And just in case anyone is viewing this and wondering what a (phonetically sounding) "puckamu swap" is, it is actually the PCMMU or Pulse Code Modulation Master Unit. Basically this is a "computer box" that takes telemetry from the Shuttle and de-codes and formats it such that it appears as useful information on the Mission Control screens. There are two of these on the Shuttle entitled "PCMMU-1" and "PCMMU-2"

Robert Gibson once said mission simulations is "death by training". He explained how MCC throws the kitchen sink at the Astronauts even scenarios that are near impossible to happen in real life.

The wiki article on Atlantis included that the KSC crews nicknamed Atlantis "Britney" due to her finicky maintenance problems.

Wow! Where did you find this Matthew?? I've actually been a very serious Shuttle launch "enthusiast" from as far back as when John Guidi was the prime Nasa Test Director and Wayne Hale was the prime Ascent Flight Director during the STS-80s. I've been working on and considering submitting an article to Popular Science detailing many of the technical idiosyncrasies of a shuttle launch for those who are like me and miss the excitement and complex nature of these events...with this multi-layered video, you've provided the Shuttle junkie in me much to internalize and I'm having a ball with it! Thanks so much for sharing and if you have access to any more of these pre-launch mission control simulations, I wish you'd upload them...I'm one person who would avidly view them!!

First failure sounds like a ssme fail after ATO mode.

I am not familiar with "steep deorbit" and my initial google searches didn't find anything. Does anyone here understand what is meant by the term and why it is nice to preserve?

Steep deorbital trajectories are faster and induce more intense heating on the shield -- shallow trajectories induce longer, less intense heating. In this case, it's because the Shuttle only had one chance to descend and land. Any deviations in the descent would result in the Shuttle coming down at an unacceptable place -- a hugely heavy, hard to maneuver glider that can only realistically land at certain large international airports.
