This band has knocked Zappa off the top of my play list after 55 years of him being on top.
@loriec24526 ай бұрын
I understand how that could happen. I have music that has blown into my life and changed me for a few years now. My husband is a deep Zappa fan. I think we are contemporaries in time with you.

Going from Zappa to Band-Maid is pretty far out.

That's saying a lot too.

Wow. Me too. But only 53 years. Saw Zappa four times but Band Maid only once, so far....

In the last 20 years or so my heart had moved away from Rick n roll. Mostly because there was so little rock n roll produced. But BandMaid grabbed me and hasn't let go. To see and hear real rock n roll again makes me happy beyond words.

If you wanna see Dice in a different light, see Dice/Hate from Lollapalooza this past August

I agree. 👍

Yep. No flashing lights, for sure, just bright sunlight. In fact, you barely get to see Kanami at all! But as good as these pandemic-era live streams are (and they kept the band in business and gave us a little relief), Band-Maid really shines in front of a crowd. Even a Friday afternoon crowd that's too small by at least half, because the ones that _were_ caught a rare performance!

Dice/Hate? from Lollaplooza is definitely my most watched live songs for the past few months.

They made a few double bill MV's during the plague years as they were unable to tour and earn so did streamed gigs and also took advantage of the Japanese government's extra payments to artists if they released 2 songs at once rather than 1. Those 5 streamed gigs they did were as close as we could all get to real live performances and they were life- and soul-saving and bringers of real joy. Which is just one of the reasons why I love them so much. THE best band in existence.

"Candy or whip?" doesn't refer to what you probably think it does. It's about how to motivate someone. It's often used in reference to parenting. It's akin to "carrot or stick?" In the context of the song, it's basically about encouraging people to step out into the world and take chances to live a fulfilling life. Hence, "seize the moment." "Welcome to my home" doesn't mean what you probably think it does, either. 😄 Great band.

I agree with you liking “DICE” more. That song leans into the Maid’s more hard rock vibe. I grew up on Rush and Van Halen, so that’s what my ears are drawn to. Not sure where you’re headed, but here are some bangers from my personal playlist: “Moratorium” “Don’t you tell ME” “From Now On” “Onset” The last two are instrumentals. But all four are best at max volume!

DICE is more accessible in the context of expectations for Hard Rock music, but DIFFERENT, which the band produced two years later, marked the beginning of their move to a more Progressive sound (creating something “different” indeed), and upon repeated listening reveals itself to be the superior composition.

Be sure to check out the official music videos too, they're great! This was a PPV LIVE stream with no audience during covid lockdown (plandemic). The world stopped but Band-Maid didn't. Kanami always leaves you wanting more, it's how she works. There is a reason for the manic lighting. Watch the official music video and you'll see. It fits in with the Anime the song was written for "Log Horizon 3"

You aren't the first to point out the distraction of strobe lights and the flash-cut style of a lot of Band-Maid's live and studio music videos. I think the standard for Japanese music video editors is 90 scene cuts per minute...probably. :)
@GaryHolloway-8106 ай бұрын
What strobe lights? I was too busy laying on the floor shaking to notice.😏
@johnmatthew1026 ай бұрын
@@GaryHolloway-810 Lol! I think some of their videos should come with a trigger warning. "Onset live" is another example of a seizure-inducing video. Watch it in full screen if you dare and have a defib handy!

@@johnmatthew102 Haha. Idk if it's anything to do with my colour blindness but i seem impervious to the effects of any flashing lights. That's why i'm the only one not to run away at night when i see a load of police cars. 🤔Hmm tho now i think of it, those people who do run might just be criminals :)

Kanami is the most unselfish lead guitarist you'll likely ever hear. She would rather see her bandmates get equal spotlight and that makes her very happy. Get used to wanting more, because it is the norm for them.

Welcome to the world of Band Maid 🎉 The unique thing about this band is their courage to make all sorts of music. They blend and bend genres. If you have a specific style or feel that you’re into? Band Maid probably has a couple songs you will love
@surfingasongwave6 ай бұрын
You run into this from time to time. Others are falling over themselves for what I'd consider average musicianship. I'll tell you what I like about them, and if those are not your criteria, then fine. We're probably not going to agree on quite a lot. Technically, they are pretty good but that's not their defining characteristic. I think technique is a tool for expressing emotion through sound - if you can't express anger or hope or disappointment or love through your technique, then it's wasted. Band-Maid are very expressive. The whole band, not just one or two of them. The drummer is Akane Hirose and she's sort of known for doing wizardry, but she might be best on some of their gentler songs where she adds subtle punctuation to the melodies. The same goes for MISA on bass; there are probably bassists that can play "more notes" but her sense of style and her ability to supply countermelody are pretty much unsurpassed. She provides a solid foundation like a good bass should but between her and Akane, the rhythm section is almost orchestral with what they add to a song. Speaking of orchestra, Kanami Tōno writes most of their music and (as chaotic as "Different" is in this video) she writes complicated music that is simple at the same time. I understand a lot of "metal heads" will be disappointed _any_ time a song slows down or expresses tender feelings - they'll consider it "pop" or "not metal" but it's what this band does best. They call themselves "hard rock" and harken back to when Led Zeppelin could put "Friends" right behind "Immigrant Song" and it was considered brilliant for it's contrast... I'm also think that contrast is the basic tool for expressing emotion. If everything is loud, then nothing is loud. If everything is fast, then nothing is fast. If you can play a song that tenderly says "I'm missing you" and follow it up with an angry "I HATE YOU!" it will have much more impact. This band can be loud and in your face, but it's really effective when they follow it with "you can't relive this moment." So if you're on the same page as me then listen to, say, five of their songs. You might change your mind. If not, oh well! Be well.

I like to be on the rail at shows and back lit stages are a pain with spot lights shining right you. If you are further back or in a balcony it's not too bad, but yes.

I am so happy that Band Maid does solos for every member. But what I really appreciate is that these solos are very short and fit into the song 🤓. I hate those 80s rock bands playing a solos for a minute or even longer. That is so boring and interrupts the whole song (greetings to GnR). 😅 Just my opinion 😎

The studio version of Different is better. The mix, as you might expect, makes everything clearer, especially the lead guitar. You should listen to it for you own enjoyment. They're a great live band but they're a great studio band as well.
