The spin on automatic transmission filter should be on EVERY automatic transmission made today. Such a great engineering idea in my opinion. All Subaru had to do was make the auto trans filter a different size so it could not be confused with the engine oil filter. Transmissions would last much longer with the ease of service with a spin on filter and a good old fashioned dipstick!

You need to say "Subaru America" says, as we both know "Subaru Japan" has different maitanance schedule. :) I've asked a second hand Subaru dealer in Tokyo about how often the CVT oil. The answer was: 40k km (25k miles). The guy was very surprised that I cared to ask.

Recently brought in my 2001 H6 with 200K miles for ATF drain & fill. Using an independent shop with two very experienced Subaru mechanics. I also asked them to change my screw on ATF filter. They strongly recommended against that, saying they’ve seen it cause problems when they are replaced. They must truly believe this, as they basically refused to take my money to perform that part of the service. Seems counterintuitive, but there you go. There’s another well-known independent Subaru shop in my hometown, and they had took the same approach when they changed my fluid last time. They did not change the ATF filter. They cited the fact that the Subaru maintenance schedule does not show changing the ATF filter as a recommended service. That is true, but it does make me wonder why they would use a screw on filter for a part that they never want you to change.

I hate that manufacturing companies claim that the transmission fluid/filter is lifetime these days, or that you either need a dealer tool to service it or have to bring it to the dealer for the service that they will likely say you don't need.

I’m going to be honest with you MrSubaru. I used to be a lube tech at a Walmart Auto Center and 80% of the time the idiotic coworkers drained the transmission fluid and removed the atf filter on older Subarus. It was very annoying because I had to fix their stupidity in order to get this car finished so I literally had to finish the job while they learned from their mistakes but they still never learn. But I’m so happy that I left before COVID-19 took over, currently I am an express Lube Tech at a Subaru Dealership and I have to say, it’s way better compared to when I worked at Walmart Auto Center. But thank you for the entertaining video!

Great info I have a 2007 4 speed EAT good stuff to know thinking about draining down 4 quarts and adding a new filter the dealership /stealership etc offer expensive repairs with no explanation of why they are needed. You make sense to me. Looking at the cost of new Subarus only briefly then the sticker shock puts me in the Toyota camp. Subaru Forester has been great changed rear wheel bearings and timing belt plus passenger side boot think I am good. Thanks for the insights.

I have a hard time understanding how someone could get the two filters mixed up. I'd admit, I almost did when I got under my first subaru but quickly thought the AT filter didn't seem to be anywhere near where it should be if it were a oil filter. So I took a closer look and finally found it up behind the radiator.

I think I posted on another channel about the ATF filter essentially being free flow. On the remote filter on the 5eat it wouldn't benefit from an anti drain back valve either. I want to cut into mine, when I change it though. There is a spring with a flat piece of metal on the inside of the filter media. I made the mistake of pushing on the round metal plate on the inside of the filter with fine screen mesh that was attached to the end. I accidentally pushed it down a bit and a little crooked. I never looked at the part number to see if it was superceded along it's design. For $25, I would hope maybe the filter media might be a different micron filament. That's just my 2 cents, and something to make you go hmmmm.

Good info especially for those side or even more the top mounting oil filter people. I've had the time to watch a lot of oil filter cut open videos and found there's a big difference in base Fram (extra) vs higher step up Frams. For many years I was base Fram user now I'm going Denso form rockauto. I have a motorcraft filter on my car right now because of combined shipping, my filter mounts on the bottom so no real concern.

Thanks for your video. Subaru dealer quoted just over $70 Aust last change (part alone), so I put a Ryco trans oil filter (just over $30 Aust) on instead. Did the whole job myself (including internal filter and naturally the oil). It’s very tempting, without realising the difference to use engine oil filter where trans oil is. In past non-Subaru spare parts seller said I could use engine oil filter in both situations. I would prefer Subaru to have left the spin on filters in use and discarded the internal filter, with more regular oil changes. I despise these asses who design things to breakdown earlier, considering most Subaru owners are not wealthy enough to turn their cars over so quickly.

Material wise & construction design of both Subaru AT and Engine filters are not so very different, which means the material/manufacturing costs of both filters are probably similar or the same. We do not know if the paper or cardboard (?) filter elements are one and the same though. I would give an added premium to the AT filter for the simple reason of higher pressures w/in the ATransmission. Having said that, $6.+ for the engine oil filter and $30.+ for this AT filter is simply ridiculous and smacks of 'capitalistic GREED.' :-(

So in regards to using an oil filter in place of a transmission filter, it looks like a case of "you can, but you shouldn't". Are there any known adverse effects of using an oil filter instead, other than cheap filters wearing away? And if you make something idiot-proof (I.E. "A/T" written right on the stupid thing) the world just invents a smarter idiot. Though despite the risks I'd love it if more cars had that filter type.
