Pipe Tobacco Review: Samuel Gawith "Cabbie's Mixture"

A new blend from Samuel Gawith, one of England's oldest and most lauded pipe tobacco blenders? AND it's a VA/Per? Stuff&Things is most certainly intrigued.
Please enjoy our full review.
From smokingpipes.com: "Samuel Gawith's Cabbie's Mixture is the first coin-cut tobacco from the venerable English blending house. It's an all-day blend with a bit more body than most, as well as a subtly sweet, subtly spicy flavor that makes the smoker aware of the Perique's influence, without being overwhelming or heavy-handed."

Nice review Bradley - I'm a big fan of Cabbies Mixture. I didn't get the soapy notes, but I will agree that its a bit of work to get it ready for the bowl. I typically dry it for about 15 minutes.

My personal favorite vaper. I just smoked all of the 1 of 2 tins I had. Didn’t like it when I very first tried it. Couldn’t keep it lit for nothing lol. Went back to it after 4 years of aging and it completely blew my mind. Now I can’t get my hands on anymore of it. I think gawith revised what they called it cuz I remember seeing it called a penny cut but that could just be pipe community lingo.

Thanks for the review. I must say, I kind of like this cut (it's like Three Nuns, which I enjoy a lot). As long als you have proper coins, you can just stack them in the bowl. I agree, there are greater Va/Pers than Cabbie's Mixture, but I still like this blend a lot.

Here in CZ it is possible to buy a sample (10g) pouch of tobacco. I dont know whether this is an original package from the company or the seller just make them on his own (didnt ask). But when I smoked those samples I usually didnt got any or very diminished taste of lakeland. But when I go for a 50g tin, then there was a much more of that lakeland taste. Happened to me with this one, the Westmorland Slices (sample was sooo tasty and the tin has a lot more of that lakeland taste) and even with the Happy Boogie Twist! I think with the SG and G&H tobaccos the lakeland is a contagious disease and some tins were just more exposed :)

Bradley, I enjoy all your reviews and need a little assistance. I really like the Drew Estate Meat pie and have been looking for a similar english blend to try. I have tried Nightcap, but for me it wasn’t quite as full flavored ( I had a sample from bulk). One point worth considering ... Some pipe smokers (believe it or not) prefer the super-moist state of Gawith blends, even though as you say Cabbies is not overly moist itself. If you know how to pack and light these moist tobaccos, they actually have much more character than their drier counterparts. The trick is to pack them VERY loosely, and to light them VERY slowly. It will surprise you how well they burn if you do that. And they have a lot more character and flavour when they're moist. Unfortunately most pipe smokers have a fixed technique for packing and lighting. One of the worst things you can do with Gawith tobaccos is to super-heat them when lighting up, or to puff them like a freight train. Using FVF as a prime example, if you rub out a fresh flake, pack loosely and take you time gently lighting it, it will often burn to the bottom with minimal relights. And it will taste MUCH better than if you dry it out. Try it and see! But if you're one of those dunderheads who insist on puffing like a locomotive to get the nicotine hit, you'll get what you deserve.
@stuffandthingsyoutube
@stuffandthingsyoutube 8 жыл бұрын
+Bartholomew Fotheringay-Phipps - People are welcome to try, but I DO know how to pack a pipe loosely and light it gently, and this blend was not good wet. Some other blends though, I would totally agree with you.

I must say, at first I was quite excited about this tobacco, but meanwhile I think it is a little overrated. Has definitely a tendency to bite you and what I love about Vapers I get to a considerably higher degree from e.g. St.James Flake of the same manufacturer. The latter is much more plummy (no pun intended!) and deeper than Cabbie's and imo is less of a hassle to smoke. Still a good tobacco, though and I would always recommend to try it.

No idea if this I right but Gawith are famous for their 'Lakeland blends' such as ennerdale flake and these can often taste very soapy in a pipe that has not been used for Lakeland's before. Maybe the soapy taste you are getting is from that? Doubt it would be intentionally in a vaper mix, so it could have got mixed in by mistake. Just a thought...
