Among the Peterson's blends Irish Oak is in the top three it is quite enjoyable.

I added this to my last order. I only have had this as an aged sample (4 or 5 years if I recall) and had no idea it had a sherry topping. I'm excited to try this again because, like you, Elizabethan has became a go-to everyday smoke for me. I'll be able to live without Elizabethan, although I wish and hope I don't have to. Cheers!

This review prompted me to buy this blend. I picked up a 4 year old tin at a close-out sale. It was exactly as you described. I did get a mild hint of the sherry. I found this blend to actually taste "Sweet" and that black currant taste and smell was prevalent. But after recently smoking a tin of Sherlock Holmes and then trying Irish Oak I imagine the Sherlock Holmes character smoking Irish Oak.

I love Elizabethan. In fact it's the first real pipe tobacco I tried. It led me to your reviews and I really enjoy both of your channels. I have to argue that fold and stuff flake smoking is the true no fuss pipe tobacco imo. I'm betting the perfect flake is out there just waiting :). That being said I've only been enjoying this hobby for almost a year so who knows if I'll feel that way next year

Great review again, Bradley. I've been smoking Irish Oak for a long time now regulary, side to side with Elizabethan, switching between the two. Very good blend, with it's own twist. It will definitely be my replacement, or one of them. Nothing hits the spot in the back of the throat like Elizabethan though

I really love peterson irish oak as the vapour is like a good strong sweaty soaks and it comes in a nice plain tin which is easy on the eye

I'm going to be ordering Elizabethan for my next tobacco just because of this video lol. Haven't tried it yet but hopefully more people will order it and it they won't cancel it.

The 'choppy bits," are what make a blend burn nice and slowly, especially if there is a good amount of Virginia. Ready Rubbed or broken flake is one of my favorite cuts.

I like Peterson's Sunset Breeze.It's amaretto casing tobacco. Amaretto smells like Dr.Pepper which you always drink with.

cornell and diehl s bayou morning is a great vapor. im smoking the broken flake version but it comes in a robbon too

FYI Macbaren pouch tobaccos (ribbon cut stuff like the Dunhills, e.g. Macbaren Original Choice and Aromatic Choice series) are also made by STG here in Denmark. About the Sherry casks, one would suspect you are right, not least because they do not specify whether we are talking Sherry made on Palomino, Pedro Ximenez or Moscatel grapes, which are the allowed grapes in the Jerez (sherry) district, and which each has very distinct flavours and degrees of dryness or sweetness that are totally different from each other.

For my money the closest match for Dunhill Elizebethan without a doubt. Purchased 4 tins and this one grows on you. a great Blend.

And based on this, a tin shall accompany me to the Outer Banks for vacation starting Saturday. This is actually the first tin I got and I haven't had it yet.

Elizabethan is one of my favorites

A friend sent me a tin of this and I was afraid I wouldn't like it because of the topping, and as you say I do not notice it at all. It's a good blend. For me, not as "punchy" as Elizabethan but still a good solid blend. Of the Peterson blends though, Irish Flake is still my favorite. I just got a Savinelli Sterling Military Mount Shape 104, similar to your 128. It's been kind of a quest to get one since I saw that video you posted of yours. It's likely going to be my favorite pipe. I re-watched the video you posted about yours ... I really do think they smoke better than my Dunhills and they sure are less spendy.

I like sweet Vapers, so I'll have to give this one a try. Great review, as always.

I just bought Missouri Meerschaum Country Gentleman made by STG and it's a little too dry but delicious. Please review it so I can compare notes.

My 50 gram Tin has this on the lid: "A blend of Virginia Leaves from Eastern Carolina, Malawi and Brazil is mixed with a Dark Brown Cavendish Tobacco." I am 68 yo and just beginning my Pipe Smoking Hobby. I can't believe all that I'll have to learn. I have a few major universities close to me, so I'm going to check if they have any Classes on Pipe Tobacco and Pipe Smoking. It will be great if I can find one close enough to travel an hour or two for Class.

Irish Oak/Cask is my favorite blend. Nice flavor for a quasi aromatic. The virgina is prominent. Every pipe smoker knows that they can not detect the actual aroma while smoking. We do detect little things that we do like while smoking. The nose has been compromised. But the ladies dig the aroma. They try to describe it as gentlemanly and nostalgic.Something that a man should smoke. Some kind of old school thing. All this does not mean that you will get laid. They just simply love it. And they will hang around you from start to finish. I certainly like seven or more chics hanging around me.

Have you tried Viprati yet? It is a VaPer, though it has a little burley as well.

When you said you liked Irish Oak for its own merits but that it was a bit bothersome that certain elements seemed a bit different, it got me to thinking: Did you originally seek out Elizabethan or did Elizabethan come to you by happy chance? Perhaps if it is the latter, another completely different blend will find its way to your satisfaction one day.

Good review. Smoked and still smoking Irish Oak. Sometimes the Cavendish might irritate and there is NO cherry flavor, after smoking years Irish Oak there no cherry flavor. Have a great weekend.

Very aromatic in the natural side! High in vitamin N very well balanced bitween burly, virginia and prique I prefer smoke it in my prique mixture pipe!

I think what is stored in the Sherry Oak barrels is the Perique, before it's blended.

I'm a relative newcomer to pipe smoking and enjoy aromatics, bought Irish oak and after smoking a bowlful I ended up feeling sick and lying on the bathroom floor, getting used to it now but it's strong stuff.

As I live in Montevideo (Uruguay, South America) it’s really difficult to get many of the blends you can get in the U.S., but well... you have Trump, so we are almost on a dead heat! Haha! I’m trying Peterson’s Irish Dew mixture, it says it’s a Virginia Burley blend and it tastes very soft to me but very pleasant to smoke though! So, have you already made a review on Irish Dew or, if you didn’t yet, would you make a review video on that particular blend? Yeah I do have to take the bit about Irish Oak being aged in Sherry casks with a grain of salt. Ex-Sherry casks aren't exactly cheap, especially with the demand for them coming from the whisky industry.

I keep this stored away for when I want a strong manly smelling smoke. Otherwise OGC is more reasonable vapor for every day smoke and Peterson Delux mixture is my favorite. I’m a light weight when it comes to smoking.

Peterson's special blends, like the yearly Christmas blends, are produced by K&K it seems. That helps to add to the confusion.

Hello, Bradley, question for you: how are you curating your EM replacement list? Two suggestions for you: Hearth and Home Viprati and HH Mac Baren Acadian Perique. Both ribbons and quite tasty VaPers.

Not sure if you've tried it, but G.L. Pease Telegraph Hill is my favorite VaPer excluding Dunhill's Elizabethan, you might find them very similar as I do. However, the tin note on both are very different.

Brad, I know you've used St. James Flake. the stuff is fantastic. To me this is about the best vapor going. Yeah, it requires a bit of work, but it's worth it.

I just opened my first tin of this and it was packed so tight all the tobacco came out as a stiff puck. Good flavor though.

You ever consider trying to blend something yourself? I can't remember what Elizabethan tastes like. It didn't like it enough to keep smoking it. I think I got 6 tins on a whim. I used to always buy multiples just in case I liked something and voila, instant cellar of the batch I liked.

I wish I could get the Dunhill mixtures here. There is only a very small selection of Dunhill's available in Hawaii. The only tobacconist here says he can't get Dunhill because they are going out of business, so he is only selling what he has left in stock. I am trying the Irish Oak for the first time today. $9.00 for a tin? You are extremely lucky at those prices. I just bought mine today for $19.25 for a 50-gram tin. Pipe smoking is extremely expensive here in Hawaii because it is taxed at a 70% rate. That could explain why there are so few pipe smokers here.

I'm not a smoker, I'm 20 years old and I have never touched a cigarette or a cigar unless I was handing it to my parents. Hell I've never even had a drop of alcohol in my life. But I'm extremely interested in pipe smoking. Have been since I read the lotr and hobbit books and then saw the movies. Gandalfs long stem pipe has a simple beauty to it that I never understood. And I'd love to try it out. What tobacco would be your recommendation to someone who has never even tried the basic cig. (also +5 coolness points for the darksouls shirt)

Here's my theory on the barrels: They do it, but only to part of the batch, then they cut it in with the rest that wasn't producing both a light flavor and a more economically sound product.

I'm wondering if the fact that you can barely taste the sherry flavoring is perhaps not some evidence that they actually DO use sherry barrels in some capacity; sherry barrels are often used in Scotch production to impart a subtle flavor and some color as well, and that is also very like to be a minimalistic influence. Or perhaps its a situation where they use barrel staves or block cubes from an oak barrel that once contained sherry. My guess would be the latter, if for no other reason that it would be less difficult to produce and wouldn't require the cumbersome situation of having a bunch of barrels sitting around; its not a perique factory after all; but now I digress and wax prolix :)

$9 wow so cheap! In New Zealand, 50 g tin of any tobaccos costs about $70 USD due to the tobacco tax increase. So just enjoy your tobacco and never complain.
