From the Tin: "A thick-sliced broken flake in the Scottish tradition. Ripe red Virginia tobaccos are combined with a generous measure of fine Louisiana perique, and then pressed to marry the components and deepen the flavors. The cakes are sliced and gently broken before tinning. Fillmore presents an elegant sweetness and delightful piquancy, enhanced by a creamy richness that develops throughout the bowl. Sit back, and enjoy a lovely, leisurely smoke."

According to this article written by Pease, there is indeed "a pinch of latakia" added to Fillmore. Sixth paragraph down. glpease.com/BriarAndLeaf/?p=40

Nice! That was the confirmation I was looking for. " ...there is a little of the smoky stuff in that one (Fillmore), too. Some, those very sensitive to its presence, will easily notice it; others would only notice its absence." Sounds like just a PINCH for seasoning.

I'm such a Latakia lover I tasted it immediately. It's super super subtle. I smell it maybe a couple three times per bowl...same with taste. I love how Pease adds these delicious little touches to his blends.

Picked up a tin of Fillmore shortly after watching your review! Outstanding in the flavor department, but mechanically I find it much more of a PIA than Elizabethan. Looking forward to hearing how it continues to stand up to your go-to mixture!

I've haven't smoked much of this blend but I did certainly on two occasions have a passing, fleeting moment where I tasted Latakia. if there is any in there it's almost like it was unintentional. I love this smoke. thanks for another great review video.

Having my first ever bowl of this stuff, and I think it's going to be pretty essential for me. Really excellent stuff, and a fine companion to its drier, Virgina-Oriental sibling, Embarcadero. I don't taste the pinch of Latakia, but I like Latakia, so maybe it would offend those who really can't stand it.

Man, after picking up a tin of Fillmore and Embarcadero I am, most definitely, a GLP guy. I already loved Gaslight, Chelsea Morning, Quiet Nights, and Meridian, but this video made me grab the Fillmore. I have to say I like this more than Elizabethan. I pretty much had the same experience smoking Fillmore after Elizabethan as I had smoking Chelsea Morning after EMP and smoking Quiet Nights after Nightcap; I just like the G.L. Pease blends more than the Dunhill/Peterson. I suppose I will have to try Sixpence now, too, since that seems to be the only Old London that isn't in my top favorites.

from Pease website where he states there is a small amount of Latakia in Fillmore. Thought you might be interested. "Next, 2007 Fillmore in a Castello Old Antiquari #10, chosen because it’s seen its share of these weeds. Suprisingly, I found more similarities to than differences from the Escudos, but it is a different enough beast that comparisons are tricky. If I were to smoke them side-by-side, the differences would probably be more pronounced, but with a day or two between them, my palate seems to focus more on the similarities. The inclusion of a tiny percentage of latakia (less than 3%) does add another dimension to the smoke..."

It does have this undertone of Latakia but I really think its the aged fermented virginia combined with the perique that gives it that musty character. Do you think that this blend is similar to Haunted bookshop in regards to the red virginias?

Bradley: Awesome channel; fun, informative, love the standard format - thanks and 'well done!' Two questions fer ya: 1) You smoke indoors - doesn't that make your living space smell like stale tobacco, and if so, do visitors and guests find it disagreeable? And, 2) How do you gauge nicotine content? Do you taste it? Does it cause a discernible sensation in the tongue, mouth or throat? Thanks for any info on this you can impart.
@stuffandthingsyoutube
@stuffandthingsyoutube 7 жыл бұрын
I DON'T smoke in my apartment because it isn't allowed, but even if I did, I don't find pipe smoke to have the same lingering stale smell that cigarette smoke does. I think it's actually quite pleasant. Nicotine is sometime hard to gauge, but a high nicotine blends can make your head spin along with several other symptoms. You would definitely notice it if you experienced it.
@donmak0427
@donmak0427 7 жыл бұрын
Oh, interesting. The room background with the hanging guitars and the Beatles painting look like a living space, but now that I think about it more, it *does* seem a bit rougher than the interior of an actual living space. And about the nicotine; also interesting. In putting the question to other forums, I found that reactions to nicotine can range from "feeling relaxed," to sweating, dizziness, nausea and all the way to vomiting(!) Having never been much of a smoker, I have no experience with the drug and have never noticed *any* reaction to it. Being forewarned, I'll keep an eye out for these effects, and try to avoid the more unpleasant ones at the far end of the scale. Thanks!

Have you tried McClelland's Personal Reserve St James Woods? I just popped my first tin of it open. It's a broken flake, so I know it doesn't fit your criteria. But I usually just rub broken flakes out entirely before jarring it so it's all ready up front.

Hi Bradley. Can you tell me the differences you find between red & dark VAs. I was told that they both lack the grassy, hay-like flavor found in bright VAs. Russ Quilette also told me that do to different processing, Mclelland's 5100 Red Cake is not a typical "'red VA." Thanks and it seems like your getting closer to that favorite of yours.
@stuffandthingsyoutube
@stuffandthingsyoutube 7 жыл бұрын
Usually when I refer to "dark" Virginias, I'm using the term dark to describe the taste of matured and red Virginias as opposed to the light grassy taste of the flu-cured and brights. I'm not usually referring to an actual "dark Virgina" variety, though that does exist. Yep, a bit confusing on my part I know.

Bradley, it's Laurel Heights that has a dash of Latakia...barely discernible. LH is basically Telegraph Hill without Perique. I've never read that Fillmore contains Lat. I'd be shocked.

Bradley I know you don't go out of your way to age tins. However you may want to stow away some Fillmore for a couple of years. I think your sensitive palate will appreciate the nuanced flavors that develop over time.
@Giesela0815
@Giesela0815 7 жыл бұрын
If its so hard to find the flavor you enjoy, why not blend a perique mixture yourself? Especially since you love ribbon cuts and not flake or plug, it might be relatively easy to do. P.S. Do you mind releasing the song for your intro/outro?
@stuffandthingsyoutube
@stuffandthingsyoutube 7 жыл бұрын
Ah, but I don't think it IS that easy. I've fooled around with mixing component tobaccos myself, but there is a LOT more to blending than putting a few varieties of tobacco in a bowl and mixing them together. That's way we pay the pros the big bucks!

I just smoked my first bowl of Fillmore or tried to. This stuff tasted like pure ash. I mean nothing but ash. So bad I couldn't get through the first third of the bowl before giving up on it. The aftertaste it left in my mouth was so bad I had to brush my teeth and take a breath mint.
