor which is generally on the block screwed into the water jacket, this gives an accurate temp of the engine. Removing the thermostat will not effect the operation of this sensor.

Lee Pratt people says bad idea to remove the thermostat
@leepratt1
@leepratt1 5 жыл бұрын
@@cheryee3659 Yes you are correct people do say this. My personal experience is that its never been an issue , but this is based purely on my personal situation; engine am i using, the way in which i intend to use the engine, the climate i live and will primarily use it. I dont have nearly enough experience to advise anyone else outside of those parameters. Knowing how 650ib and Zac work i am sure that the theromstat and related parts will be included for the winner and they can choose based on how they plan to use the bike to leave it or re-install it. My response however was whether or not the dash would output a reading without the thermostat and the dash will still output a reading with or without the thermostat.

@@sk2283 The fan has nothing to do with it...
@sk2283
@sk2283 5 жыл бұрын
Bass Player I mean as an aid to keeping the bike cooler on roads. most bikes fan switches on around 100 / 105 degrees C and off again at 95/100 ish, if you are using the bike in warmer climes / town riding etc it helps to lower the fan operating temps, it has no effect when riding at speed as the radiator is receiving air flow naturally, only other way to generate more cooling is to increase size of radiator - removing stat has very little effect but slows warm up
@Bass.Player
@Bass.Player 5 жыл бұрын
the thermostat has absolutely nothing to do with the fan cycle, the coolant temperature sensor controls the fan.
@sk2283
@sk2283 5 жыл бұрын
That’s exactly what I just said !! Temp sensor is read by ECU so if you want to help cooling then you can adjust the ‘fan on’ via the ECU rather than removing thermostat, but this only really helps bike at slow speed or when stopped

100% Agree - especially as it is far easier & better to adjust the fan on/off temp setting through ECU via software - Woolich or FTEC etc. can do it. Sometimes people do mods just for the sake of it without thinking it through, this is not a full race bike.
