Entering motorsport as a privateer on a budget means you have to do many things yourself, even if you’re not up to it. Whereas a professional workshop might have a painter employed or at least a business they trust to deliver, my attempts at finding a professional for body work repairs didn’t work out. Instead, I had to struggle through something I hate, sanding and painting.
In this video, witness the trainwreck that was my paint job of the nose cone and front wing. It turned out ‘ok’ in the end and I can finally move onto more exciting items on the to do list.

Michael, One way to easily fix that one remaining paint run: Get that car up to speed and no one will see it. After the race cover it with your checkered flag.

It doesn't work that way. Someone will take a high resolution photo of you at speed, and the first thing you will focus on will be a stone chipped nose cone.

Just a tip. That “drip” in the paint is called a run, at least in the USA it is. To fix it you just need some water, sandpaper and elbow grease. Spray the sandpaper with the water and by hand rub down the “drip” until it’s flush with the rest of the bodywork, making sure to keep the area lubricated with the water

We call the sandpaper wet and dry and you can sharpen your knives with it.

Easier way after its dry is to cover it with soft filler before the wet sand and you have less chance of going through the low spots to the undercoat. Good method for amateurs.

Ive painted goalie mask, helmets, RC bodies and cars, biggest tip is first coat is just a dusting. It should look like you barely put anything down. Second coat you can go heavy. third coat is final touch up ;)

On the run or sag in your paint, I would "nib" it out. Take a razor blade and knock the corners off with a metal file. Then lightly scrape the run until it is level with the rest of the surface. Wet sand with a sanding block and then polish out the paint. You were on the right track with the sander. However, you stopped short. Good paint = good prep and patients. Good prep = more gear! 😉 As long as no one rolls over in the middle of the night on to the gear shifter and wakes up, I think your logic of more cars than house is solid... Cheers!

Your talk about hating painting and finishing reminds me of my Father-in-law and woodworking projects. He and I have a system. If my wife needs a piece of furniture, I design it, he builds it and then sends it to me to finish. He gets to build something for his daughter and he doesn't have to go through the annoying sanding and finishing part. I haven't gotten exhausted from building it, so I have plenty of energy to do the finish work. Win-Win!

I had issues patching and painting an old Daihatsu Max in Japan. It was an 800$ project car and my daily driver. There was a low budget body and paint shop down the street. I took many tries and spent plenty of money on paint. The new paint was beautiful but after it completely cured, I could see the patch under the paint. I was low on time and had to sell the car. I found a seller and sold it for the same price. I recommend finding a partner to help you paint and vinyl wrap.

Painting isn’t too bad but I would never do it outside, take your time and use longer strokes and you spray, always keep and eye on what you are doing so it’s always good to have some good lighting. Glad you got it sorted- think I wouldn’t have been as polite to the guy who did the fibreglass work as you ! I think painting and composite repairs are good skills to learn and will really pay off in the long term. Easycomposites have a great KZfaq series on how to take on repairs and fabrication work.

The sanding and painting process really relates to me and you made the same mistakes as I did sanding and painting my 3D printed model of an F1 car but the finished result is amazing really excited to see you finish fixing and preparing the car and then drive it around

I rebuilt a motorcycle this year and didn't have enough money for professional painting. I did it myself and had to sand repaint some parts 4-5 times because of drips/runs and overall quality. I wasted literally dozens of hours redoing paint jobs and honestly in the end, it still wasn't great but I didn't have it in me to continue. So, I feel your pain brother!

Damn Michael, I've honestly never seen someone struggle like that with spray cans :) No offence meant mate! The sad thing is, I would have painted it for you for 150 Euros, because I'm fascinated by the car and your journey in racing. I'm a professional painter and I got a small spray booth, gun and compressor at home for jobs I do for family, friends and myself. The bad news is, I live in Germany, so a little bit far off :) I am really enjoying your videos though, excellent content. The guy in the repair shop absolutely ripped you off! Should have been 500-600 AUSD maximum for the repair. 1000 had been ok if he painted it proffessionally on top of that! Keep the good content coming! In my case it's the complete opposite. I'm very patient filling,sanding and painting stuff, but I get very restless quick, when working in Fusion 360 :)

You can clean runs with masking tape when the paint is wet by dabbing it.

One thing I will point out here is.... if you know something about yourself.. ie:- Impatient... then you know to not allow that aspect to control your actions. Other than that, I am enjoying this process of learning and prepping the car for use. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Cool project and great video! You challenging yourself to do this type of stuff on your own will give you a better understanding of the car and its maintenance. Even if you do decide to leave some (glass/paint) jobs to contractors, at least you will now know what to ask and look for when interacting with one. Seeing your struggles and being able to join in your learning process means more viewing pleasure for us, haha!

Yep...painting...who'd do it for a living ? Not me that's for certain. I'm rebuildning a 90's Superkart and all the paint is by spray can too. I did find a good fibreglasser to help with repairing and making a couple of panels but still exspensive. You've inspired me, reckon I'll do a video to explain it too. Won't be to your video quality though. Nice work. I'm enjoying the progress too.

I am loving this series. It really brings reality to fruition and allows us racing enthusiasts to not be too scared to enter the sport. I too am an ordinary lad, love motoracing and work on some skills via sim racing. In future I to hope to transition into some racing category. Peace from QLD

Hey, small tip when using spray cans. Use long strokes, and stop spraying at the end of each stroke. This way, you'll minimise the paint running, waving the can around is not ideal,

I also don't like painting or fiberglass repair but it's a necessity for most of my hobbies... So I just grit it and do it right the first time so I don't have to do it twice. When painting, I do the light coat and then I just walk away because I don't want to be around all the paint and all the stuff and then I walk by 5 minutes later or whatever and just do it again and then repeat that a few minutes later while I'm doing something else and then it's done nicely and I don't have to go back to it and I don't have to look at drips. If you're eating yourself on patience when spray painting, go find something that you can do for a few minutes and then walk away from and come back to and do that while you're supposed to be painting

What is the fun in learning, if you don't fail from time to time. Bodywork and painting takes a lot of time. The trick is getting yourself to stop spraying more paint on :D

It's really sucks when an outside source derails your project by basically hitting you where you were least motivated in the first place. As some random hobbyist dude, deciding to spend the money to have something "professionally" done and getting a half passed job is the worst, especially because for you it's usually a big spend to the point you have a really hard time putting in the effort to both find a new person and pay for it again so I feel projects that depend on those sort of things have like big risk signs to me. Not because it's technically impossible ,but because I know if that single point of failiure happens the likelihood of me finishing the project absolutely plummets. I just won't do it 7/10 times and that's all she wrote so I always try to have some alternative ready. Obviously not applicable here but relatable.

Thank you for sharing the trials and tribulations of this project. I can't say that I would have done better but this highlights the "do it right the first time" philosophy, having to go back and scrape and repaint it. Thanks again. Looking forward to all the videos in this series.

A lot of racecars are pretty rough up close. Especially ones on a budget, so all things considered. The paint isn't bad. Nor is the splitter.

Doing things cheaply, the expensive way! Very much enjoying this series (and frankly astonished by the pace), keep it up! Out of interest, considering you're showing the pricing, would you share a rolling tally in the videos, along with the prices themselves (in the style of superfastmatt, but perhaps without the same engineering approach)? Would be interesting to see just how much it costs (always too much)

Duplicolor is the easiest (most user friendly) rattle can acrylic paint by far IMO. It's easiest to avoid runs and get a consistent finish and it holds up well "enough" for a rattle can job unless the vehicle is in the sun all the time.

Fun video but… it’s not really hard and you know what your doing wrong. Iv re attached a lower sill that got ripped of myLotus Elise using fibre glass Matt and filler from my local DIY shop. What you really need is flexible bumper filler for the top layer as you can’t really sand the resin down enough. Also as you know you need to be patient, set the job up somewhere you can leave it over a week and go back to it while your working on other things. I’m sorry to say your probably will need to do a few more repairs like that over the years.

I knew all along how to to do a better job. It's just that I find the process agonising and want it to be over, so I give in and cut corners. Think if something you hate and are desperate to avoid, even if you understand how it's meant to work. That's me with sanding and painting.

The spray is meant to be induvidual specs being layed down… for best results one spec should be dry before the next spec goes on top.

Painting is done best by a smoker.....i used to put a coat on, have a ciggie, thats about the right timing to put the second coat......i was a professional car painter for many years and that was my preferred method

I am late to the party here, but if it might help... think about spraying paint like acting as a 3D printer's extruder. You would never start extruding before the head is in position, and you would always stop at the same time the head makes it to the end of its movement. Since humans are not capable of perfect near simultaneous reaction times like a printer, you solve this by only spraying while you are moving. If you keep extruding/spraying while you are positioning the head (spray nozzle) you are going to deposit material where you don't want it or need it, or pile extra material up in places. This is going to make a mess (a drip/run in the case of paint). Get in a rhythm of starting your stroke/arm movement before you push the button, and releasing the button at the end of your stroke before you stop moving your arm. Never hold the nozzle down and wave the can around. That's for kids spraying their girlfriend's name on a railroad overpass or water tower - not your race car.

Having been involved in racing most of life. Everything from go karts to Indy Cars. I've found that "most", not all, people involved in the "business" side of racing are liars and swindlers. It's hard to find real honest people.

When sanding fibreglass, please wear a mask and attach a vacuum to your sander. The fibres are extremely bad for lung health.

I am not impressed with that repair job from a shop. I'm not the best at glass work but I can do better than that. Once you get into two part paints (paints with a hardener) life becomes much easier for painting. I easily have 20+ sanders of all types.... But I don't have the patience for cad work anymore. Maybe I should make a trip to aussie land.

That fiberglass "repair" was a ripoff. Even a good one should never have been 1k for that. It neither takes much time nor is it complicated to do if you know how to do it. :/

Sorry to break it to you and potentially frustrate you even more, but you bought the wrong type of sander. For this type of sanding you need an orbital sander.
