In this new series of video I'd like to share with you things that make my life easier in the studio. There are many unsung heroes that have an important place in my workflow and I feel that some of these items are worth to share.
The Mod Duo X from Mod Devices is a Swiss army knife: modular stereo effect processor, cv toolbox and midi hub... Is hard to not being amazed by the different duties it can perform in a studio. I will do a full review soon, but for today we only check its usb midi capabilities.
The Quadra Thru is one of those tools that seems too good to be true: a less than 50$ midi splitter that doesn't need powering is a no brainer to have in my opinion. It's years I'm using one and love it.
The Strymon Engineering ZUMA is another important piece for me: it powers all my effects and some synth. I strapped it to my table and I leave cables plugged all the times, so I don't have to stop my workflow when i need to turn on a device. I like that is powerful and offer 9,12 and 18 volts. It also looks cool, that never hurts.

That is correct. I think the boum is incredible but the mod has more versatility

Very looking forward for the Mod Duo X-video (my wallet isn't), especially in the use case as a "master channel strip" for the Octatrack, considering the great output of your (recent?) work the sound is supposedly stellar..

I find that when I put the Mod Duo X on the output of my RD9 and just connect the inputs to the outputs on the Mod duo X, my RD 9 bass drum doesn't sound as good (as fat) as it does when plugged directly into the mixer. Have you noticed sound degradation when using the Mod Duo X ?

@@OoraMusic I'm originally a software / programmer type of guy, always raging against the "this copper cable sounds warmer than that silver cable" crowd - based on science ;-) I've also always said that Nyquist/Shannon theorem allows us to sample audio at 44Khz and the sampled signal will be as good (to our ears) as the original signal 🙂 I still stand by all that but lately I've found that there's a big difference between theoretical performance of digital devices (which assumes they've been designed by smart people, using the best components they can find) and actual performance (designed by people having a 9 to 5 job, not honestly interested in the actual performance of the product they're making - as long as it just ticks the boxes specified by management).. So lately I'm finding myself being very fond of oldschool analog equipment, eventhough I've been telling everyone that whatever their analog gear does we can do digitally as well. The issue seems to be between the "we *theoretically* can do it digitally as well" and "in practice, most digital devices simply aren't designed well enough to do so". The Mod Duo X seems like a lovely FX device but was never designed to put on the master chain - even without *any* inserted effects in the audio path, it simply won't faithfully reproduce the input signal on its outputs.

Hi, do you think that the mod duoX can compete with your other hardware pedals? caus the mod duo is software based plugins!

Short reply : yes. Long one: i stopped thinking that software is not as good as hardware/analog. Doesn't make any sene to me anymore. There is no good or bad thing, but only functional things for what I have in mind. Mod duo sounds excellent, OTO boum sounds excellent too, but for a live set the MOD make more sense to me. Another example: the empress Zoia is digital and sounds amazing, but i never clicked with the UI and the hands on control, Mod has an easier UI and more controls. That works for me and each artist should find his own way, my advice is not to categorize good and bad things in relation to their analog or digital form.

Thank you for that info!You think the Quadra can work with triple delay from Tc electronic as midi in and out? I tried to connect the delay already through midi with the Microfreak but i dont think its happening. I wish the Quadra would solve that . I have the Mc 101 as the'brain'. Thank you!!

if you use the duo x as an external effects unit can you create different pedalboards and switch between them while performing live?

Doesn't the Peak require higher amps than the strymon can provide? I looked at doing the same as you but after checking the power adaptors on my Peak etc, the power supplies didn't seem good enough.

I managed to turn it on and work with pedals too. Might not be recommended, but never had issues!
