Don't speak it Into existence lol I can't live without my cadmium paints I am willing to pay for them they are at the top of list of favorites... I use cadmium yellow in everything I paint, it's like the sun is actually shining on the paper lol. Please don't take my sunshine away😂❤.

I used the Rosa Gallery monopigment set for the 30 Days to Better Watercolor class and was very pleased with how all the projects turned out. These paints are like the Talens Art Creations sketchbooks, affordable, and absolutely no hang ups about preciousness.

If you mix flame red and titanium white you'll get a rosa coral equivalent that is lightfast. It was flame red or bright red I can't recall off the top of My head but I had gotten that color and was surprised to find fugitive colors when the mix I just mentioned looks exactly the same.

I really like Rosa paints. I took advantage of the sale they had in the fall. They were such a good price, I feel like I can play as much as I like and not feel like I’m ‘wasting’ them. Also, I brought some extra colors I wanted from eBay and they arrived in perfect condition.

I always love your thoroughness with switching and reviewing watercolors! It helps me learn more about pigments in general and to know if xyz brand would be worth buying! Your voice is lovely to listen to as well! I can honestly say I haven't ever fallen asleep to any of your videos, which is a great compliment as my boys would tell you, "if mom falls asleep watching something its not good at all and dont waste your time." I also appreciate the fact that you don't have music playing in the background! I have noticed more and more artists doing this, I can't explain why but its the most distracting thing ever. I'm trying so hard to focus and learn what they are teaching and explaining, but walk away from the video feeling like my brain hurt, confused, and like wasted time and didn't learn anything. I suppose they are just trying to entertain and keep things interesting, but it end up distracting or mayne its just me and the way my brain works...🤷‍♀️ I find this to be true at dinner parties as well. If there is music player in the background while I'm visiting with others, I find it hard to focus and feel insanely exhausted when I leave the dinner party. Nonetheless, my brain loves your style of teaching and sharing!! Thank you! 💗

You are so right. I ❤ Lindsay's @thefrugalcrafter style of commentary because I always learn from it and she is fun to listen to. Music is distracting -especially those operatic, cinematic tunes. I much prefer narration to music. Thanks for bringing this up.

Thanks, I rarely use music except for a bumper intro or outro if it might set the mood like a holiday project because it makes instructions hard to hear and modern TV and phone speakers are not too good at producing clear speech because the speakers are so thin.

May I ask if you've been screened for ADHD? Difficulty filtering out music and other background noise is a common issue for us.

@lesleyegbert4807 Hi there, sure, no problem with questions 😊 The answer is no; I have not been screened or tested for ADHD. I have researched it a bit. I would agree, I have most of the symptoms. Looking back to elementary school in the early 90's, I struggled with reading and concentrating while at school...its like all the small noises where amplified in my head and no matter how many times I read the sentence I couldn't understand or remember what I read. I'm sure there was some dyslexia in there too as I struggled to pair sounds with letter, in fact I still struggled with this one. But it much better after teaching my children to read through phonics. If I do, in fact have ADHD, I've had it for so long and learned to cope well, so it's all good! I love having the ability to hyper-focus even if at times it's a problem for others...lol! It's when I'm in my creative zone. Thanks for asking!

I went through a similar change of mind with Oxide of Chromium after following mixes from The Mint Gardener - she makes an amazing deep green mixing it with Payne’s Grey and calls it “Monstera” (after the plant)! You could use two colours you don’t care for mixing a lovely third one 😊 And thank you for accommodating those of us that sometimes nap during long swatching videos - I actually stayed awake this time 😂

Have you tried Paynes gray with burnt sienna? Burnt sienna made with pbr 7 not pr 101. Letting them mix and mingle on the paper instead of the palette and dropping in pigments sporadically creates a lovely granulating/ texture mix (depends on your paynes gray ofc) that resembles old rusted metal. Works with Pr 101 too. It's just a preference thing. Also for a lovely dark forest green try burnt sienna pbr 7 mixed with phalo blue. Also for a rich teal color phalo blue with van dyke brown. Phalo blue with raw sienna makes a nice mint hue. And quin gold with thalo green mixed on the palette makes a really interesting mid dark green. But if you let these two mix and mingle on the paper and kinda gently layer more while still wet and gently move them around just the tiniest little bit it creates this gorgeous patina effect and you get multiple hues of golds, soft greens and dark yellow greens. Quin gold with sap green makes a very nice green gold color. These are just some of the mixes I made last week that turned out really good. Do you have any interesting mixes you want to share? Especially color separating or granulating mixes? I love swapping mixes with people.

@@blankmission5369 Your mixes sound great! I love mixing too, especially interesting neutrals or greens. My favourites are Indanthrone Blue with Quin Burnt Orange, also Phthalo Green Blue Shade with Quin Purple, Diox Violet with Transparent Orange, Potters Pink with Cobalt Teal, Magenta with Perylene Green… I also love all PBk11 mixes, like Lunar Blue and the Van Gogh Dusk colours!

Neutrals and desaturated mixes are so important and (also) awesome. And these sound like some great ones! Took screenshots for my notes and will have to try these. Pbk 11 is never far from my working area. I also like bloodstone. Daniel smiths neutral tint has this weird texture effect it creates in watery washes or when charged creates stringy like drip effects is the best way I can describe it. I'm getting into alot of "tonalism" type work to improve my values. Liquid charcoal and black charcoal are messy but fun and incorporates well with watercolor if you ever want to explore or experiment with those if you haven't previously. Thank you for sharing your mixes with me! ✨ I'm sure you seen the white nights shadow colors already. Most of them have either ivory black or pbk 11. Agreed about the dusk series by Van Gogh. Also Daniel Smith makes these primatek dot cards that come in a little pack with 36 generous size dots to try out some of there primatek range. It was really helpful for me to know which ones I wanted. Just in case you didn't already know about those little packs I thought I would mention it. Thanks again I've been struggling a bit with some of my neutrals not coming out clean enough so it was very helpful! 🖤

This is such an interesting exchange on mixing greens and neutrals. Hope @thefrugalcrafter might consider turning this into a video series showcasing mixing colours. All of the suggestions here sound fabulous and would look even more so on a video!

I enjoyed this so much, thanks Lindsay! No way I would never sleep watching/listening to you and your vast knowledge of pigments. I have been collecting Rosa's single pigment tubes and am so happy with them. Your swatching is helping me think whether I want tonadd something to my collection. Jackson's has great prices and carries the whole line. 🎉🎉 Oddly, chrome oxide green is a colour I like for mixing (with oranges, blues, violets, magentas) and Rosa's is the one that made me like it. Like you, I always felt it was 🤢 yucky, but not this one. I would live to see if you manage to create mixes you like it by mixing it with other colours. Thanks for this, I really appreciated your commitment and dedication to this long swarching video.

I just bought the Rosa watercolors & tryed the Madder -- I like it! It's a dark red - but I like it. Hope you're having a great trip, without any rain!

You should try the pbr24 instead of yellow ochre py43, you should have it in your paul ruebens 48ct pan set as Naples yellow you may have it in your mission Gold 48 set?, but anyway it's basically a clean yellow ochre. That way you have the option to have it clean or you can dirty it up if you want, I believe it is more versatile than the yellow ochre itself and since you travel with limited pallets it maybe something that saves you room, and it's so bright and clean once it's dry and it mixes cleaner if you want it to. I hope it is something you can try sometime cause your paintings are so pretty.

DaVinci has a PBr24/PY53 Naples Yellow Deep that I find I prefer to Yellow Ochre for transparency

Thanks for this. Maimeri has PBr24 as Naples Yellow single pigment. It is so nice and cleaner than other Naples Yellows which have added white. Thanks for this reminder

You probably have interacted with PY110 - Daniel Smith's New Gamboge is PY110, PY97. Also I cannot get over how goegeous the Rosa paints are. I have some of their paints and they're such a delight to use

I think kimberly krick mentioned something about pv55 being more lightfast than pv23 in her video about rembrandt using it. And if you have pv55 and indanthrone on your pallet you can mix a dioxazine equivalent, because pv55 is more versatile imo.

I agree that Emerald Green looks more like a turquoise than a phthalo green! I love M. Graham's Indanthrone Blue (which they call Anthraquinone Blue) and Mission Gold's is amazing. Qor's is really nice too. Schmincke has two shades of it, most companies only do one or the other. DS's is really dull and dark.

I love a good swatching video and Rosa Gallery are probably my favourite watercolours, I love their brightness. So funny though because when you go yum, I go yuk and vice versa. I’m now swatching my Rosa’s …… again, it’s very therapeutic 🎨 🖌️

Thanks for the great swatching video! I wonder if some of their PY42's are granulating. The PY42 in the form of Mars Yellow from Daniel Smith, for example, seems to be granulating, so perhaps it's the same/similar in a few of their mixes as well? Great review, thanks again!

Caput Mortuum means "dead head," so like the purple color of a corpse. Mummy brown was more of an actual brown from what I've read.

This brush…what brush are you using? I love how springy it is. And the tip shape - the spread looks so nice. Is it sable? Also, I went to Michael’s to buy a dagger brush cause you like them and both stores I tried had none in stock.

Your swatches look very vibrant on my screen, not sure if that's due to camera settings or editing, or it's how it really looks? I was a bit disappointed in some of my Rosa Gallery tubes. Violet PV23 in particular is quite dull and warmer compared to my Cotman and Van Gogh paints. Indanthrone blue is also a bit duller than Roman Szmal's. Others appear fine, but I don't have anything to compare them to. Those 3 star ratings for fugitive pigments are bogus. It's infuriating how brands can just write any rating without repercussions. (Even renowned brands do it.) I also see PR177, a notably fugitive pigment in some of the mixes. I tested that one which Roman Szmal rated BW7 and the tint swatch started fading within weeks.

I didn't enhance the video so the colors are true. I've never used the tubes but I would think the pants are tube filled but how quickly they wear down.

Sepia (seh Pia) means squid in Italian -they produce and eject black ink into the water as a way to camouflage their getaway movements when chased. In Italy, "Nero de Seppia" (Sepia black) is used to colour pasta dough, and in Spain it is added to Paella, turning it black. Both in Spain and Italy (both being Latin based languages) Seppia is pronounced SEH Pia. The vowel E is pronounced EH and not "ee". I am not a native speaker and my native language is Latin based. English speakers tend to pronounce it "Seepia" because in English E is pronounced "ee" as in "see". Long story...but hopefully useful

Calamari or seppia in Italiano. We need to change the spelling of our Sepia now. But Wikipedia has it as long e sound still. So still a bit ambiguous.

@@Patti5d You are right about the spelling, it is "Seppia" in Italian. I just corrected my response. Autocorrect plays its tricks on me. As an Italian speaker, I can add that depending on the region, people will call the animal (or food) Seppia or Calamari. For example, it would be Risotto Al Nero di Seppia (where the colour is added to rice for risotto, near Milan) but they would say "Calamari Fritti" (fried squid) but not fried Seppia (or Seppia fritta) in other regions. I will stop rambling. If you read up to this point, I thank you for your patience and attention 🦑

I'm curious, have you ever bought a pan, and a tube, same color, same brand, small tube, and see if the same amount of paint is in both, after drying the tube color in a pan? A pan is basically tube paint that's been dried, (?) So, are we actually buying water, with the tubes? I hope that's somewhat comprehensible! Lol 😂 I'd prefer tubes, for refills, but just mushing this around in my feeble mind. 😊

I measured my half pans and calculated the volume at about 2ml. Small watercolour tubes are typically 5ml.

I believe that water is a main component in tube paints! Now I love getting tubes and pouring my own pans. I have worked quite large on paper rolls and watercolor grounds on wood panels or sheets of plywood! Now if I had to get my paint from a pan to cover a huge space I would go nuts! Tubes will give you that huge amount of color right away! SO there is a real reason for buying tubes too!

Winsor and newton said that an extruded half pan is equivalent to a 5ml tube. Extruded pans are compressed and very concentrated. You can full a couple Alf pans with a 5ml tube but it won't be as concentrated and will wear down faster. That's why liquid filled pans like rosa, schminke and white knights wear down faster than extruded pans like winsor newton and sennelier.

For this price point, I’m quite doubtful the cadmiums, etc are real. Most cheaper kits don’t use the poisonous colors…. I was under the impression that these colors are also expensive to make, but maybe they’re just poisonous but cheap. I’m fine with my Cadmium hues.

I don’t enjoy granulating colors… 😂. Not the right audience for this company then. You affected my buying patterns enough that I have a lifetime’s worth of watercolors already. No more! Unless I need specific artist quality colors anyways. Like WnN - there’s this beautiful gold, and I love the phthalo blue. And I probably will need to find the perfect Sap Green…right now I mix it myself and ….well I don’t want to?

Like all brands, Rosa has mainly non granulating colours and a few granulating ones. You might enjoy the non granulating ones, perhaps. I suspect their price point relates to their currency 🇺🇦 rather than quality. I live in 🇩🇪 and people go shopping to Poland because the exchange rate makes everything there much cheaper. I suspect this applies to Ukraine -and price is not a reflection of quality.
