Our container home, cabin in the woods, & off grid campervan all move forward this week, with even more madness than we expected!
Cabin Progress Report: Only furniture remains. Filling the top guest room with storage units, a desk & shelving. Next up we'll need to move forward with the downstairs "U" couch, and a few units at the upstairs landing zone.
Container Stage: Insulated, vapor barrier added, heating prepped, drywall & plaster added. Next up is interior wall finishings, tiles, carpet, and exterior painting
Campervan Update: Step completed, but delays on the spoiler due to an installation hiccup. Next phase is the installation of our new monitor for the driver's side, the custom "arm" that will hold it in place. We hope that will go hand-in-hand with the arch around the cab & the fridge installation.

Sleeping in unfinished van, make-shift temporary kitchen... challenging times with an incredible lifestyle in sight and not too far away. And the end of last year there was a 4th major project happening at the same time... YOUR WEDDING!

As a fellow somebody that runs off of solar, do a mini split for your ac and heating needs! When you research it, the space heaters does a 1:1 ratio of electric to heat, versus a mini split can do up to a 1:3 of electric to heat. Way more heat from the same amount of power used. So many other benefit, like no large holes going thru your structure, just the copper lines.

Subfloor heating is by far my favorite. Pretty cost effective, doesn’t take much time and warm floors are the best. Works great with tiles.

Do you think we should use it under carpets too or would the carpet be working more as insulation and blocking the heat?

@@ladiandmargaret as far as I know it is not recommended for carpet for the reason you mentioned, however tech is changing all the time and if anyone could find carpet that worked with subfloor heating it would be you.

Margaret, I live in central New York. I suggest you do a wood stove as backup, "belt and suspenders". Fireplaces are pretty but inefficient, we have an airtight stove with a glass panel, so we can see the fire. Wood because you can always get it, airtight for efficiency, glass panel for beauty. And depending on what stove style you get you can cook, and have hot water if the electric is out. 🔥👍

I agree. When I had a house in Orange County, New York, had a Vermont Castings wood stove. Really kept our oil heating costs down. Useful to have duel heating systems. These days, I’m in a condo with all electric, heat pump, (forced hot air) which I wish I had a secondary alternative. 🤷‍♀️

For heating and cooling, just a good quality air conditioning unit will give u 2-4 times more heat than regular electric heating. If cooling is not required. go ahead with simple electric heater - it's well insulated small space, so keep it simple ;-)

I feel like that bed frame is going to be a shin killer. Also, there is not a lot of storage in that bedroom. I wonder if Ladi could raise the bed a foot or so and build some under bed -storage. Drawers at the foot and maybe even lift the bed up like in a RV to access the area closest to the window. Then, when you are there, you could unpack and stow the suitcases under the head of the bed. Maybe that is what the units that you lifted up there were for. It is a tricky space and you guys are the best at tricky spaces!

We live in a container house. We have central heat but when it’s extremely cold we use a propane heater. 1600 square feet and get toasty in the main areas. But the farther from the source it gets pretty cold. The propane is definitely a wet heat. We wish we had more redundancy in the event of power outage. A wood burning stove would have been helpful in hind sight. We do use propane for our kitchen stove.

Have you considered electric underfloor heating, hooked up to Solar/Battery system, which will give good all round heat coverage also you can "zone" it so you get the the correct amount of heat for each area...must be the way to go especially with solar!...Loving the builds 🥰

The cable your electrician used for wiring the container house looks like CYKYlo (flat cable with a very thin outer sheath) and I'm not sure that's meant to go into anything but plastered brick walls. Because the outer sheath is so thin it relies on the plaster for structural integrity and the cable is not meant to come anywhere near wood (combustible) or metal (sharp edges, conducts electricity). Probably won't hurt and it's the electrician's responsibility, just wanted to note that.
