Stuff&Things reviews Mac Baren HH Vintage Syrian, a "Balkan Blend" consisting of Kentucky, Syrian Latakia, Oriental/Turkish, and Virginia tobaccos, some of which were harvested in 1974 and 1983. Will Bradley be charmed by this aged blend and the mythical Syrian Latakia it contains?
HH Vintage Syrian: "The base of the blend, a little under half of the volume, is a smooth and yet powerful Latakia from Syria. This tobacco gives the blend the overall smoky taste, a powerful taste and yet without any tongue bite. To add a spicy note to the blend, Turkish Oriental has been added. A mix of different Virginia tobaccos from 3 continents adds a sweet natural taste. To complete the taste with depth and body, we added a little Dark Fired Kentucky from the US.

Thanks for your video. I'm from Latakia, Syria. My grandfather used to sell Syrian Latakia tobacco to USA in 1950s. I used to smoke pure latakia tobacco when I was there. I used to mix it with wine or whiskey, so delicious.

Late to the party on this. I picked up a couple of ounces at a local tobacco shop because I thought it would be nice to check out Syrian Latakia before it disappears. I was expecting an interesting one trick pony sort of blend. What I got was a deliciously well balanced and completely unique mixture that was somehow vibrant and full flavored, while also being mellow and smooth enough to smoke for hours without becoming overloaded on it. I ended up smoking 3 bowls that night and it has become one of my top blends. Can't get enough of it. I really thought you nailed all the nuances of this mixture. Great review!

smoking some right now, I think it's subtle because it's long past its prime, and lat doesn't age, it fades. That original stash (much of which was wiped out in a warehouse fire, including the Syrian used by GL Pease) is now officially exhausted. And it's gone forever, as the problem isn't just political, but rather environmental: the wood needed for the smoking process was massively over forested resulting in a ban in the 80s; and the old tradesmen who kept the tradition going are long since dead or retired.

Thanks for reviewing this. I was on the fence on this one. Loved it immediately when I smoked it. Bought a second tin to put away for future smoking pleasure. Not necessarily to "cellar," just wanted to have a future supply down the line just in case it becomes scarce.

Hi Bradley. Wow, excellent review. Your analysis is spot-on and eloquent, especially how you describe Syrian Latakia. Glad you understand this blend and appreciate Syrian Latakia. I've smoked a lot of this blend-probably my fav or 2nd fav. A couple things-if you like this, try Ashton's Artisan's blend (if you haven't already)- also with Syrian. Crack the tin open and let it rest in a jar at least a month...this makes a big difference I read a comment from someone who spoke with Per Jensen of Mac Baren at the Chicago pipe fair. Per told him he estimates they have about an 8 year supply of Syrian Latakia left at their factory. Keep up the great reviews!!

Very well detailed review my brother! This is my favorite "Balkan style" blend. I first saw this blend about...10-years ago in San Francisco and just from the tin description alone, I knew I would love this blend. I wasn't wrong. Next to Dunhill My Mixture 965, I don't smoke any other Latakia blends; they are both that good, as you already know. I will be buying the 1-lb bag next.

It's definitely top quality! One has to wonder, with Syrian Latakia a finite resource, how much longer it will be produced.

I've been meaning to pick this up for a while now. My personal reason is that my wife is half Syrian and lived there for about ten years. She was born here in Florida though. She's actually visited the port city of Latakia for which the tobacco is named.

It's an atrocity. When we first got married 7 years ago we talked about visiting and seeing some of her dad's family. Multiple factions all vying to rule and destroying millions of lives and a rich history in the process. Most of her dad's family have been displaced and some haven't been heard from in over a year. He's living in Jordan and working for the UN to help find housing for the refugees.

Hey Bradley.....I have a potential idea for a future video. It would be great if you would describe the different tobaccos....taste, room note, etc. I don't know what latakia tastes like, let alone the Syrian vs other. would be great to hear you go over the different tobaccos. virginia, perique, oriental, ......all would be great. would be a nice reference point. I always enjoy your videos. because of your reviews, I now have some Nightcap, 965, Early Morning, Deluxe Navy....have not tried the Nightcap yet. my favorite is the Deluxe navy. good choice.

Got on a kick of your old reviews tonight. Although I don't know, I have my doubts that the blend was almost half Syrian Latakia. For one thing, that was precious stuff, not to be spilled with prodigality. And, too, Syrian Latakia was made from a different base leaf than Cyprian. It was called shek-el-bint, and it was very high in nicotine. Cyprian is made from Smyrna, as the base leaf. Also, the woods and herbs used in the curing are totally different. The disappearance of Syrian Latakia occurred around 1970, well before the current political strife, and it was brought about by the near extinction of the Syrian Oak tree, which was used to cure the leaf. Somehow, Greg Pease, McClelland, and MacBaren managed to get hold of a huge amount in the early 2000s. MacBaren and McClelland took their shares to their own facilities, and Greg Pease left his in a North Carolina warehouse that burned to the ground in 2004. As for the similarity of Vintage Syrian and Black House, I noticed it, as well. Even though there's no Syrian leaf in it, you can still taste it!

Let me ask you, I use the same sort of jar as you're using to store my bulk tobacco in. In your opinion, do you think these jars are adequate for long-term storage? I'm thinking 1 to 5 years. I remember reading somewhere that Cyprian latakia does not age well... I'm guessing it's not so for Syrian.... Seeing how old the crop is. Is it advisable to put these away for a decade or more in a cellar? Before the stock runs out...
@stuffandthingsyoutube
@stuffandthingsyoutube 8 жыл бұрын
+Raghav Talwar - There's a bit of a difference between using an old crop in a blend and aging a blend once it's been tinned. Usually, Latakia mellows out with age in the tin. Either way, this is a great blend.

Like I said, Latakia mellows out with age. It won't be of much benefit to age it, but it won't really hurt it either (unless you age it for decades).
