Do you ever get stuck when your art hits an ugly or messy phase of the creative process? Is it difficult for you to push past these (perceived) set backs to end up with a successful painting/collage at the end of the day? You're watching the right video!
Earlier this week, I watched my friend and fellow artist, Katie Gebely ( / @katiegebely ) make this quick, 5-minute mixed media painting as a way to jumpstart her creativity: • 5-minutes Mixed Media ... . After watching her video, I had an idea to use the 5-minute exercise as a way to jump-start two stalled mixed media paintings.
This video shows the entire process, start to finish, of the roller coaster ride I took to make these two mixed media paintings. It was more of a challenge than I had expected, but in the end I ended up in a good place - it just took a LOT longer than I initially anticipated!
00:00 Mixed media process starting from blank sketchbook pages
11:55 Applying the 5-minute rule (x3) to the process after getting creatively “stuck”
43:35 Bloopers - that time Jackie completely forgot the phrase “time stamp” 🤦‍♀️
I kept going for 2 main reasons: (1) to get practice turning the project around and (2) to prove a point: the more practice we have turning things around, the less scary it becomes when we find ourselves in a rough spot. Once we get used to these rough spots being a normal part of our creative process, they become a problem to solve which is often a fun, satisfying part of the process.
Materials used: Canson mixed media sketchbook (amzn.to/3PH0Dzc), collage paper, acrylic paint, pencils, china marker, and a color shaper.

Hi Jackie, The more I watch your videos the more I appreciate you as a person. Just wanted to let you know that though your art is great, you as a person being so too makes watching these videos even better. Anyway, you asked if your visible decision- making makes any of us as anxious as you, is rather a thriller lol. Will she put it there? No!!!! Wait, no?…. Maybe she should. Ohhh no, that’s much better. Wait, so is that. Stop there, right there!!!. She took out the glue, she choose. Cool. Wait, why paint over that? No, wait… yes….. This is how it works for me and it makes me feel like I’m joining in. But I love how everyone would stop at a different point and that is a good thing or we would all be making exactly the same art. Much obliged for sharing you art with us and all your tips and tricks and of course, tour lovely personality…. :). I heard the timer and wondered what I had used mine for, but it is yours, from the past. Ha, that was funny to me. Happy New Year everyone!!!!….. :).

I love how art mimics life. Your words about having to cover up things you love in order to have creative expression reminds me of personal growth experiences. How you have to let go of something or someone or some personal trait in order to move forward. 👌🏻🤔

A rollercoaster indeed but beautiful in the end! (And I think you've invented a new game show for artists -- take an 'unsatisfactory' piece of art and "Johnny put five minutes on the clock please" and see what can be done with it and since it's all within the confines of your own studio you can put the five minutes on the clock as many times as you need to :) There are a lot of art-making channels out there, Jackie, but you are unique, both in how you make art and in how you present the process/es -- it's always an enjoyable and edifying visit ❤

I really like how it ended up Jackie. It started out hectic and all over the place but it ended up looking fabulous. Both sides did. I have a sketchbook about that same size and I do use both pages like you did in in your sketchbook. I do too totally different paintings in them using the same colors and seeing how different I can make each one from the other it’s so funny when I’m watching you put your collage papers on I’m saying no not there there and you put it there and which surprised me so it’s like we’re on the same wave length so to speak. I really love your channel.

Jackie, I am new to your channel - binging gleefully, I might add... - catching your kids occasionally as they make either an audio or visual appearance. Though my "kiddo" is 32 now, I cherish every interruption she brings into my studio. As a mom, may I please ask you to NEVER apologize again for your kids popping in??? Last night, I was up to my elbows in paint, matte medium and some devilishly elusive tissue paper, when my daughter came in to say goodnight. Noticing a large blob of paint on my arm, she came over, rubbed her shoulder against the blob, kissed me on the cheek then left the room with an "I love you mom"! That tiny moment was silly, fleeting and precious but if or when it happens again, I will be just as happy then. P.S. I am absolutely gobsmacked by your art, your process and your finished work!!!!! Do you teach on SkillShare???? ❤🎉😊🎉❤

The left side was a skull face with happy smile! I love that you show the real life behind the canvas! i like how these turned out! the process is what nourishes you as an artist, and is why we do it in the first place. if the making (our favorite part) is a long and twisted road, does that automatically define it as hard?❤

Fascinating - thank you so much for sharing. The timer sessions look a great tool, helping focus and not over-think. I like that you were prepared to adjust when it got in the way (drying needing time). In the early part you didn't seem to be making as many connections as you often do, so it remained a lot of stuff. I spent ages willing you to use more red, but the variants of blue/turquoise/grey plus pops of green are just so beautiful - plus it lets the small red moments glow.
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Judy! That’s so funny because I wanted to add red for a very long time… but couldn’t figure out where and how. Then I found the blues, greens, and grays and it all came together. You’re so right about the connections! ❤️❤️❤️

Something I learnt but am still trying to get my head round is, (and let's hope I can explain it lol) even though a number of layers may be totally covered over, if you didn't have them the top layers would look very different. I really enjoyed watching it and found it calming. I don't panic if it starts to look not quite right as I know by trusting the process it will all come good if you keep going. 😊 I saw you used the piece of butterfly paper. Do you ever use patterned papers like the scrapbook pads? I have lots of leftover pages which I'd like to incorporate into my abstract art/collage but I'm not sure how.
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart 8 ай бұрын
Thanks! I haven’t found a great way to incorporate patterned papers in without it looking like someone else (other than me) made it. I slip the butterfly paper in occasionally and it’s surprisingly divisive - some people HATE the butterflies. 😆 I say use what you love - if you have scrapbook paper patterns that you LOVE, use them! If not, use it for trying out new paints/mediums/etc on or just for playing around. ❤️

Thank you! Yes, I get stuck with paintings and collage. Do you have trouble gluing the pallet paper down? Is it a little waxy and hard to stick? I had use some in the past that I purposefully painted on with black paint and cut up for a collage. It was hard to use, and also wrinkled.

The way you're so indecisive , makes me think you have something on your mind that has nothing to do with art at the moment , when I get stuck that's usually what it is for me , I just walk away and come back later and then I know just what I want to do , just my opinion ........Linda Bailey from Corpus Christi Texas .

Hi Linda! It’s entirely possible that I had something else on my mind - I can’t remember. But I wanted to keep going to see if I could turn them into something I liked without walking away. Since I didn’t like how things were progressing, it gave me extra freedom to continue exploring with very little risk of ruining anything. I don’t always push so much, but that day I’m glad I kept going ❤️ So glad to have you watching!

The short answer is: because that’s what felt good to me ❤️ You will make different choices in your art and that is a good thing. “Artistic style” is essentially a nickname for describing all of an artists preferences and decision making. To develop your own style, I’d recommend creating as often as possible. Make a huge pile of art. Then another. And another. Find our what feels good to YOU ❤️
