The biggest risk are laser diodes without a proper wavelengh filter system. Thats why safety glasses just work for good filtered laser diodes in the right wavelengh. Every other combination may still make huge damage on your eyes. As you said, for excample a green laser pointer. If you freeze it, it might not work anymore. But when you push the button and look into it you might get blind. It is just emmitting ir in this cold state, but is still powerfull enough to blind you. So take dare while using commercial unprofessional lasers for experiments.

@grn1
@grn1 3 жыл бұрын
From my understanding Laser Diodes are powered by LEDs and LEDs will pull as much power as they can from their power source until they burn out. For most LED circuits you use a resistor which limits the amount of power (current) that the LED can draw so it doesn't just burn itself out. In the case of both the original laser and the final one he used the resistance of the components themselves rather than a dedicated resistor to limit the current. Of course since the components aren't designed to act as resistors the exact resistance value will likely vary quite a bit more than a dedicated resistor which makes it somewhat risky (in terms of whether or not the laser will burn itself out). This also means that the exact output power of each laser pointer will change from one device to another as well as every time you change the batteries though at such low levels (for regular laser pointers) the variance shouldn't be noticeable.

Ten years in the future: you are a student in college, you attend a lecture on thermodynamics by a guest lecturer. This unassuming man walkes up and turns on a powerpoint. You settle in and take out your laptop. He clears his throat, introduces himself, and begins speaking. The first slide contains an equation that he begins explaining. He reaches into his suit pocket and pulls out a laser pointer. He clicks the button and the entire wall of the lecture hall is vaporized immediately. "My bad," he says. "Wrong one." He puts the laser back in his pocket and continues with the lesson.

Lasers are fairly simple in terms of their construction, more or less just a concentrated light source passed through a medium susceptible to lasing (there are lists of them) and then reflected between two mirrors, one partially reflective so that it can pass a portion of the light. as the light bounces through the medium you get a quantum mechanical effect that causes a cascade of energy shifts to a common lower energy wavelength of light that's based on what material you use. then as some of that light is reflected back and forth in the cavity it builds up due to that cascading effect and recycling some portion of the light back and forth, which means that it feeds back to allow more light to exit as well since the amount that comes out is some percentage of the light hitting the partial reflector, not an absolute.
@Fingerblasterstudios
@Fingerblasterstudios 6 ай бұрын
That being said the total output is based on the amount of wattage you can put into the light source and the amount of light that gets actually captured in the cavity for lasing. that's not always very efficient for example in a helical flash tube laser because those will dump a large amount of their light off to the sides instead of into the medium itself. this is actually quite inefficient and makes for a poor power in to out ratio. a far better method is actually to have a straight flash tube inside of an elliptical reflector at one of the focal lines, with the lasing medium lying along the other one. This, in theory, with a perfect mirror, you are dumping **all** of the input energy into the lasing medium because all of the light exiting one focal line **will** pass through the other one geometrically. Now will you get losses due to the reflector being partially absorptive? sure, but if you use a white light source you **won't** get interference losses **inside** of the chamber that actually concentrates the light onto the medium. this means that you're more or less getting a concentrated beam of light passing through the medium which itself could be shaped so that the light passes through it more efficiently based oh the geometry rather than a standard cylindrical block. Then you cap the ends off with a full mirror on one side and a partial mirror with masking on the other side to prevent axial leakage of the flash source. This would make a very highly energy dense laser and could be done using simply a small ruby rod the same size as a flash tube from a cheap disposable camera, then getting a custom set of reflectors made or do it yourself. (obviously don't try this at home etc. this is dangerous because you could get a way higher output laser than what you're calculating if you don't know what you're doing and are instead accounting for the power outputs that come from a helical flash laser. I am not responsible for anyone using this information, I'm just putting it out there because I think it's interesting at an academic level.)

what happens when you center a rodin coil at the center of the focal point. magnetic waves affect lasers even in a vacuum.. what would be interesting is if the magnetic field is strong enough could you get the laser to become part of the field maybe light can get pulled into magnetism making a laser magnetic field. the frequency of the coil needs to be calculated with the frequency of the laser.
@AquillaWbes

you could probably ramp up the coil in ratios concordant with the evolving affected laser frequency like playing the lasers song into crescendo before amalgamating to be part of the magnetic field. So Awesome.
