@@its_casza3342 I listen to this concert at least once a month. He is a musical genius, very popular in Europe, the new album is a masterpiece, the visualization at the concert is also made by him and his brother

I saw him perform this concert at 3 separate occassions, in different setting and all 3 were epic. Pure genius in every sense of the word. Fils de joie clip dropping in 2hours.!!!!!

Best concert I've ever seen. I wish I could have been to the Madison Square Garden one in 2015, but I'm unable to leave my apartment as I'm too ill. I'm so happy you are watching the entire concert. Finally, someone listened. It's brilliant. Someone already explained about Ta Fete below. There are French/Belgian cultural references that we won't get unless we research them Stromae is half Belgian Flemish (his Mum) and his Dad was a Rwandan Tutsi who met his Mum in Brussels while attending University there for architecture. He was pressured to return to Rwanda by his father who paid for his education and wanted him to return to help build Rwanda. Unfortunately, he was murdered along with one million other Tutsi in the 1994 genocide (Papaoutai translates to Daddy where are you?). Batârd means mixed race, not pure white, a racist word. Not bastard as in English. There are some wonderful interviews with Paul on KZfaq either with subtitles or in English. I loved the animation at the start and in various other points during the concert. Stromae thinks way outside the box. Thank you for doing a review of this amazing concert. I've watched it so many times I've lost count.

I don't speak English well, so I'm sorry if I don't understand what you are saying. In French "faire la fête" means "to party" but "faire TA fête" means "I'm going to give you a very bad time", the song plays on this ambiguity. And "bâtard" in French means, for example, to be a child of an African and a European, as is the case with Stromae, which is the opposite of a "pure race".

@@its_casza3342 Yes I forgot to mention that "Bastard" is used as a racial slur when it comes to human beings (when it comes to animals like dogs it's just to say that it's not a "purebred" dog). Yes great reaction, I only understand part of it but thanks for taking the time to be interested in singers who don't speak your language! (hence the advantage of subtitles) Can't wait to see the rest!

Batard is not a child from mixed couple. The origine of the word comes from the maried guy going to play with other women and having a baby. That baby is a batard (Fitz in english) as he is made outside of the legal couple. We more often talk about batard from rich family.

@@lamultinationaleapastour1487 No, "bastard" isn't colloquially used for dogs. The proper word in English is "mutt".

Bâtard is a fascinating song because it is playing off of juxtaposition. On the one hand it describes the pressure to conform to one category or the other, that is, to not be a “bastard” in the traditional sense of the word. On the other hand the chorus opens with “not one or the other, you're a bastard, as you have always been and will forever be”. Which is in my mind an obvious use of the other sense of the word, that is, being a jerk. For context, Stromae's father was from Rwanda, but was killed in the genocide. His mother is Belgian, which is ALSO a country with a long history of political division between the two largest populations, the Flemish and the Walloons. With this context in mind, this entire song, and especially the phrases “But are you Hutu or Tutsi?”, and “Flamand or Walloon?”, become that much more meaningful.

A bastard is usually use for dogs without a specific breed … Stromae wanted to point the fact that some people could not find their place in society because of ideas, race, job etc..

like someone stated below the bastard in this case it someone who is either excluded by some groups or either does not want to fully commit to all thoughts and mannerisms you can find in that group. someone who keeps his mind open and looks different to the world than others i was born in flanders as a kid from Dutch parents and for many i was that Dutch kid but when I visited my family i was that Belgian kid, so in that sense I was also a bastard , because i was neither one nor the other
