Sonic Megamix is one of the most famous romhacks of Sonic the Hedgehog 1, created by Team Megamix. This game completely overhauls the game, adding four new playable characters and even getting ported to the Sega CD. Team Megamix was an all star team of hackers, with the most famous of them being Stealth, aka Simon Thomley, who would later go on to help create Sonic Mania. A lot of what ultimately went into Sonic Mania can be seen in Megamix, and thus, for the final Hacktoberfest video, we're looking at beta versions 3.0, 4.0b, and the unofficial 5.0 release of Megamix, and showing how it ultimately is a forebear to Sonic Mania.
Check out Megamix's soundtrack composer!

I dunno if you'll get to read this, but I composed a few of the tunes for the CD version of the game -- it's actually what helped me get the job with Galaxy Trail on Freedom Planet. IIRC it was the boss theme, Dark Fortress, Starry Night, and the final stage. I'm kind of sad the songs never got to have a home in anything official , but i'm happy you and others enjoyed them! :D

Yes, in fact! soundcloud.com/leila-wilson-woofle/sets/8vzrqpehgpv7 Keep in mind, these are just alpha tracks, so a lot may change, and a bunch of 'em may end up not getting used. xD But yes!! It's a great honor to get to come back and do it again! Freedom Planet's always been dear to my heart.

At 9:50 you start talking about the Special Stages and how they're similar to Mania's. You do know that those Stages are just newly designed Sonic CD Special Stages, right? Similar to how Mania had newly designed Blue Sphere maps?
@StuffWePlay
@StuffWePlay 6 жыл бұрын
On the whole I felt they had a bit more similarities to the ones in Mania than the ones in Sonic CD, particularly with how they were laid out
@PhirePhlame

Mania's specials are way more different from their source material than the bonuses are. It's like a combination of CD style, Saturn graphics, and Heroes objective.
@matti.8465
@matti.8465 6 жыл бұрын
ZombieFobby Sonic Mania's stages are different enough to be considered their own thing. Instead of being a "destroy all objetives" like Sonic CD's special stages are, they become a chasing section in a more lineal enviorement than the one in CD. The only similarities are the 3D map, the fact that you are chasing an UFO and that the rings give you more time. Definetly more original than the blue spheres stages

Not only could Tails fly like his usual self but he could also whip with his tails as an attack even while moving! I was waiting for that to be pointed out because it was really cool to use while going fast so almost no badnik could stop him! On a more unrelated note I find it perfect timing that I got into classic Sonic games and rom hacks just right around before Mania was announced.

If i were to rank the 3 stable (sort of) releases of megamix it would be 4.0, 3.0 and 5.0 because 5.0 has a lot more glitches than 4.0 or 3.0 and 4.0 is very good-looking for it's respective console

I was actually able to beat that special stage in the 5.0 alpha, i used the most recent version of Picodrive on the PSP. I went to the special stage as sonic from Sunny shores act 1, Took me a few savestates to get enough rings. Afterwards the game takes you to the Time Stone Screen from Sonic CD with max score and glitched time stones, afterwards i was taken back to sunny shores act 1. However this version of sunny shores was incomplete lacking a lot of assets (ex. The timer Says TIM instead of TIME) Afterwards i managed obtain 50 rings and jumped to the ring again and it took me to different special stage, this version of the special stage has data stored on top of the screen while the floor was a bright pink, the special stage was incomplete so i wasn't able to beat it causing me to fall off and making the game freeze. Its been more than a year since I've done it so im not sure if it's possible to do it in another emulator.

I remember playing Sonic The Hedgehog Megamix on the computer during lunch breaks back in middle school on some browser-based emulation site (this was before parents stepped up and blocked every video game website except for CoolMath). I shit you not, I actually thought the game was a legit Sonic title, and I fucking loved it back then. In fact, I think it would be great if SEGA held a sweepstakes event allowing people to send in fan-made Sonic The Hedgehog mods and have the best ones included on a compilation disk. Besides, it’s not like they’re Nintendo or anything, they don’t sue people for paying homage to their works. I also think it would be great if SEGA brought back Alex Kidd and Space Harrier, (SEGA IF YOU ARE READING THIS, ITS TIME TO FUCKING BRING SPACE HARRIER BACK!!!!)

I won't call SFactor and Megamix the greatest Sonic 1 romhacks of all time. They just the good hacks like every else should have been. Megamix stands out just by lack of real organized competitors among community. That also lead to team's ultimate downfall, losing their development drive.

I haven't played Sonic Megamix, so this is just my opinion based on observation. Just glancing through a few gameplay vids though, Megamix isn't so much intuitive as it is just creating a lush hack from all the existing 2D sonic content. It's definitely a very cool thing as it is, but I wouldn't agree it is better. Perhaps more a good stepping stone that would leave to developing something even better. Fan hacks are just that, fan hacks by fans who want to relive the same past experience with some difference in gameplay. Original games like Sonic Mania are far different because they further develop on something that previously exists--in Spnic Mania's case, tying in elements from the entire series with one another--not just story, but also gameplay. Sonic Mania went a step further and rebuilt all of it entirely, not just change sprites and color palette old levels. Mania built new levels, new animations for the sprites, lush backgrounds that add far more to the environments, small little details that links every single element from all the 2D games such as the train in MSZ1 that is transporting tankers to OOZ (Oil Ocean Zone) or adding sound effects from Sonic Triple Trouble from Game Gear that take you back to the realization and remembrance of playing Sonic on Game Gear when you hear those sound effects or fight Nack the Weasel (Fang the Sniper).

Hey Angry Video Game Nerd fans out there, you guys should make a AVGN 2D animated fan film call The Quest For Sonic MegaMix where it acts like it takes place 2 years after the events of Angry Video Game Nerd The Movie about AVGN was just about done doing a Sonic The Hedgehog Classics retrospective (Sonic 1, Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 And Knuckles) for both all of his AVGN viewers and all of the long-time Sonic The Hedgehog Classics fans out there and then he announces that he's gonna to do a special worldwide Sonic The Hedgehog 25th Anniversary live stream on his website, Cinemassacre. But what should he do on that live stream is the real question until Cooper and his girlfriend, Mandi, told AVGN that there's a Sonic The Hedgehog game he should play on the live stream: Sonic Megamix. Now AVGN, Cooper and Mandi must go on an quest to find Sonic MegaMix at all cost and play it for the live stream with some unexpected fun surprises along the way.
